Thank you to QRF and the lovely rat community for a fun, friendly day at QRF’s last show of the year. I rarely (pretty much never) post our winning show results, but so proud of how our ratties did today so sharing our results. It’s been 5+ years of breeding (and high and lows) with our sole breeding focus being health and temperament, to get where we are now. And to unintentionally produce some rats that are also of a standard to be shown in varieties has been a nice surprise. When choosing holdbacks to run on as potential breeders, if all other things are equal, we will avoid breeding from rats whose markings suggest they carry the h^e (extreme) allele. This is to eliminate the possibility of producing BEW babies (which are due to 2 copies of the h^e allele at the hooded locus) which have a higher incidence of deafness. This selection in our breeding has led to us producing hooded rats with nice solid stripes, some of whom appeared to meet the show standard!! So we decided we may as well enter some in the varieties section of the show and see get some feedback on them in relation to the varieties standards. Breeding to meet the varieties show standards has never been an objective of ours, as the health and temperament of pet rats in Qld has always had so much room for improvement, so health and temperament always has been, and will continue to be, our breeding focus.
So it was a wonderful surprise today when our sweet “RMR Candy”, an 11 month old girl who had her first litter just 3.5 months ago, won Best Rat in Show. She birthed 15 babies, raised 12 of them herself (3 were fostered into another mum with a smaller litter), and the whole time she held her condition amazingly, and didn’t develop RI at any stage. I’m ever so happy that several of her babies have gone out to amazing pet homes where I know they will have the most amazing lives, and I look forward to seeing how they grow up and wish them a long and healthy life in their new homes, and their owners many successes with them at future shows.
Ps. My daughter insisted I include some babies in the photos of our “Best Rat Breeder” and “Best Pet Rat Breeder” awards.

🐀 'How Long Do Pet Rats Live?' 🐀

This is a question we commonly seen asked, and debated, on rat groups online and is something we feel is super important to discuss.

On the Internet, you may see many unsubstantiated claims of rats live well over 3 4 or even 5 years old that can make you feel bad that your beloved baby 'only' made it to 2, for example. The reality is, that although there are varying factors and exceptions, the average age of pet rats is 1.5 - 2.5 years, with somewhere around 2 ish often being the average 🩷

After quite a hiatus from breeding, we have our first litter in nearly 7 months. An older mum, hence the smaller litter. A very big thank you to Kerri-Anne once again, for allowing RMR Parsley to come for another visit to get some ladies pregnant. He is nearly 2 years of age now, and still in excellent health with no signs of HLD, so I’m very grateful to be able to continue using him in our breeding program. His parents, grandparents and great grandparents were all born at RMR, and his is certainly our best line we are working with. And I’m especially proud of the fact that this is the 3rd time he has come to have some lady-friends, and each time he happily reintegrates with his male companions without issue. He is a jackpot, and exactly what I am aiming for in my breeding program: exceptional long-term health, amazing temperament (both with humans and ratties), no HA but enough hormones to be able to breed. Thank you Kerri-Anne and Parsley! Perfection in a rat 💜💜💜. Can’t wait for some more little parcels to arrive in the next month! Ps. For anyone wanting to enquire about adopting, we breed for our own goals, not to have babies available to sell. So it will likely be a minimum of 4-5 months before we may have any babies available, and even then it likely won’t be many. Priority always goes to owners that have demonstrated they can provide exceptionally good homes for our ratties and are willing to stay in touch long-term to keep us updated on our babies.

🤎🌰 Rats Weekly 🌰🤎

The next installment is here! Our imaginings of what a magazine would look like if it was written by rats, for rats 🐀

04/04/2024

Just a quick update. Briefer than intended as typed it out and lost it the first time. Tech is not my strong point! We currently don’t have any rats available (our last litters were born more than 4 months ago), and don’t have any animals currently in breeding, and will be a while before we do. So will likely be 4-5 months before we may have youngsters available again. We have some other family and life priorities that need to take precedence for the next little while. Apologies if you’ve messaged and I haven’t responded. Rather than reply to everyone individually, figured it was easier to just post here to let people know. Once we start having babies again, and there is the possibility of having some babies available for adoption, I’ll start sharing cute baby rat photos here again. But just so you are aware, we only breed for our own goals and don’t breed high volume to sell to the public. So we only have a small number of rats available occasionally, and only to the very best of homes.

