Hey Pet Parents, have you heard?
Updates in Pet Vaccination Guidelines!

In recent years, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) has updated its guidelines on pet vaccinations based on extensive research and clinical trials. These new recommendations aim to optimize your pet's health while minimizing the risks associated with over-vaccination.
For Puppies:
1. Start the vaccination adventure at 6 weeks old, with shots scheduled every 2-4 weeks until they’re over 16 weeks. It’s like building a fortress of immunity!
2. Don’t miss their booster at 6 months of age to ensure their defences stay strong.
3. Kennel Cough vaccine annually and update their core vaccines with the C3 shot every 3 years. This tailored approach ensures continued immunity against prevalent diseases while reducing unnecessary vaccinations.
For Kittens:
Similarly, kittens start their vaccination series at 6 weeks old with shots scheduled every 3-4 weeks until they’re over 16 weeks with an F3 or F4.
Conclusion
By following the latest WSAVA vaccination recommendations and partnering with your veterinarian, we can ensure your pet receives the optimal protection needed for a healthy and happy life. Stay informed and proactive in your pet's healthcare to provide them with the best possible care.

Increasing Heartworm Risk in the Southwest

Heartworm disease is caused by a parasitic worm known as Dirofilaria immitis, which is transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Once inside a host, typically a dog or cat, the larvae mature into adult worms, residing in the heart and lungs. If left untreated, heartworm disease can lead to severe health complications and, in some cases, death.

Previously in the Southwest we have not been particularly worried about Heartworm Disease. However, recently a dog from Perth who HAS NOT travelled outside of Perth tested heartworm positive. Around the time of the dogs heartworm diagnosis it had travelled around the Rockingham, Yokine and Subiaco areas. The risk of your pet contracting heartworm is still low. However, it is increasingly important to ensure your pets are up to date with their heartworm treatment and it is essential if your pet has travelled to Perth or further North. We need to be aware this disease could already be in the Southwest.

Come visit us or give us a call to discuss which treatment is best suited to you and your pet.
