Our facility in Craigieburn is home to our lifesaving animal shelter, where, to-date, we have rescued, rehabilitated, and ethically rehomed over 12,000 animals and assisted countless pet owners to keep their beloved pets during times of hardship via our Community Outreach Programs. We are dedicated to providing our community with accessible resources and support, high standards of care, and compassion in order to keep pets and their people together where they belong. Over the past decade, we have embarked on a journey to evaluate the needs of animals (and their owners) in our community, to identify barriers and find innovative ways to deal with the grass root problems that see companion animals being abandoned. We aim to strengthen the human-animal bond and confront animal abandonment at its root causes. Through innovative programs, accessible services, community education and public advocacy, we have become a community resource hub for pet owners and an unwavering champion for animals who need us most. Our focus is to keep community pets with the families that love them by offering preventative pet retention programs, which work to avoid pets from needing assistance in the first place.

Last month, we received an incredible surprise from Airport West Early Learning Cooperative, who dropped in at the shelter with a bighearted donation on behalf of their littlest legends! ✨

Organising a donation drive at their childcare centre, these junior animal ambassadors collected a massive carload of pet food and toys to donate to SCAR and make life a little brighter for animals in need! 🧡 And the gorgeous artwork from Lachlan and Patrick has lit up SCAR’s reception!

It’s been so busy here at the shelter with animals arriving in our care daily in need of loving homes and endless visits from struggling community members who rely on our Free Pet Food Pantry to care for their pets. These donations have already made a huge difference, allowing us to keep hungry bellies full and provide lots of enrichment to the cats and dogs in our care!

Last week, our friends over at Pets Of The Homeless Australia dropped down to visit us twice, filling their van full of pet food. 🏠 Homelessness Week 2024 (5-11 August) 🐾

On any given night, over 122,494 people in Australia experience some form of homelessness*, many with a pet by their side.

The factors that lead to homelessness are varied and complex, but as the cost-of-living crisis worsens, more people are finding themselves in crisis, often for the first time. And owning a pet can make these situations even harder.

Since last year, we've seen a 30% increase in calls from pet owners needing assistance. Many are willing to sacrifice their safety, shelter, employment, and healthcare in order to keep their pets by their side.

In a field that traditionally prioritises animals over people, SCAR's mission has evolved to recognise that the well-being of people and their pets is connected—helping one means helping the other.

Through our Outreach Programs, we provide free pet food, veterinary support, and low-cost desexing to help those struggling to care for their pets. We also offer temporary boarding for pets whose owners are escaping domestic and family violence or facing homelessness until they can be reunited.

But we don't act alone. We collaborate with over 40 animal welfare organisations and human services initiatives to support those at risk. Together, we can address gaps in support and prevent the unnecessary separation of families and their pets.

To date, we have provided emergency boarding and medical support to over 9,230 pet owners in need and distributed over 1 million bags of free pet food to keep hungry bellies full and keep pets together with the families who love them.

No one should have to choose between their next meal, their safety, or their four-legged family to keep a roof over their head. That is why we do what we do.

Hi, I'm Martha! I'm a playful, affectionate and GORGEOUS kitty with no teeth but plenty of spirit, and I'm looking for a loving family to call my own! Can I come home with you? 🧡

After introducing you to some of our newest faces yesterday, we thought we’d start off August by celebrating the animals in our care who found their loving homes throughout July! 🥰 🎉

And it was another big one for two of our long-term residents! Gorgeous Faith spent over 230 days looking for her family here with us… only for her foster carer to realise that he was that family all along! 🧡 How beautiful is that? And then, after a whopping 313 days in our care, our senior kitty, Chloe (now Khloe), FINALLY found her person! “We love our little Khloe,” says Kim. “She’s a blessing to our fur family!”

We also waved goodbye to our doggo friends, Celine, Evie, Maverick and Raya, who are all settling in beautifully with their new families! And our feline friends Greg, Rhaena, Spaghetti, and Zip have all headed off to start the next chapter, too! 😻

As always, big thanks to our staff, volunteers and foster carers for guiding these cuties on their journey and to the wonderful families who adopted them into their hearts and homes! Over the last two weeks, we’ve welcomed 14 dogs and 16 cats into our care here at SCAR. ✨ Alfie, Bella, Billy, Link, Mushroom, River, Sarge and Tibby are just a few of the bunch who are busy settling into their new life here with us. Aren’t they beautiful? 😻

All these cuties are currently either having their medical and behavioural needs looked into by our team here in the shelter, or have headed off to one of our amazing foster homes to start the next chapter of their journey, relaxing, rehabilitating, and getting ready to find their loving homes!

