Dr Slade recently shared his expertise as a returning mentor and instructor at Equine Veterinary & Dental Services (EVDS) in Grafton, at the Fundamentals of Equine Dentistry Workshop for Veterinarians.

The 2023 course welcomed 28 very keen vets from Australia and New Zealand, who were mentored by a team of well-over ten tutors; all highly esteemed Equine Dental Vets from all over Aus!

The week-long workshop provides mentorship & further-education to the next generation of Equine Dental Vets!

Thanks to Dr Emily, Demi & Belinda for holding the fort whilst Slade was interstate educating!

HEALTH ALERT: Confirmed Case of Hendra Virus in QLD - Mackay Region.

Biosecurity Queensland have confirmed Queensland's first confirmed POSITIVE Hendra Virus case in Five years; the Un-vaccinated horse receiving care for illness, was euthanized after its condition deteriorated rapidly on Friday the 8th of July 2022.

Remember, Prevention is the Single-most effective tool in keeping horses and humans safe from Hendra Virus.

Tips:
- Good biosecurity hygiene on your property.
- Biosecurity action plan in the event of disease outbreak on your property.
- Keeping feed and water containers out of flight paths and away from trees.
- Where advisable for your horse; ensuring they're vaccinated against HeV, and kept up to date.

Stay Educated, Keep ‘Em Hydrated!

• Cold Weather Colics are on the rise, and whilst “cold weather” isn’t directly a cause of colic; your horses behaviour in response to colder weather IS!

• Horses require a large volume of fluids 24/7 to maintain equilibirum; especially to facilitate digestion and excretion. A dehydrated horse is at an increased risk of colic episode; and it’s even more prolific in horses with known GI-disease (gastric ulcers, hind-gut acidosis, etc).

• Reflect on YOUR own behavioural change during colder weather, stop and think “have I actually drank any water today?”… Just like US on a cold day, a horses energy expenditure in movement is greatly reduced, therefore minimal desire to drink (even less incentive when their water is freezing cold); however, their bodily functions are still VERY reliant on a good plane of hydration to maintain homeostasis.

So the take home message, educate yourself and your fellow horse owners on the importance of keeping your horse well hydrated during these cooler months, a simple adjustment in your horses daily husbandry could mean the difference between prosperity or mortality.

TIP: Baseline bloods are a cheap and invaluable source of information; and are an easy add-on to any property visit.

Riding into the few remaining sunsets of 2021, we reflect over a year which bought us all personal and professional challenges to overcome, many joyful occasions and successes, accompanied by occasions where our resilience as horse owners and veterinary teams were truly tested….
