‼️ TEMPORARY CLINIC CLOSURE - MONDAYS ONLY! ‼️

Dear Clients,

We have made the difficult decision to temporarily close Darwin My Vet Service on Mondays only.

Our apologies for any inconvenience caused with this closure. The decision has not been made lightly and is due to the significant staff shortage we are currently experiencing with both Vet and Nurse availability.

Phone calls will be directed to our sister clinic, University Avenue Vets in Durack during this time. They will be able to assist you with any phone enquiries, bookings and medication requests.

We continue to remain open Tuesday to Saturday. The clinic remains closed on Sundays.

We hope to return to normal operating hours in the near future. We thank you for your understanding during this time.

Regards, DMVS Management

Territory Day is approaching once again! What may be a fun occasion for us can be frightening for our pets
We have a few tips to help make cracker night this year a little easier for your pooch ( cats too!)
- secure your gates and fences, repair any holes that they might escape from!
- Try to keep them indoors as much as possible, if you cannot be with them, then a radio or TV may help mask the sound a little.
- Give them plenty of reassuring hugs, pats, treats, food puzzle so they can feel distracted and safe.

Some pets need a little extra help to stay calm. Sometimes the fear can lead to destructive and dangerous behaviour. If you think your pet needs medication to relax through the crackers please call us on 08 8927 3657 - we can organise an appointment to ensure your pets are safe and happy on cracker night!

We had the beautiful Luci in for her spey procedure today. Here she is before her surgery keeping warm and getting cuddles from Nurse Mikki. Luci is a 6 month old Brittany Spaniel and has the sweetest personality. All our desexing procedures have a qualified and experienced nurse monitoring them before, during and post operatively to ensure a smooth anaesthetic and fast recovery so we can get them home to their families as soon as possible 🥰

Meet Mittens, she is one of our nurses cats. Mittens does not like getting her regular worming tablet (see her unimpressed expression!), so she was quite happy when her human came home with Nexgard Spectra instead, and her human is glad not to be scratched anymore!

Nexgard Spectra for cats is a spot-on application to prevent fleas, ticks, heartworm, and intestinal worms.

For an added bonus, we have a few more treat lick mats available for free with the purchase of Cat Nexgard Spectra. These lick mats are a great mental exercise for your feline friends, add some of their favourite food into the mat, stick it onto a wall, and let them have fun!

Kennel cough has been doing the rounds in the top end!
If you notice your dog is coughing, retching or gagging a lot please call us on 8927 3657 to organise an appointment.

Kennel cough is something we often vaccinate against, however a vaccinated dog may still become unwell with kennel cough as there are many different strains of the disease. Keeping your dog up to date with vaccinations will give them a better chance at quick recovery.
If your dog does contract Kennel Cough it is important to keep them isolated so we can reduce the spread, keep them home, away from dog parks, and avoid contact with other dogs.
If you have an appointment for a coughing dog please call when you arrive and avoid entering the clinic unless directed by our vets or nurses.

How can you tell a tapeworm from other worms?

Try and measure something with it!

All jokes aside - make sure you are up to date with your pets intestinal worming. The little parasites can cause a big problem if left untreated. It might be a good idea to mark due dates on your calendar so its not missed!

Lizard eating cats and dogs commonly get Spirometra tapeworm which needs an extra tablet, feel free to call or come in to talk to our friendly nurses and get your furry companions worm free!

The grass grows so fast at this time of year, with that comes a lot of problems with our pets and grass seeds!
These small seeds have sharp points and can easily get under your dogs skin, or in their ears, or between their toes. This can lead to infections and painful abscesses. OUCH!

How to avoid this?
- keep your grass and weeds short and well maintained.
- avoid letting your dog walking through long grass
- regular grooming - brushing for all breeds, and regular haircuts for longer coats and curly coats.
- check your dog after walks - little bumps may be felt in the hair and easily brushed out.

Don't forget to give them a treat for being such a good dog! 🥰🐾🩺

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our wonderful patients and their humans!

The warmest start to the year in almost 90 years! We are certainly feeling the heat.

Please remember to only walk dogs in cooler times of the day, keep it slow and stop regularly for breaks.
Lots of cool, fresh water, and shelter for them to rest during the day when kept outside.

