Safety Tips With Tonks!πŸ’ͺ🏽😎🀣🀣🀣

There's way too many videos going around of people getting their knife out before they even grab the pig, let alone get it under controlπŸ‘€πŸ‘€

It sets a bad example, that s**t is just dangerous, unnecessary and will one day end in an accident, with either sticking yourself or a dog. You can trip and fall, get charged and knocked over and you only have 1 hand to grab and control the pig.πŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ

I've known fellas who have unfortunately done it and it's not pretty, the reality is, you can die... We are usually out in remote or semi remote areas at all hours of the day and night, where help isn't just down the road and sometimes solo!!

Grab and control the pig, then get the knife out and finish the job as safe and as quickly as you can!

Hunt Safe All! ❀️😎

Pig Conditioning, it's a thing! 😎

Stubble season is well and truly here, and for those of you who can regularly travel to stubble for a hunt it's quite fascinating at how quickly the pigs can become touchy BUT also how quickly they will become quiet too, as theyre a highly intelligent and switched on animal..

When you say stubble running, most people have a vision of flying around stubble doing 80 plus, a full tray of dogs in cages and chained up screaming on the back and spotlights flying around crazy with pigs hitting top gear even before you get within 1km from them and youre just left with dust on the paddock showing where theyve just been.. But sometimes it doesn't have to be like this..

It still spins me out that only a week or so of poking around the outside of a stubble paddock quietly, engine just idling along with a calm spotlight shooting some pests here n there at how quiet the pigs can become. Now of course this has several other elements to it. Are you the only hunter allowed on the place? Is it heavily poached or road ran? Is it a big property with big paddocks? How often can you or do you hunt it? Etc.. Some things are out of your control.

But if it's just you, see how quiet they become and then hit them hard one night with the dogs and guns for maximum removal effectiveness. Instead of cleaning up tail enders bolting into the hills or scrub, or ending up 1km or more off the stubble for that good boar the nose dogs have found (which is great but then youre generally on foot in the scrub and there goes 30mins to 1hr of your night and some tired dogs and humans 🀣) you'll be able to quieten them down and get a proper good go at them. If the paddock is big enough and you just do slow laps around the outside, the pigs that are out in the middle will learn that if they stay out there, they're safe and you wont come out chasing them, then when you're ready, hit them in the middle where they can't get away as easily as theyre kms from the scrub safety. Now this may also take a while after harvesting, as the grain on the edges needs to be eaten first, as they generally won't walk out into the middle to feed when there's grain on the edges..πŸ€”

Thermals have enabled us to see pig activity alot better than a spotlight ever could.. If you spend a night "doing some recon" drive around the paddock after scanning with the thermal, seeing how they react will teach you their habits. Then park up with the wind in your favour and see how long they take to come back out, or see how many different mobs appear over few hours. It will most likely blow your mind and teach you alot about their behaviours and how screaming dogs and revving engines can trigger them!

A little bit of research and calmness just poking about can give you big results in the long run. But as always its each to their own and some places this isn't possible to do, but if you can do it, give it a try, stubble running doesn't always have to be crazy fast chaos.!πŸΆπŸ—

🐢🐢🐢Put the extra time and effort in, its well worth it in the long run!!πŸ—πŸ—πŸ—

The amount of young half started or started dogs that are up for sale these days is sad. Ads like "will make excellent dog with the right work", "has potential to be a main dog", "will be a good dog in right hands" etc etc blah blah... πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ If it's gunna be that good, keep it, you're already over half way there!!

Now I get it, people's lives change, things happen that we can't plan for and sometimes dogs need to be off loaded or rehomed, that's not what this post is about....!!!

It appears that more and more people these days are looking for that one in a million dog that just does it all naturally, and they sure are out there but they're like rocking horse s**t, and youre lucky to find one in your whole hunting career.

Instead of starting a dog and realising its not a freak and selling it on, to just get another and start the process again, and potentially do the same thing in 6 or 12 months timeπŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ keep that youngen and put the extra time into it that it needs to be that "main dog" or "awesome dog with the right work"..

Teach it to push through or jump fences if it won't go through them and is missing pigs, hell I've had to do that plenty of times.

