๐Ÿพ Reggieโ€™s Golden Rule: No Hot Cross Buns for Dogs!๐Ÿž๐Ÿ’›
Meet Reggie, a beautiful 3-year-old Golden Retriever who belongs to our amazing Nurse Ash. While out on a walk, Reggie sniffed out a packet of hot cross buns someone had left behind โ€” and before Ash could stop her, sheโ€™d already eaten some! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
Hot cross buns may seem harmless, but they contain raisins, which are highly toxic to dogs and can cause serious issues like kidney failure, even in small amounts.
Thankfully, Ash acted fast and brought Reggie straight into the clinic, where Dr Lee jumped into action. Reggie received immediate treatment, which involved:
๐Ÿ’‰ Inducing vomiting to remove the buns from her stomach and prevent absorption of toxins
๐Ÿ’‰ Giving an anti-nausea injection to help her feel better afterwards
Because Nurse Ash was quick to seek medical care, Reggie's stay with us was very short. She was such a brave girl and is now back to her happy, tail-wagging self. ๐Ÿ’›
๐Ÿšจ If your dog eats raisins, sultanas, grapes, hot cross buns or chocolate โ€” donโ€™t wait!
Call us right away at Cardiff (4954 7055) or Cameron Park (4958 6635).
Time really is critical with toxin ingestions.
Stay safe this Easter โ€” and keep those human treats well out of pawโ€™s reach! ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿพ

โš ๏ธ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ Hot Cross Buns & Pets Donโ€™t Mix! ๐ŸžโŒ
Theyโ€™re a delicious Easter treat for us โ€” but hot cross buns can be highly toxic to dogs and cats. Even small amounts can cause serious health issues, especially because of one hidden danger: raisins (and sultanas).
๐Ÿšจ Why are hot cross buns dangerous?
Hot cross buns often contain:
โŒ Raisins & sultanas โ€“ can cause kidney failure in dogs and possibly cats
โŒ Nutmeg โ€“ can be toxic in large amounts
โŒ Yeast dough โ€“ can cause dangerous bloating and alcohol toxicity if unbaked
Thereโ€™s no safe number of raisins โ€“ some pets react severely to just one or two!
๐Ÿฉบ Symptoms to watch for after ingestion:
๐Ÿ”น Vomiting
๐Ÿ”น Diarrhoea
๐Ÿ”น Lethargy
๐Ÿ”น Loss of appetite
๐Ÿ”น Increased thirst or urination
๐Ÿ”น Signs of kidney damage (can appear within hours or take days)
๐Ÿ“ž What should you do if your pet eats hot cross buns?
Call us immediately โ€” the sooner we start treatment, the better the outcome.

REMINDER: Tick Season.
Dog and cat owners need to be vigilant, particularly in tick-prone areas.

Ticks breed mainly along the east coast of Australia in warm and humid weather so now is the time for pet owners to ensure they take preventive measures to avoid what can sometimes be a fatal outcome.

Paralysis ticks tend to attach to the head and neck area of the pet and on the chest and the front of the leg but can generally be found on any part of the body. Ticks release a toxin when they feed, which leads to a condition known as tick paralysis.

Common signs of tick paralysis include difficulty walking, gurgling and choking. Dogs may not be able to bark properly.

Ideally pet owners should check dogs and cats regularly by running their hands over the animal to feel for anything unusual.
In cats, ticks often latch around the neck where they canโ€™t groom, so itโ€™s important to pay special attention to this area. If you think your pet has a tick the best course of action is to contact your vet.

Even if you find and remove a tick itโ€™s still important that your pet is seen by a vet as your pet can be affected by the toxin for 24 hours after removal or longer. Early treatment gives the best chance of survival.

The only thing better than early treatment is prevention.

For details about tick prevention please call Cameron Park Vets on 4958 6635.

๐ŸŒž Keep Your Pets Cool This Summer! ๐ŸŒž

As the Newcastle summer heats up, our furry friends are at risk of heat stress and heatstroke. ๐Ÿพ Itโ€™s crucial to take steps to keep them safe and comfortable during these scorching days. Here's how you can protect your pets:

โœ… Provide shade and fresh water:
Make sure your pets have a cool, shady spot to rest and access to fresh water at all times.

โœ… Avoid walks during the hottest hours:
Take your dog for a walk early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Remember, if the pavement is too hot for your hand, itโ€™s too hot for their paws! ๐Ÿ•

โœ… NEVER leave pets in parked cars:
Even if you think youโ€™ll only be a minute, temperatures inside a car can rise to dangerous levels in seconds. Itโ€™s not worth the risk!

๐Ÿšจ Watch out for signs of heatstroke:
Be alert for these symptoms of heat-related illness in your pets:
๐Ÿพ Heavy panting
๐Ÿพ Excessive drooling
๐Ÿพ Lethargy or weakness
๐Ÿพ Vomiting or collapse

If you notice any of these signs, act fast! Move your pet to a cooler area, and call us immediately.

Your quick action could save your petโ€™s life! Letโ€™s keep our beloved pets safe and healthy this summer. ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŽ† Keep Your Pets Calm This New Year's Eve ๐ŸŽ†

New Yearโ€™s Eve is tonight, and while fireworks bring joy to many of us, they can be very stressful for our furry friends. ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ Here are some tips to help your pets stay calm and comfortable during the celebrations:

1๏ธโƒฃ Create a Safe Space: Set up a quiet, cozy area where your pet can retreat to if they feel anxious. A familiar blanket or toy can provide extra comfort.
2๏ธโƒฃ Keep Them Indoors: Ensure your pet stays indoors during the fireworks to prevent them from running away in fear. Close windows, curtains, and doors to reduce noise and bright flashes.
3๏ธโƒฃ Use Calming Aids: Consider using pet-safe calming products like anxiety wraps, pheromone sprays, or calming treats. Talk to us if youโ€™d like recommendations!
4๏ธโƒฃ Play Background Noise: Soft music or white noise can help mask the sound of fireworks and keep your pet relaxed.
5๏ธโƒฃ Stay Calm: Pets often pick up on their owners' emotions. Stay calm and reassuring to help them feel safe.
6๏ธโƒฃ Identification is Key: Make sure your petโ€™s microchip details are up to date and their collar has a clear ID tag, just in case they get spooked and run off.

Your pets rely on you for comfort and security. Letโ€™s help them have a peaceful start to the new year! ๐Ÿพ

If your pet is particularly anxious, give us a call at Cameron Park Vet Clinic on ๐Ÿ“ž 4958 6635. Weโ€™re here to help with advice or to discuss other calming options.

Hereโ€™s to a safe and happy New Year for you and your pets! ๐ŸŽ‰โœจ
