You may have heard some reports of Parvovirus in the Maitland area over the last few weeks but today it has come to our attention, some cases have been reported a little closer to home.

Areas reported to have had parvovirus cases include Windale, Mount Hutton and Thornton.

Please make sure your dogs are up to date with their vaccines and ensure all puppies complete their FULL course of THREE puppy needles.

Parvovirus DOES kill but it can be easily prevented by staying up to date with vaccines. It's not good enough to say I don't get my dog vaccinated as "my pet never goes anywhere" because you, as an owner, do go out and about. It is possible to unknowingly bring parvovirus into the home ie on your shoes or clothing.

If your pet is experiencing vomitting, inappetance, lethargy or diarrhoea (with or without blood in it) please contact your local vet for advice.

Preparing Your Pets for Winter
It's that time of year again. We are all rugging up and getting out the gas heaters but what about our pets? Colder winter months can pose special health risks to pets.

"My dog has a thick coat so do I really need to worry about leaving him outside in winter"?

No matter what the temperature outside, wind chill can be devastating, especially if combined with dampness, rain or sleet. Shorthaired, very young, and senior dogs left outside unsupervised when the temperature drops are at risk for problems related to exposure to the cold.

If your dog must live outside, protection from the elements is critical. An insulated doghouse is a must. It should be elevated a few inches above the ground to prevent moisture from accumulating inside. Carpeting, a blanket, or a padded bed should cover the floor of the doghouse. It must be big enough for your dog to stand up, lie down, and turn around comfortably, but small enough to contain body heat. The doorway of the doghouse should face away from prevailing winds, and burlap or canvas hung over the opening can act as a "door".

Did you know, outdoor dogs need more calories in the winter just to keep warm as well as adequate water.

Warm coats are great for pets that are senior, small or have thin coats. It's ok to wrap a loose blanket over your pet, but don’t tuck them in. They still need to be able to move away from it if they overheat. Try to walk your furry friend during the day when it’s not as cold.

"Should I bring my outdoor rabbit inside to let her warm up during cold weather"?
While it is best for rabbits to be housed indoors at all times, some bunnies do reside outside. It is very tempting, when the weather gets colder, to allow rabbits to spend some time indoors to "give them a break" from the cold. Unfortunately, this is much like a person bundled up in a winter coat, walking into the house and sitting down for dinner without removing his or her parka.

After dinner, this same person then leaves the warm house once again to brave the elements. It does not take long for a serious chill to take hold. This is what happens when a rabbit, whose body has adapted to the variations in the weather and that can cope with the cold, is brought into the house. Their body is unable to compensate for the external warmth, becomes overheated, and then succumbs to the cold once returned to the outdoor environment. Pneumonia is a common outcome. Rabbits that live outdoors must be protected from wind and rain,. However, rapidly changing temperatures are a dangerous scenario.

A viable compromise may be to move rabbits or guinea pigs hutches inside the house or garage for the entire winter. Be sure to provide extra straw and hay so small pets can burrow and hide and keep bedding dry.

"How can I tell if my pet is feeling the cold"?
Your pet may be shivering, trembling or cuddling into warm spaces. Dogs and cats may curl up on your bed, lounge or near the heater as they seek warmth. Pets will also start to avoid lying on cold tiles and will choose to rest in places with warm flooring or carpet.

"What Are Some Common Cold Weather Problems for Pets"?
Sore and stiff joints can be a common condition in the cooler months, especially when it comes to our senior pets. You might notice your pet is having difficulty rising after a nap or is a little slower in the winter months. Dry skin is another problem, especially if it is very cold outside and then they sit inside by the heater. If your pet is outside, make sure to thoroughly towel dry them to remove any excess water from their coat. Try to avoid any extreme temperature changes.

Generally, if you’re indoors and you’re feeling cold, then your pet will be cold too!

Congratulations!!! 🥳

Happy graduation to this entertaining bunch! 🎓
All puppies did so well in puppy preschool over the last four weeks, learning new things and making new friends while getting nice and muddy outside.

Puppy preschool is a great way to allow your new fur baby to socialise with other dog's safety at a young age.

Did you know we can offer CBD prescriptions for patients in our care?
www.petcann.com.au

PetCann is an Australian pioneer of innovative plant-based meds for pets, connecting vets and pet parents with trusted CBD formulations for dogs, cats and more.