No matter where they’ve come from or what they’ve endured, now that they’re here they will find patience, love, and understanding in our care! 🧡

They are our best friends, our confidants, our soul mates. They were tiny, fragile and painfully underweight. These were our first thoughts upon welcoming this family of nine Staghound X Bull Arab puppies into our care last month. They should have been gloriously chubby and full of life at five weeks old, yet their tiny ribs and bony hips were heartbreakingly visible with every breath. Not long after they were born, their mother had to undergo emergency surgery for severe mastitis—a painful infection of her mammary glands. The owner had poured everything he had into easing her suffering, but sadly, the procedure left her unable to nurse her pups. Without the means to continue providing for the accidental litter, he made the heartbreaking choice to separate the pups from their mother, entrusting the tiny family into our expert care here at SCAR. Our team of vets confirmed that the pups were malnourished, and two of them had issues with their bones due to the lack of nutrition. With an ongoing treatment plan to aid their recovery, the next step was to get those hungry little bellies fed! As you can see, they LOVED every second of it! They were huddled happily together in no time—safe, content and fast asleep in their toasty little puppy pile! Over the last few weeks, these little cherubs have been in the care of SCAR’s incredibly attentive foster carers, where they’ve regained their strength and transformed into extraordinary little pups ready to find loving homes! Stuart Not So Little is an XL boy with an XL heart of gold. 🥰  He’s looking for a family he can snuggle up with and have fun with, sharing a good walk, plenty of snacks, and a soft bed he will definitely hog! 🧡 He’s the very best boy… but he’s been waiting for over 100 days without a single application to bring him home.  When Stuart came into our care, he was a shadow of the dog you see here. Check out our sweet noodle, Gus, getting dressed to impress for his trial adoption! ✨ Last week, Eleanor came in to meet Gus along with her female greyhound! Gus and his new sister got along so well here at the shelter and Eleanor was very smitten with Gus too! So, today he headed home with her on a trial basis. This way, Gus can slowly settle in with his new family, get to know his new canine sister and make sure that they’re both happy to live in each other’s space! After 207 days, we think its definitely time to talk about BRUNO!! 🧡 This big hunk of love arrived with seven siblings back in September last year, and after watching all of them find their loving homes, Bruno is the only one still waiting! Special Delivery! 📦🎅 Earlier in the year, one of SCAR’s Animal Attendant’s Linda, adopted Bailey the Mastiff X pup after she fell in love while fostering him! Dry Cat & Kitten Food Needed

We are critically low on Dry Adult Cat and Kitten Food in our Free Pet Food Pantry at the moment and so, we are calling on our generous supporters once more to help us, help those who need it most! 🧡 This week alone, our phones have been ringing non-stop with calls from struggling pet owners. All with the hope that we might be able to lend a hand to help them feed their feline family members. Our Story

Second Chance Animal Rescue was founded in 2008 after vet nurse and local shelter volunteer Marisa Debattista witnessed firsthand how many beautiful animals needed help, versus how little resources were available.

Knowing she could make a change, Marisa launched Second Chance Animal Rescue with a few vet nurse friends and a handful of animals. Since then, we've grown into a network of hundreds of foster carers and other volunteers, with just as many cats and dogs in care. We're proud to say that by the start or 2019 over 10,000 animals had been rescued from not-so-pleasant fates in pounds and shelters throughout Victoria, and are now happily settled in new homes around the state. (Of course, our adopters will tell you, the question remains about just who saved who!)

On April 19th, 2015, after many years of planning and endless fundraising efforts, our first animal shelter opened in Campbellfield, Victoria. This first facility allowed us to save more animals and give potential adopters the chance to meet animals in a happy, relaxed space. Following this, in August 2019 SCAR moved from Campbellfield to Craigieburn, Victoria to open a MUCH bigger new facility which included our open-to-the-public community animal hospital, animal shelter, an education hub and cat boarding facility.

Our Story

Second Chance Animal Rescue was founded in 2008 after vet nurse and local shelter volunteer Marisa Debattista witnessed firsthand how many beautiful animals needed help, versus how little resources were available.
