Port Douglas Vets are very excited to introduce our newest toy "Worley" - our beloved dental X-ray suite. Dental X-rays allow us to see below the gum line and diagnose problems that could easily be missed by the naked eye. Research has shown that dental radiographs can reveal clinically important findings in 30% of patients that looked normal. Bringing dental radiographs to your pets allows us to find these problems that could otherwise go unnoticed and untreated. Our clinic Mascot Hilde had her yearly dental scale and polish today with complete dental radiographs. Thankfully, there were no surprises lurking beneath the gum line and her Human Dr. Harry can now sleep easily knowing that nothing has been missed!

Gunky Ears!!!

Ear Infections (Facnyname: Otitis Externa) are a very common problem for pets of FNQ. Ear infections are multifactorial, with skin allergies, anatomical factors, and hot humid environments all playing their part. The underlying risk factors compound to a point where bacteria or yeast overgrow and cause the acute infection. This in turn exacerbates the hot moist environment within the ear and creates narrowing of the canal (stenosis) โ€“ creating the perfect environment for the bugs to proliferate and becoming a self-perpetuating cycle. Left untreated, acute ear infections can cause irreversible anatomical changes and become chronic, and or lead to infections in the middle or inner ear.
With the cause being multifactorial, successful treatment and reducing recurrence hinges on several factors:
1. Identifying and addressing the specific anatomical, environmental and medical predispositions that apply to your pet.
2. Identifying the pathogen involved and targeting it with the most appropriate ear ointment and duration of treatment โ€“ our vets will always take samples from infected ears to identify the bug or bugs involved under a microscope.
3. Confirming resolution of the infection โ€“ the importance of rechecks cannot be overstated. Some ear infections resolve within a week, others can take several. Often ear infections can become chronic if symptoms resolve but a subclinical infection remains. It is best to treat the infection until it has resolved both clinically and on cytology.
4. Implementing long term strategies to prevent recurrence once the acute infection has been resolved โ€“ this relates back to point 1 and may involve medications, environmental modifications, regular ear cleaning or treating underlying dermatitis depending on your petโ€™s risk factors.
5. Early recognition of the symptoms and timely treatment before the chronic anatomical changes occur.
If your pet has any of the symptoms of ear infections โ€“ such as head shaking, an odour, scratching, or having a discharge โ€“ please reach out to discuss all the options with one of our vets.

๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒž Beat the Heat: Summer Tips for Your Dog ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿพ

As we move into the wet season and the temperatures rise, it's the perfect time to remind our dog owners of some essential summer care tips! โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿถ

๐Ÿ”น ๐’๐ก๐š๐๐ž: Make sure your outdoor pups have access to plenty of shade throughout the day! Look for cool, breezy spots to help them stay comfortable.

๐Ÿ”น ๐…๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ก ๐–๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ซ: Hydration is key! Make sure your dog always has access to fresh, clean water. Don't forget to bring water with you during walks to keep them hydrated.

๐Ÿ”น ๐’๐ฎ๐ง๐ฌ๐œ๐ซ๐ž๐ž๐ง Thinner-coated and white dogs are especially vulnerable to the sun. Try to keep them out of direct sunlight or invest in a dog-friendly sunscreen to protect their skin.

At Port Douglas Vets, we understand that a trip to the vet can be stressful for both pets and their owners. We have come up with some tips to help make your furry friend's visit as comfortable as possible:

๐น๐‘Ž๐‘š๐‘–๐‘™๐‘–๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ ๐‘†๐‘๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก๐‘ : Bring along their favorite blanket or toy. Familiar smells can provide comfort and reduce anxiety. ๐ŸฅŽ

๐ถ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘š ๐ธ๐‘›๐‘ฃ๐‘–๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘š๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก: Keep your voice soothing and calm. Your pet can sense your emotions, so a relaxed demeanor helps! We also strive to make our reception area as calm as possible for your pet's arrival.๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™‚๏ธ

๐‘†โ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ก ๐‘Š๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘˜๐‘ : If your pet enjoys a stroll, take a short walk before the appointment. It can help release some energy and ease their nerves. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

๐‘‡๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘  ๐‘œ๐‘› ๐ป๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘‘: We always have tasty treats on hand in the clinic to offer to your pet, however, if you know your pet has a favourite, feel free to bring it along with you. A tasty reward during and after the visit will help to positively reinforce their vet experience. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

๐‘ƒ๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘๐‘’ ๐‘‰๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘ : Consider bringing your pet in for a "just because" visit to help them get used to the clinic environment without any stress. We strongly recommend this one, and encourage any of our clients to pop by with their furry friend, to have a sniff around reception and weigh on the scales! ๐Ÿพ

Remember, weโ€™re here to help and make your pet's experience as positive as possible! If you have any questions or concerns before your visit, donโ€™t hesitate to reach out. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ’–๐Ÿฑ