In Australia, veterinarians can only legally prescribe medical cannabinoids for animals which satisfy the requirements for cannabidiol (CBD) formulations under Schedule 4 (this means the formulation contains 98% or more CBD and less than 2% of total other cannabinoids). In contrast, medicinal cannabis formulations available for humans are available with varying levels of CBD, THC (another phytocannabinoid with psychoactive properties) and other cannabinoids. Human medicinal cannabis products are often Schedule 8 and not allowed for pets.

Because of the size and species differences between pets and humans, the concentration and dosing of medicinal cannabis for pets will also vary significantly from human products. Human preparations have varying concentrations of the active molecules as well as other ingredients that most likely are unsuitable and potentially unsafe for pets.

Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is a compound produced by the cannabis plant. Unlike the notorious cannabinoid, Tetrahyrdocannabinol (THC), CBD does not produce any euphoric effects. This means that CBD pet medicines won’t get your pet high.

How does it work?

CBD works through the relationship it has with the body’s endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex system in the body that regulates many critical functions through a network of cannabinoid receptors. Cannabinoids act on these receptors which may influence your pets immune system, mood, memory and more. A high functioning ECS ensures balance in cells, tissues and organs.

UPDATE - LEPTOSPIROSIS VACCINES ARE NOW BACK IN STOCK.

After almost 12 months without access to Lepto vaccines we are please to say that we now have ample supplies in stock. Lepto initially was a disease that was most prevalent in the Inner West of Sydney but after the outbreak in the Hunter in 2022 we now strongly recommend leptospirosis vaccination for any dogs visiting the Sydney area or dogs that go off the road and have access to stagnant water sources that may have been contaminated with rat urine.

What are the symptoms of leptospirosis?
Signs of infection include fever, vomiting, loss of appetite, red urine and ultimately meningitis and kidney failure.

If your pet's vaccine has lapsed over 12 months then they will need a booster vaccine 2-4 weeks after their first catch up vaccine.

For puppies starting or part way through their vaccine schedule, the leptospirosis vaccine can be given from 6 weeks of age
Cats are not as at risk as dogs and are not commonly affected.

It's getting chilly again in the morning and afternoon, and we've seen a rise in our osteoarthritis cases.

We spoke last year about Beransa but here is a refresher...
Beransa Osteoarthritis (OA) Injection
Beransa (Bedinvetmab) has been a much anticipated O.A. management medication for dogs.

This new medication works in a different pain-relief pathway to all other medications we have used up until now.

This injection is a monoclonal antibody which targets nerve growth factor, a pain receptor in the joints. By blocking these receptors we block the pain messages from being delivered thus helping with pain relief and inflammation in the joints. Not only can it resolve pain signs but by reducing inflammatory messengers it can reduce the progression of arthritis in the joints.

When used for the right candidates, the pain-relief we see is far greater than any other medications we have used previously.
This subcutaneous injection generally lasts for one month and if successful it can be safely administered monthly to help alleviate signs of O.A.

For severe cases of O.A. we can still use oral pain-relief medications as required safely.

It has a wide safety margin and can generally be given without concern to any adult or elderly dog. This is because monoclonal antibodies are natural proteins and require very little metabolism and detoxification by the liver and kidneys, unlike other pain relief medications like nsaids which can have a higher metabolic demand and higher risk of side effects.

Things to consider
Beransa is a prescription injectable drug so you must take your pet to the vet monthly to receive treatment. This can be done with a nurse.
Beransa may be more expensive than older generation pain medications, however from experience owners generally can justify the cost with the positive results seen at home.

Your pet must be a suitable candidate for this injection, we only expect successful results for cases with appropriate O.A. signs.

The 2024 World Veterinary Day is celebrated on 27th of April and has the theme ‘Veterinarians are essential health workers.

Veterinarians competencies must be regarded as an essential and integral part of health at large. The application of veterinary science contributes not only to animal health and well-being but also to humans physical, mental and social well-being.

This dimension of the veterinarians work often remains invisible to society, but protecting and improving the health of people and their communities is an essential part of the vet profession.

All graduated veterinarians have undergone comprehensive medical training, and regardless of their professional area of practice, are responsible, for promoting public health and food safety and security.
