Some great information from an experienced veterinarian.

Just a quick bit of professional information provided by our stud master and long term veterinarian, Peter Allan
A guide to checking the mare’s afterbirth after foaling. Spread on ground and check. Top left is the non pregnant horn. Shiny and healthy and with no tears in it. Top right is the umbilical cord. Centre is the body of placenta only part inverted. Bottom right is the pregnant horn showing the outside which was attached to the uterine wall. Note it is intact right to the tip. Thus we can be sure no placenta remains in the mare. This was passed three hours after foaling and as the foal first suckled. So far meeting all KPIs.
