The peaceful passing of George Graig last Sunday night (17 November 2024), was a very sad moment for crocodile enthusiasts worldwide. Two weeks before, George’s special crocodile “Cassius” had also died. Cassius was thought to be the largest crocodile in captivity, and measured 5.48 m. Add the missing tail end, a 5.80 m or 19’ specimen. Cassius was caught in the NT in 1984 by Grahame Webb, and was shifted to George Craig’s tourist facility on Green IsIand (off Cairns Qld) in 1987. Grahame and other Crocodylus Park staff visited George and Cassius in December 2022. The relationship between them was truly remarkable, they clearly knew each other and seemed to be long-term mates. But there was so much more to George. He had come to the NT in the 1950’s as a crocodile hunter, and went from there to PNG, where he was based in Daru and operated boats up the Fly River. He did more crocodile hunting and trading, and built up a unique collection of the skulls of large, often man-eating crocodiles. He also became both a collector and expert in PNG art. All was relocated to “Marineland Melanesia”, on Green Island, in the 1970’s. A true pioneer in the tourist industry. George was one of the early voices for conserving crocodiles, had amazingly accurate recollection of past events, and enjoyed talking crocodiles with anyone with a serious interest. In the last decade so many people have made pilgrimages to Green Island, to interact with George, who everyone admired and loved … and of course to see Cassius. We all extend our deepest condolences to George’s family, who are now operating “Marineland Melanesia” – his legacy.
