PET OF THE MONTH- ELTON Meet Elton, a 7 year old Fox Terrier with a lot of fight in him. Following the worst snake bite season in CVH history, Elton was unfortunately one of the 51 pets we treated for snake envenomation this past season.Elton presented to CVH at 10:30pm on a Friday night after his owners noticed him have 1 vomit and became wobbly in his back legs. They went outside and found a large brown snake at the back door. Eltonβs owners raced to CVH where Dr Ciara was waiting for him. On arrival Elton was recumbent, hypersalivating, had a fast respiratory rate with increased effort and his pupils were dilated. He was deteriorating rapidly. It is not uncommon for brown snake venom to cause laryngeal paralysis and severely compromise an animalβs ability to breathe.Dr Ciara immediately placed an intravenous catheter to administer fluids and a vial of antivenom, and started him on oxygen therapy with a mask. 15 minutes after receiving the vial of antivenom, his respiratory rate and effort was getting worse and Elton received a second vial of antivenom, as it was determined that this would give him his greatest chance at survival.About an hour after admission Elton started to fight the oxygen mask and he was placed under general anaesthesia to better control his ability to oxygenate his blood. Immediately following placement of the breathing tube, his respiratory rate normalised and his work of breathing reduced. Elton was maintained under a light general anaesthesia from 11:45pm to 2:45am. Elton had recovered well by 3:30am and was able to oxygenate his blood adequately on room air without any increased respiratory effort. By 8am he was sitting up on his own in his cage and by 5pm he was able to take a few steps outside.Eltonβs bloods were monitored closely over the next 3 days in hospital as snake venom often causes a marked increase in an enzyme called CK, which without appropriate treatment can cause secondary damage to the kidneys. Once his CK level ha
