Finally dehorned our first batch of calves! Using sedation, local anaesthetic and anti-inflammatories these babies got the works! We hope to offer the full service in the near future. Also managed to do a quick bit of plastic surgery on a calf with a hairy third eyelid while she was under.

Today I tried sedating heifers for Teat Sealing for the first time for some lovely clients - it went swimmingly!! Heifers were very chill, the job was done quickly and cleanly. No tail jacking required and I didn't get pooped on once! Winning!!

Epic "day off" today - possibly the hardest uterine prolapse I have ever replaced (with intestines trapped inside) then the largest RDA I have ever corrected, requiring extensive drainage of many litres of abomasal fluid as shown in image. Fingers crossed today's patients make it - dairy cows are incredibly tough, and thanks to all today's helpers!

An important initiative, particularly in the context of the current FMD threat. The feeding of swill (human food scraps) to pigs is still considered the greatest risk of FMD incursion to Australia.

Moving pigs between properties?

From 31 July 2022, movement of pigs between properties must be recorded on the PigPass database.

This includes movements of pet pigs and pigs that are being given away.

Improved tracing for disease and emergency purposes protects your pigs.

Women in Dairy across Gippsland, join us for an information roadshow on foot-and-mouth (FMD) and lumpy skin disease (L*D).

In response to the recent outbreaks of both diseases in Indonesia, come along to a session and hear from Agriculture Victoria District Vets, Dr Dianne Phillips and Dr Nikkie Chadee on:

1. potential impacts on ag/dairy industry
2. general information on FMD & L*D
3. what to look for
4. transmission and the likelihood of either disease entering Australia
5. biosecurity measures that are put in place if there was an outbreak of either disease
6. Q & A

As many of you may be calving, four sessions have been organised across Gippsland. These sessions will be short to minimise time off the farm and will also include lunch and time to catch up.

Each session will run from 11am - 1pm and run from late July to mid August in several locations.

Locations, dates, & registration links:

Leongatha - Thursday, 21st July (register: https://bit.ly/3RntDKs)
