9 interesting fun facts about your dogs.
1. Dogs Have a Strong Sense of Smell
Scientists report that a dog's sense of smell is 10,000 to 100,000 times more acute than a human's. This is why dogs are often used to sniff out people, drugs and even money!
2. Some dog can sniff out medical problems.
Can you imagine that dogs can also help people with illnesses? Dogs have a very keen sense of smell and can tell if a person is sick by sniffing their scent. When the owner is sick, the dog will inexplicably bark at you and even indicate certain positions.
3. Dogs are not colourblind.
They are color-different, meaning they are color weak. In a dog's world of color, there are only blue, red, and yellow. Therefore, they can only differentiate between these three color.
4. Dogs donโt sweat like we do.
Dogs do sweat-- the only place that dogs sweat like us is on their paws, so instead they pant to cool down. This is why itโs so important to keep your dog cool on those warmer days to make it easier on them.
5. A dog's tongue is very sensitive to heat.
Even if it's just slightly hot, they'll be cautious. So when feeding dogs, make sure the temperature isn't too high. If it exceeds our normal body temperature of 37ยฐC (98.6ยฐF), the dog will feel very uncomfortable and may even get upset.
6. A dog's personality tends to become more similar to its owner's over time.
Especially in terms of temperament. So, gentle owners tend to raise gentle dogs, while more temperamental owners might end up with more playful or mischievous dogs.
7. Your dog could be left or right pawed.
There have been a few studies around this and it turns out that just like us, dogs have a preferred hand (well, paw) to lead with. You can find out whether your dog is left or right-pawed by giving them their favourite toy or interactive game and seeing which paw they use to help them first.
8. Dogs have 18 muscles controlling their ears.
Dogs can move their ears to better locate the source of a sound, thanks to their ear structure. There are 18 muscles on a dog's ears, which allow them to flexibly control their ears to make different "movements". When a dog wants to listen carefully to your command, or when it's rolling around in the mud, possibly flicking dirt, it may move its ears. This is when these muscles come into play.
9. Dogs are about as intelligent as a two-year-old.
Research by canine expert Coren at the University of British Columbia in Canada suggests that the average intelligence of a dog is equivalent to that of a 2-year-old child. Additionally, the intelligence levels vary among different breeds of dogs. For instance, on average, a dog can remember about 165 words, including verbal cues and gestures, with 20% of dogs even capable of remembering up to 250 words. Moreover, a dog's basic arithmetic abilities are comparable to that of a 3 or 4-year-old child.
