With just over a week until Christmas, it will soon be time for our team in the SCAR Vet Clinic to take a well-deserved break after another busy year! ✨🎄

From December 24th our vet clinic will be closed as we recharge and gear up for an exciting 2025! We will return to normal days on January 6th.

All pet food and medication orders will need to be in by Thursday 19th Dec at the latest to ensure you can receive your items before we close for the year. 🧡

Last week, our amazing Nurse PJ was on his way to work when he noticed something wasn’t right on the Hume Highway. Stopping immediately, he found a juvenile kangaroo lying on the grassy traffic island between two busy roads, unable to stand. It was clear something was very wrong.

Recognising the urgency, PJ called for backup, and our CEO Marisa, along with Vet Amanda, rushed to assess the young roo. After an initial examination showed no obvious external injuries, the decision was made to sedate him and transport him to the SCAR Community Animal Hospital for further care.

Full body X-rays were taken, and after consulting with a specialist kangaroo vet via Wildlife Victoria, it became apparent that this poor boy had likely been struck by a vehicle, resulting in severe internal injuries. Despite the best efforts of our team, the damage was too extensive, and he sadly had to be humanely euthanised.

This story is a reminder: If you ever hit a kangaroo, even if it hops away and appears uninjured, ALWAYS call Wildlife Victoria to report it. In nearly all cases, these animals have sustained injuries that aren’t immediately visible and will need medical attention. The sooner wildlife carers are contacted, the better the chances of survival and recovery.

Today, our wonderful receptionist Clara had a special co-worker: Dr. Rose's charming pup, Kado.

While Clara enjoyed some quality cuddle time, she also found out that Kado is a true expert in “scent dispersal” Let’s just say he’s got quite the aroma! 💨💨

Just a reminder that the SCAR shelter, as well as the SCAR Community Animal Hospital, will be closed from Good Friday tomorrow (Fri 29th March) and will reopen as normal on Tuesday 2nd April. As usual, we’ll have some lovely staff and volunteers 'hopping' around in order to dote on all the kitties holidaying in our Boarding Cattery, and ensuring our resident shelter animals are all well looked after over the break!

Yesterday our team sadly said farewell to Dr Hannah who worked her last shift at SCAR before moving back overseas 🥹🛫

The Labour Day long weekend is here in Victoria, and Miss Pickles plans on spending the whole time curled up in her foster home with her new best friend! 🧡

The SCAR shelter, as well as the SCAR Community Animal Hospital, will be closed on Monday 11th March. However, there we'll have some staff members and volunteers around to ensure our cats and dogs in the shelter and our Boarding Cattery are well looked after during the break. 🧡

Welcome to the SCAR Community Animal Hospital

SCAR have now opened a low cost animal hospital to provide the community with accessible veterinary options for the care of their pets. We want to make high-quality desexing and veterinary care accessible to all pet owners.

Our high-quality hospital accommodates medical care ranging from routine vaccinations and health checks, to diagnostics and soft tissue surgeries and has a huge emphasis on the desexing of animals and pet ownership education. We have become Hume’s very first non-profit animal hospital, offering pet owners more options when it comes to caring for their pet’s needs.

By bringing your pets to see our veterinary team, you will not only receive exceptional care but are also helping us to offset the cost of vet care to pet owners experiencing hardship, as well as assisting us to continue the rehabilitation of homeless animals in our shelter facility.

Compassionate client care is one of the most important features of our practice, and our entire team is dedicated to providing excellent customer service as well as the best treatment for your pets. We look forward to working with you and getting to know your beloved furry friend.
