Beautiful afternoon winter's sun shining on some pretty nice looking potato plants π
Makes me feel very happy and satisfied π
Simple joys in my life always make me smile π
What moments make you smile in joy and contentment in YOUR life? Stop and pause next time you unconsciously break out in a smile. Take note. Celebrate those moments π
I just learnt about another disease which our frogs have to battle with. Chytrid (pronounced βKY-tridβ) affects frog's skin depleting electrolytes needed for heart function, which can cause them to have a heart attack. Did you know frogs drink through their skin, so you can appreciate the serious nature of this disease!
So what can I do about this? Glad you asked π
Build them a FROG SAUNA!
A simple solution to help the cute little froggies battle survival of existence.
We've just made a few FROG HOTELS at the local kindy, a big and beautiful Frog Sauna looks like it will be next on the agendaπ₯°
Home grown salad for lunch...well mostly.
I'd love a milking cow for fresh milk and milk products like cheeses, but with that level of time commitment, it's never going to happen π
I can always dream about it though ππ₯°
My nature moment for today π
Walking to my car after my shift this afternoon I spied this little fruit bat gorging itself on nectar of these gorgeous grevillas. It went from one flower to the next drinking the nectar with its long little tongue...licking it lips until it became aware of me and pretended to camouflage with the tree...unsuccessfully π
After a hectic week I've finally managed a Sunday afternoon rest in the warm sun. A chance to slow down for a few hours and spend some quality time with my beautiful daughter π

I finally found some time to harvested tumeric.
When the leaves die back in the cooler months is the signal to get the gardening fork out and get some gentle exercise in.
Forking to loosen the soil and then gently lifting the roots/rhizomes minimise the tumeric 'fingers' from snapping off.
Hosing any soil that gets stuck in between the rhizomes is the easiest way to clean it up before bringing into the kitchen.
I use tumeric everyday to help manage inflammation. I'd rather eat my medicine than use other forms if possible.
"Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food.β Hippocrates
Finally got around to planting my seed potatoes. I've been patiently waiting until they've chitted...fancy talk for sprouting. This is when they begin to sprout shoots from the swollen spots known as 'eyes'.
If you buy 'seed' potatoes from your local nursery, seed or even produce store you can be confident they will be virus free. If you plant potatoes from your last shopping trip you increase the risk of introducing viruses into your soil which is extremely difficult to deal with. They may have also been treated with a growth inhibitor to prevent them from chitting!
Hopefully we'll be harvesting around 20kgs of potatoes in Oct/Nov π€
Have you ever considered growing potatoes?
They are such a fun food plant to harvest. You don't need a lot of space or even a garden bed for that matter. A large container, pot or upcycled vessel with drainage holes and at least six hours of sunlight is all you need. Why not give it a go!
Another garden bed created and resting before planting up in Springπ π
Only another two to go...maybe three π§π
This little guy/girl quickly jumped off the rocket (arugula) leaves I harvested and tried to hide - they didn't want to be added salad protein π
I'm grateful for the little holes, imperfections and insect encounters of my home grown food and am more than happy to shake off the spiders, preying mantis and other bugs when I harvest it because they remind me that it's spray free produce and the ecosystem of my garden is healthy.
My πTOP TIP π
Use a salad spinner after rinsing your harvested salad leaves, you'll be surprised the little critters you might have missed ππ·οΈπͺ²ππ
Not very exciting photos for some, but for those who understand...they are π
Found some πfabulous fungi πin the food forest π³
This made me so happy and excited to know that the ecosystem is happy and healthy π₯°
Such a gardening geek thing I know π
This beautiful cheery yellow cosmos is a reminder of our responsibility as gardeners and growers.
The cosmos is trying to run away π
It is quite a distance from the closest site of planting. The seed may have scored a ride on my boots or even on Milo our dog!
Having this grassy space on the lower slope of our established gardens helps us spot potential escapees, as it acts as a buffer zone. It enables me to recognise potential offenders and be more vigilant when dealing with the plants seeds.