If you suspect your dog is overheating, call us immediately on 8927 3657 and wet your dog with cool water (not ice water) while you make your way to the clinic.
Heat stroke can be fatal - the sooner we start treatment, the better chances of survival.
What to look for: excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, collapsing, seeming confused or restless.

Stay safe and stay cool!

This holiday, relax, celebrate and enjoy all the delicious food.

Remember though, some of our favourite Christmas treats can make our pets really sick.

Chocolate, sultanas and grapes, cooked bones and fatty foods are best left off the pet menu!
If you aren't 100% sure if its safe, the best option is to not feed it!

Any accidental treats should be seen by a vet as soon as possible.

Some hot dogs are good....others not so much!

As the temperatures rise it's important to remember that our pets cannot tell us when they are too hot!
Heatstroke can be fatal.

- Please remember to walk your dog at appropriate times - early morning or late afternoon.
- During walks - watch for signs of them struggling, panting very hard, struggling to keep up.
- check the road with your bare hand before your dog walks on it, if its too hot for your hand its too hot for their feet!
-If your pet is outside during the day make sure they have lots of shade and lots of water available.

If your pet starts vomiting, seems very lethargic, wobbly when walking, or just generally out of sorts after heat exposure, call and bring them to the vet immediately.
Older pets, sick pets and very young pets are at a higher risk of heat stroke!

🎼Thunder bolts and lightning, very very frightening!⚡️
.. true for many of our puppy pals!
As the weather gets rough this wet season you might find your dog gets very anxious, this is a pretty common problem. We want your dog and the whole family to have a nice calm time when the weather goes wild.

Storm phobia can be mild to severe:
- trembling, vocalising, hiding, toileting accidents, pacing, refusing food.
- more severe signs may include; destructive behaviour, aggression, jumping through windows & over fences/escaping!

If your dog seems to be suffering from anxiety during storms, it may be a good idea to make an appointment to see one of our vets to discuss strategies to make this season a bit calmer.

You might have heard that there is a nationwide shortage of Leptospirosis vaccination. We currently have no estimated date of arrival for this vaccination and understand that some pet parents may have some concerns.

What is Leptospirosis? - it is a bacterial disease spread by rats and other mammals, it's more common in hot, humid environments - meaning our wet season is the perfect conditions for it!

What can you do to prevent your dog getting sick without the vaccination to protect them?
The disease is spread by other mammals, either by eating them or drinking contaminated water.
- change your pets water everyday to keep it clean
- inspect your yard regularly for dead rats or any other wildlife.
- when walking your dog - avoid letting them drink from puddles of water or any still water.
- watch out for symptoms - if your pet is infected with Leptospirosis, getting treated as quickly as possible is their best chance. Symptoms may include: lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, dehydration, muscle pain or stiffness.
Note: very young dogs are more likely to be severely affected than adult dogs, please be extra vigilant with puppies!

As soon as we get the vaccination in stock we will be in contact with our clients to get all our canine friends up to date!

Mozzies!
Super annoying little bugs. Their sting packs a serious punch when it comes to our pooches.
Mosquitos are guilty for spreading heartworm- a potentially fatal parasite that invades the heart and blood vessels and can cause heart failure. Signs of the condition include lethargy, coughing, difficulty breathing, exercise intolerance, and weight loss.

As with most diseases...prevention is better than a cure!
There are a few great options for heartworm prevention;
- a monthly chew such as Nexgard Spectra - given every 28 days.
- an annual heartworm injection given by the vet - this can be done with your dogs annual vaccination.

What if I haven't been giving my dog a heartworm prevention?
- we can rule out the presence of heartworm with a simple blood test, it only takes about 15 minutes!

Please call our friendly reception on 8927 3657 to ask for help or book an appointment!

Dental month is in full swing here at DMVS!

Here is a great example of why we love doing a regular scale and polish!
If we can get those teeth nice and clean before there is a lot of plaque built up, we can drastically reduce the risk of gum disease which can reduce the need to remove teeth and overall improve comfort and health in the mouth!
Not to mention a lot of other benefits;
- improved overall health,
-improved behaviour ( sore teeth can make a dog or cat pretty grumpy!)
- and best of all for us pet owners - fresh smelling breath!

There's still time to get in on the fun for Dental Month. Give us a call on 8927 3657 to organise a free dental check for your pet!
