Imagine my surprise this morning to find a snake in the shop. Although I think this one is pretty harmless.
With the warmer weather allegedly on its way the snakes will soon be waking up from their winter siesta. Although not a true hibernation it’s the closest our Aussie animals get.
So time to start being mindful where we put our feet when in bushy areas.

A new decorative fish tank from The Crazy Squirrel.
$49.50.
Would look great in an office desk as a fish you don’t have to feed or as a night light in a child’s room.

Recently we ordered some fish tanks. When they arrived they were too small to comfortably house a fish so they sat in store while we were trying to decide what to do with them.
Then The Crazy Squirrel put up a post saying she was after a challenge. Chris contacted her and said ‘ see want you can do with this’ and showed her the tank.
She accepted the challenge.
Today she bought this in. It is a custom made faux fish tank.
Not designed to hold water so low maintenance it would be a unique one of a kind addition for any fish enthusiasts. Great for a work desk or as a night light in a child’s bedroom as it has a colour change light built into the tank ( video to follow)
We have commissioned her to make another of a different design.
This one is available in store now for purchase.

Hello Facebook land.
Who doesn’t love a bargain and sometimes buying second hand is the a good way to save a bit of money but there are somethings to look out for when buying fish tanks and accessories second hand.

Silicone
Make sure the silicone is in good condition and not lifting any where. A good way to test this is to run your finger along the seam and if it is lifting any where make note of where. Lifting silicone can not only increase the chance of leaks but can hide harmful bacteria and fungus diseases. If the tank is too good to pass up but the silicone does lift in places you can take some steps to help prevent issues. Most hardware stores sell tubes of aquarium grade silicone that you can use to go over the existing silicone to stick it back down. Just follow the instructions on the pack. Give the existing silicone a good clean with an antibacterial solution like Milton and rinse off and dry before applying the new silicone. This will help to combat any nasties hiding under the silicone.
If there is too much silicone lifting I’d suggest rethinking purchasing the tank.

Smell
Most fish tanks do have a smell to them but we all know the regular fish tank smell how ever if there is a strange smell to the tank it could mean there is some type of contamination present.

Ornaments
Any ornaments that come with the tank should be throughly scrubbed. Some ornaments like ones with a lot of nooks and crannies should be soaked in antibacterial solutions over night if possible making sure to move the ornament around under the water until bubbles stop coming out that way there are no air pockets to hide any disease that may be present then rises thoroughly or reconsider using that ornament. Tank ornaments look great in pot plants and gardens.

Gravel
Any gravel should be cleaned well. Boiling water tipped over the gravel can kill most things. However you may also want to replace the gravel, old fish tank gravel can also be used in plant pots and gardens.

Somethings I would not consider buying second hand are filters. All sorts of contaminates can hide in filter no matter how well they have been cleaned and washed out.
Heaters are also something else I would think about before buying second hand. If it is a relatively new heater that is still under warranty then i might consider it.

When selling a tank try and have it some where that you can have some water in it at least half full. That way potential buyers will know it does not leak. It does not take long to empty water out of a tank.

Of course buying new is always the better option to ensure that everything is clean and going to work but we understand that sometimes financially this is difficult.

I hope these tips are helpful.