Back due to popular demand! 🖤 This week's installment of 'Rats Weekly' - our imagining of what magazine would look like if it was written by rats, for rats 🐀

Hi folks. Sorry for no updates for a while. Have had a lot on. And sorry to those I’ve been slow replying to messages for. We currently have a few 4-6 month old boys looking for their forever homes. A lot of adopters often want babies, but unless there’s an obvious reason why we don’t want to hold back a particular rat, we often run quite a lot of our youngsters on to the 4-6 month age bracket, to give us more time to assess who is best for us to retain as our future breeders. So if you would be interested in adopting boys just that bit older, send us a message.

If you’re free tomorrow highly recommend this for a day out. Lots of amazing rodent goodies and Xmas gifts will be available for purchase. Sadly I won’t be there as I’ll be doing the good parent and taking my kids to their martial arts Xmas party which they all desperately wanted to go to.

Giving a huge shout-out and Thank you to Kerri-Anne, for allowing her beautiful boy RMR Parsley come visit for a dirty weekend (couple of weeks!). Super proud of Parsley for being an absolute gentleman with the ladies, then happily going straight back in with all his male companions as soon as he got back home. The ultimate test for HA!! He and his litter brother RMR Presto were born at Rainbow Magic Rattery in July 2022, so are just over 12 months old now. RMR Presto (the boy we retained) has been very slow getting any girls pregnant (the downside of breeding HA out of your lines - low libido), so Parsley visited to help his brother out! So grateful to Kerri-Anne for allowing Parsley to visit, as breeding comes with the slim possibility of triggering HA. Our lines here in Australia have not been established long enough to gaurantee every boy in every litter will not develop HA, and if they have low level HA it can sometimes only appear after breeding. Presto and Parsley are from my best line, so I was thrilled to see how well Parsley did and what a beautiful gentle boy he is. Huge Thanks again to Kerri-Anne, and now the waiting begins, to see if either of his girlfriends are pregnant!!!
Watch this space!!!!!

Breeding Update!
Sorry for the long time since our last post. Life has been really busy, and we’ve had constant revolving RI in the human kids and I since Easter. We haven’t been having as many litters this year as we have slowed our breeding as doing things well is very time consuming, and time seems to be in short supply this year. Since making steady progress towards our breeding goals (of improving health & temperament) over the last couple years, our breeding model has evolved. We don’t pair our girls till around 9 months of age these days, so we can assess health and temperament over a longer time period before choosing who to breed. A consequence of this is significantly smaller litters, and so we are keeping back most of the babies we breed.
Consequently we don’t have any babies available at present, and it will probably be a couple months at least before we do. Apologies if you’ve messaged enquiring about babies, and not received a reply. We get so many messages I’m struggling to keep up with replies.
If you are still keen to adopt RMR babies in the future, feel free to message us. However, for your enquiry to be taken seriously, it needs to be clear that you have made significant effort to educate yourself about what is needed to provide a high standard of care for rats, including appropriate housing, litter & bedding, food, enrichment, and medical care (when necessary). There are some excellent information resources on the internet, including the “Rat Awareness Week” page, Isamu Rattery webpage, and the “Australian R-A-T Lovers” page. And as always, if you have previously adopted rats from us, if your circumstances ever chance such that you can no longer keep your rattie’s, we will always take back our babies, no matter their age.

Wanna go to space?

We can't get you a seat on a space shuttle but we can absolutely recommend that you check out the Queensland Rodent Fanciers Show which is Space themed!

This is the RESCHEDULED Show from earlier in April and we are so excited to see it still going ahead!

What is a QRF Show, I hear you ask?

It's a community day for rodents and their people! There are stalls for artists and creators, there is tasty food, a raffle or two and most importantly...the rats and mice are on show! There are categories for pets and for varieties and awards handed out at the days end.

Think dog Show...but tinier!

We will be there as the Rescue with a table, some merch and some second hand items to raise funds for the Rescue. Some of our amazing will be there too!

What are the details...

📆: Sunday 2 April
🕙: 10am (arrive by 9am if you are entering the show and/or have a stall table)

⚠️⚠️ Make sure you keep an eye on the official Queensland Rodent Fanciers page for any show updates!⚠️⚠️

⬇️ See more info from the QRF Show Team ⬇️

Entries will close Friday, 21st April, at 12pm midday.

****Reminder! Please treat your rodents with Kitten Revolution a week before the show! This is important to prevent the spread of mites and lice. If your rodent has signs of infestation (small white dots stuck to fur that do not come off, missing patches of hair, excessive scratching) please do not bring them to show!****

It’s hard work being a Mumma rat. Here is RMR Indigo, a self mink girl who is 14 months old, with her first litter, sired by RMR Garnet (a blue mink hooded rex). Only 4 babies so they are real little chubba’s!