Spend time non target proofing the dog if it has issues with those animals.

Teach it to pick the mob if it's just grabbing the first thing that it comes across, it's frustrating but can certainly be achieved..

Teach it to find the best you can, do scent work with it, build its drive up and show it what it can do with its nose and what's at the end of that smell!!

Teach it how to have an on/off switch if its a pain at home when you're not hunting....

These are just a few things that people seem to get rid of young dogs for. Now to help you on your jouney to pig hunting greatness, do your research and don't be in a rush. Buy quality bred pups from good working parents. Parents and grandparents that show those desired traits you want, increase your chances when you invest the time and effort into that young dog.. Nothing's guaranteed of course but it can sure make the journey a heck of alot easier on you and the dog!

There's plenty of lines of dogs out there with natural drive and hunt, almost seem to be born with only pigs on their mind and won't look sideways at anything else, instinctively jump fences and love to pick the mob from the outset of their hunting career... These are the pups that are the easiest to train imo.... and I've seen the odd dog here n there πŸ€£πŸ€£πŸ‘πŸ½

Happy Training!πŸ’™πŸ’™

Bragging about a kennel set-up worth tens of thousands of dollars doesn't mean your dogs are worth anywhere near that, or the pups they produce will even be any good.πŸ€£πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™‚οΈπŸ€·πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ

Too many people have more dollars than sense these days, and think money value means quality..

Sure there are brilliant expensive set-ups owned and built by some really great dog people, who produce proper quality dogs, but when you throw money amounts around like it means something about the dogs then it's time to stay humble.. 😎😎

Some of the best working dogs to ever walk the planet more than likely were born in a hay shed and spent their down time on a length of chain with a hollow tree stump or a 44 under an old peppercorn tree..πŸ’ͺπŸ½πŸΆπŸ—

Keep it legal and ethical people!!! For all our sakes please!

Standing around filming multiple dogs on a pig yelling "get hold of him" over and over isnt impressive.. and falls into the illegal category of hunting, by "prolonging suffering" to the pig and your dogs.. Yes, the powers that be take the dogs welfare into the equation also!!

Impress everyone by hooking in as fast as you can do close the show for the pigs sake and your dogs too..😎πŸ’ͺπŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½πŸΆπŸ—

Remember.... film your mate doing his job asap = legal.
Stand around when it could be sorted = illegal and possible fine and charges

How I learned to start young dogs.. πŸ—πŸΆ

I was always taught to take pups/young dogs along in the cage for the experience and exposure from a young age if you can, making it all positive, but not to let them start until they're ready to do so both physically and mentally.

Mentally a pup may think he's ready, and one bad experience can potentially ruin them for good.. eg a 10 year old boxer could be a 10 year old champ, then jumps in the ring with Mike Tyson, takes one punch and never wants to box again. Now if a pups catching small pigs, thinks he's all that confidence wise and then runs into a big rank boar, it could be all over in seconds, and ruin the dog for good. When they're older if their confidence gets a knock, then the chances of them getting over it are greatly increased..

Physically, I like to wait until the dog can jump on the buggy or Ute for obvious reasons, and physically can handle a decent pig. Plus it helps them with some traits like picking the mob, which imo can be passed on. Nothing like a surprise when they go and find a good pig before you expect them to and if they're big enough then it's no dramas. Also being big enough to keep up with the older dogs and fast enough to catch pigs can help eliminate issues such as trailbarking from frustration of not being able to keep up.

Now I know everyone wants their pups and young dogs catching pigs yesterday, but in the long run the patience pays off. Rushing to start them as pups on small pigs, can mean that's all they may want to catch when they're bigger and then you get frustrated at them, but it's your fault for starting them on small stuff. Plus when they work with their puppy teeth still, you risk them breaking and causing issues. Waiting for the adult teeth to come through is another reason to wait until they're older.

All pups and young dogs are different, and each to their own, but this method has been successful for me over the years..

Young Regina George below, getting ready to start soon, she's a bit over 6 months old and pretty robust and outgoing, with a fairly sensible head on her when it's time to listen😎 plus she's nuts too which always helpsπŸ€£πŸ€£πŸΆπŸ—