Found this pineapple in the food forest. The weight of the pineapple causes it to fall to the ground where new 'pup' plant forms. If not picked, the pineapple fruit will decompose and a new plant will grow from the top.
This pineapple also has a pup growing from its base - two new plants from one fruit - doubling my future growing potential.
Pineapples are very easy to grow. If you have some space in your garden and patience you can enjoy this beautiful sweet fruit yourself. Simply remove several of the lower green spikey leaves from a pineapple top to allow more root development to form and either place in a jar of water till roots appear or place directly in the soil and keep moist. They take up to two years to fruit appears - makes you enjoy your own pineapples more π
I learnt some interesting information from yesterday's community swapping group, when guest speaker, Leah the florist, showed us some basic tips on arranging flowers.
Although I have got way too many gardens, I've still got one more garden bed to reinstate...my flower garden πΌπΊπΈ It will be my flower cutting and pollinating flower bed which will greet people when they visit.
With a few suggestions from Leah about what to plant...I'm inspired and rearing to get out there and immediately start. Alas...but first I have to finish a few other projects π
Hopefully I'll have my 'new' garden ready for spring this yearπ€
Yesterday Leesa's Little Farm held another Walk & Talk Tour, despite a sprinkling shower or two. We discussed how permaculture ethics, principles and design process was applied to the property layout and how it functions.
If you've heard of permaculture before but are still uncertain about what it actually is or means, the Walk & Talk tour is a good opportunity to dip your toe in, and be properly introduced. We spent time exploring it from a theoretical perspective as well as practical application.
For those wanting to deep dive further into permaculture design, so you can feel confident to start your own journey on implementing these principles yourself on your own site, the Essentials of Permaculture Design series will be available in October 2024. Further information will be released later on in the year.
I visited Bayview Kindy last week to discuss all things π±seeds and seedlings π±with the children.
This terms education session was exploring the connection between our food, seeds and soil.
I was impressed with their recollection of our first session and their knowledge of what seeds need to 'wake up'.
They used their fine motor skills to plant some tiny, different shaped flower seeds in pots to take home and care for.

Upgrading the Little Farm Stall to a slightly bigger 'Little Farm Stall' π
Available at Cafe Bancroft today.
White dragon fruit, limes & pumpkin.
Drop by for a coffee and a treat as well π
Dragon fruit season has come to a close at Leesa's Little Farm.π
Thank you for your support and positive feedback about the produce.π
This keeps me going forward π
I'm privileged to be able to contribute a little bit to our local food system. I believe it is a very important action which makes a community stronger, more resilient and healthier. If there were more 'little' farms or front yard, back yard growers then combined, we become BIG ππͺ
π§ The Little Farm Stall will be CLOSED π§
for the next few months while it is upgraded to be more functional and weather proof.
If the weather improves it might be sooner π€
What a great barterππ
Dragon fruit for a customised theatre cap.
Thanks Sherice π₯°
Maybe we will do it again next season π
Just a beautiful start to a day π
Visited Palms Lake Retirement Village Gardening Group this morning. It was a wonderful audience of keen gardeners who embraced the topics of Permaculture and, you guessed it, dragon fruit.
Thanks for your welcoming hospitality and engagement.
I really enjoyed my time with you this morning.
Thanks Mary for reaching out.
Getting there slowly - principle 9 - use small and slow solutions π
We're about a third of the way through changing the vegetable garden area.
Observing over the years different aspects of this space and creatively responding to change in our lives, both now and anticipating future changes, means we can redesign, or 'tweak' this area to work better for us, the food we grow in this space and even improve our contribution to our wildlife.
Permaculture is a design framework, which for us, takes the hard work out of navigating this process so it's a win for us, others and the earth.
If you're interested to know more, there is a walk and talk tour coming up at the end of next month 25th May.
Check out a previous post (27.4.24) for more details.
I think everyone who attended the Permaculture Walk & Talk session this morning learnt something and was thankful for fine weatherπ
We plowed through a lot of information which can be quite overwhelming, but hopefully with the assistance of technology π the complexity of the topic was made a little clearer.
Unpacking the essence of Permaculture in a short time period is a challenging task, however the main point of learning is that it is a design framework for building relationships so all elements benefit.
I, also learnt a lot about working with technology π§ Not my favourite subject, however I faced my weakness head on. This way I will be more equipped to engage in our tech dominated world.
Red dragon fruit also available today at Plot 4504 Market Garden π

This bamboo is definitely suffering without any recent rain. In a subtropical climate, not raining in over a month almost feels like a drought π Although our cooler season is typically drier than our hotter months, this isn't always the case, particularly in recent years. Several days of cold unseasonally windy weather, also causes water loss in plants, and has pushed this bamboo to shed a lot of leaves! As these are established bamboo clumps I'm not too worried about them dying yet, however I am keeping an eye them. If I need to water them for survival I will as they are a beautiful useful grass to have around (if you have the space). #bamboo #leesaslittlefarm #GubbiGubbiCountry #deceptionbay #moretonbayregion

