Just wanting to let our clients and the local area know that we will be taking a well deserved break over the Christmas period this year. We will be finishing up Friday the 20th of December and will be back open for business on Thursday the 2nd of January 2025.

We wanted to take a moment to thank all of our clients for their love and support this year. It was great meeting many of you and we could not do what we love without you all.

Hoping you all have a lovely Christmas and Happy New Year! And we look forward to seeing you all again in 2025.

From Dr Louise, Kirstie and Julia

Fun fact: Goldfish DO NOT grow according to the size of their tank. These guys can get as large as 30cm long and live for decades. Poor husbandry and diet is what stunts their growth and leads to early death.
Do them a favour, get a bigger tank!

🥊 BATTLE OF THE BREEDS 🥊
Every Monday (but Tuesday this week) we put two breeds head to head to see who is the favourite! This week we ran out of dog breeds so to mix things up we have two very popular cat breeds; the Ragdoll and the Oriental Shorthair
Would you own one? Are we spot on this week? What breeds would you like to see next week?

This weeks Patient of the Week is Cotton!
Cotton is a Dwarf Lop rabbit who was adopted from the Wat Djerring Animal Facility.
Cotton sadly became widowed as his bunny wife passed away, but through this he has realised he wears the pants of the household now and has completely taken over his owners house like its nobody's business. Spoilt Cotton!

Did you know that Ducks have corkscrew shaped ge****ls???
Why you ask? Male and female ducks have opposing spirals so the females can try and avoid unwanted advances. How's that for a contraception method!

🐾This weeks Patient of the Week is Sherman! 🐾

Sherman is an adorable 11 week old Standard Schnauzer puppy we were lucky to see at our Pop up clinic for his second puppy vaccination. This polite boy was using his best manners throughout his whole appointment and we are so proud of him!
Its not often we get to see standard schnauzers (especially puppies), as their miniature relatives have taken over and stolen the spotlight, so we love when we get to see these guys and watch them grow into the distinguished gentleman they are!

Calici Alert!
We have had approximately 20 cases of suspected Calicivirus in the Mernda area.
Known as Sudden Death syndrome, this disease often kills without any symptoms. There is no cure, it is highly contagious and can be spread by mosquitoes.
Please ensure your bunny friends are vaccinated, even the strictly indoor ones. We don’t want to see anymore deaths in our fluffy friends.

To book in for rabbit vaccinations please shoot us an email at [email protected] or call us on 9435 4788.

🥊 BATTLE OF THE BREEDS 🥊
Every Monday we put two breeds head to head to see who is the favourite! This week we are comparing two breeds that are very popular in the community and everyone loves; Oodles and Miniature Dachshunds!
*note there are so many variations of poodle mix breeds we couldn't go through each one so we have generalised.

This weeks Patient of the week is Nandor!

Nandor is a 2yo certified silly boy with a silly eye who popped into our pop up clinic for his annual vaccination. During his health check we were able to discuss his eye situation and started making a plan to refer and get that checked out to make sure it isn't anything sinister. He was so happy and wiggly for us he barely noticed the poking and prodding and we hope he treats the ophthalmologist the same way!

ITS VET NURSE DAY!
Friday the 11th of October we recognise and celebrate the vet nurses, technicians and support staff that create the back bone of any veterinary clinic.

And so today we wanna say a BIG shout out to the two amazing epic Vet Nurses that I get the joy of working with at the Doreen District Vets - Kirstie and Julia! I could rattle off some lame dribble about how amazing these two ladies are for what they do, but lets get to some honesty!

In Australia, our vet nurses are poorly paid, highly variable in skill and training and do not have a registration body. In fact ANYONE can label themself a vet nurse! Throughout my career I've worked with many many nurses and can say from the bottom of my heart these two are the greatest.

These two ladies do an often thankless job - they deal with all the emails, the phone calls, the text messages, the Facebook messages. They have to create a schedule around our working hours, deal with the logistics of us being a homeless vet clinic during this period of waiting for council and our building. They spend hours researching things for our clients, following up on cases and ensuring we can provide the best most efficient service for our tiny growing business. All of this and sometimes even late at night out of hours to ensure our clients feel heard!

To Kirstie and Julia - Thankyou! I certainly try to thankyou as often as i can (sometimes with plants and coffee) but it is never enough. So thankyou - thankyou - thankyou... :-)

Beautiful Lena is our Patient of the Week this week!

This girl has those puppy dog eyes all sorted out! But as much as she tried it wasn't enough to not get her vaccination this week. To make the scary vaccine consultation better she feasted on bread the entire time which made her feel a lot safer.
Lena's newfie brother Reuben did not bat an eye the entire time, maybe Lena needs to learn a thing or two off her older brother!

Did you know rabbits eat their own poo???
Yes its gross but don't be alarmed, its vital for their gut health!

Bunny's have 2 types of faeces, one is the small round dry pellets they like to fling around the place. The tasty ones are a soft, squishy substance that they ingest directly from their bottom!

The soft poo they eat is basically how they recycle nutrients and absorb the maximum amount they can given their diet is pretty unexciting! The hard normal poo is their true waste product, which also makes a good addition to the compost heap!

Meet Donald our Patient of the Week!

Donald is a little 15yo crusty old man who comes into our pop up clinic for regular check ups. Donald spends most of his time lounging around enjoying his retirement in Kyneton, and he didn't get too cranky with us this week which made everyone's lives a little easier!

We love the visits we get from Donald and his mum who are long time stalkers of Dr. Lou, and hoping we inch ever so slightly closer to earning Donald's love as well.
