We’ve received numerous calls regarding scours in young calves recently. Acute onset of diarrhoea can cause a rapid decline in their health and unfortunately, even with treatment, can be fatal for these young animals.

As the weather warms up, various bacterial, viral, and protozoal agents are recognized as causative agents of calf scours - commonly seeing rotavirus and/or cryptosporidia in our area.

Sick calves should be given an oral electrolyte solution or placed on intravenous fluids to rehydrate & support them. Antibiotics are indicated only where secondary bacterial issues develop.
Please ensure good hygiene practices are implemented when calving and avoid calving in paddocks with previous outbreaks of diarrhoea.

Cryptosporidia can cause gastrointestinal upset in humans, please be mindful when treating sick animals to wear gloves and wash your hands and clothing after handling.

🚙 Katy & Jess recently headed to Sydney to attend the annual VetExpo, held at the ICC Darling Harbour.

The event provides a platform for everyone involved in the veterinary industry to gather and share knowledge. Over two days, nurses, vets, researchers, receptionists & exhibitors gave talks & demonstrations, participated in discussions and got the audience thinking!

It is important as a small, independent business to ensure we make the most of such opportunities. Everyone in the veterinary industry has been facing the same challenges over the last 2+ years. Learning what strategies are being implemented to ensure the longevity of our businesses and more importantly, our staff could not be more important.

We’ve left the experience with lots to think about, but are feeling inspired and enthused to empower our team to ultimately be able to provide the best for our clients and patients 🐾

🐍 Snake bite season is in full swing, with cats outweighing dogs as patients recently at CVS!
Those slithering nope ropes are just too enticing for our feline friends!! 😼
We’ve also had numerous sightings of some big browns in and around town, so please be vigilant with your family & pets!

If you witness or suspect your pet has been bitten by a snake, please contact your vet as soon as possible. The team can prepare necessary medications & assist you on arrival.

Exertional Rhabdomyolysis is a muscular disorder affecting horses that is frequently triggered by exertion, stress, hormonal factors or nutritional imbalances. In horses, the condition is characterized by muscle pain, stiffness, and reluctance to move. Vet Bri getting the call to check out Rein last week, after his owner noticed a reluctance to move & excessive sweating after an afternoon of racing around the paddock!

Following examination this gorgeous equine was given pain relief, strict box rest and his owner was to monitor the fluid intake and urine output. The days following saw monitoring & medicating continue and finally bloods to check muscle enzymes and kidney function.
A week on and all is well, with the advice to return to light work gradually! 🐎

Pocket pet Friday! 🐾 Curious little chaps, Simon & Richard, kept us entertained today while in for castration! Ferrets are a cheeky and fun-loving member of the Mustelid or weasel family. They live for 5-10 years and can weigh up to 2kgs!! 👀 Look away if you’re squeamish! This is one of the many reasons we recommend desexing female dogs! ✂️ Pyometra is a serious and life-threatening infection in the uterus. Sweet little Staffordshire terrier, Effie, presented to the clinic with vaginal discharge and was not interested in her food (a tell tale sign something was wrong for her owner). Following examination, the decision was made to go to surgery to remove her uterus and rid her body of the purulent fluid! 🥵 Summer is finally showing itself this week, with temperatures every day hitting the mid/high 30’s Please ensure your pets have adequate water sources (more than one bowl) while you’re at work during the day. They must also have well ventilated shelter to escape the sun ☀️ Keep your working dogs in tip top shape, by not working them during the hottest part of the day. Adding electrolyte supplements like Lectade to their drinking water will help replenish important minerals lost through dehydration. Small animals and pocket pets? Move them inside if possible! Just like humans - the little kids and the elderly really feel the heat! There’s some great ‘cooling’ mats you can buy these days or you could freeze chunks of ice to add to water bowls, maybe buy a kids shell pool, just add water for the dogs to cool down in out the back…. What are some helpful tips you’ve come across?