I've had a busy week doing Day Camp as well as working, so haven't been in the garden at all. A quick garden inspection helps me plan my time and activities when I'm next able to spend time in there and prioritise my attention and action. The effect of a little rain reinvigorates plants, soil and animals as well as us! Have you noticed this for yourself? After the next rainfall, take some time to slowly wander out in your garden or a nearby park and be mindful of how you feel? You might be surprised at what you discover π

The Younity Traineeship garden is looking really pretty at the moment, as well as being very productiveππ₯¬πΈ Wandering through at the end of a beautiful Autumn day I'm amazed at how good soil and a little TLC can be so abundant. The Greenie Crew only has time to get in the garden once, maybe twice a fortnight, due to all their other commitments. It is growing healthy cucumbers, lettuce, eggplants, chillies, sweet potatoes and joyful zinnias. The Little Farm Stall is on its last leg! The paint layers are sagging and the top shelf has now collapsed π It has faithfully stood through searing heat and humidity, torrential rain, flooding as well as some beautiful Queensland weather over the past four years. To be honest, I didn't think it would last as long as it did! It was lovingly sanded, painted and varnished as well as a new back board tacked on. Obviously the extra tlc enabled it to last as long as it did. I'm now scrolling through my extensive pinterest folder to see what the next Little Stall will may look like βΊοΈ It might even be a little bigger π #farmstall #reuse #repurposed #gubbigubbicountry #leesaslittlefarm #regenerativefarming #permaculture #organic #organicgardening #periurbanfarming #deceptionbay #moretonbayregion
I try to spend some time each Easter season removing some beautiful Easter Cassia (Senna pendula var. glabrata) from our property, as it's classified as an environmental weed. I chose this section of a neighbouring fence line to prune, so as to prevent seed from forming on the Easter Cassia, but also to rescue a dwarf banana being smothered by the foliage. I was quite shocked however when I spied a very large carpet python at eye height. I reckon it would be about 2.5 metres long! The wet ground and slightly cooler weather seems to encourage snakes to find warmer drier locations to sleep, meaning you need to be snake aware from all aspects...not just the ground!! Lesson learnt! Shortly after we found another one sleeping in some vetiver grass π³ #carpetpythons #sleepysnakes #gardensafety #gubbigubbicountry #leesaslittlefarm #regenerativefarming #permaculture #organic #organicgardening #periurbanfarming #deceptionbay #moretonbayregion
I found a random cow paddy ππ©on my way to the chicken pen this morning π³ Maybe a neighbour's cow was sleep walking last night?? Definitely a mystery, as there doesn't seem to be foot prints in the soggy grass near by π€ Not the first time something like this has happened. π³π π±nature continually astounds me πΏπ₯° We can learn a lot if we slow down, observe and interact with nature, ponder and reflect π€ The question I asked myself from this surprising discovery and interaction.... What environment or space should I place myself in, or surround myself with, to allow my 'seed' (passion and gifting), to germinate and grow? My answer.... Continue to work on my passion of establishing permaculture education options for my local community, even if I'm unsure of the best place to start. Another reflection I gleaned from this 'The dragon fruit seed germination in plywood' nature lesson, is that you might find your 'seed germinating' in unexpected places, not the 'normal', traditional places you had imagined. #permacultureprinciples #observeandinteract #gubbigubbicountry #leesaslittlefarm #regenerativefarming #permaculture #organic #organicgardening #periurbanfarming #deceptionbay #moretonbayregion
I discovered my trowel handle hole had been repurposed into a mud house for a local insect...not sure which one...but going to guess a species of wasp. Shows they are happy to use any available hole they can. This is good motivation for a fun long weekend project - make a little (or big) bug hotel. It's so simple. All the material you need you'll already have at home. 1) A tin can 2) Sticks or any material which has a hole at one end (wander in your garden and you'll find something) 3) String, twine or wire to hang up or tie to a tree branch Clean and dry tin can. Fill the can with your holey material, until no material falls out when held upside down. Find a safe spot outside, preferably in the shade, and position it securely. Observe who moves into your newly created bug sanctuary over the next several weeks.
