Sometimes you need to let them be hooligans!!
A coaches job is to set up fun challenges to create learning experiences for their subjects.
Today we had a game where the handlers had the full room to work their dogs and keep their engagement no matter what is happening.
After each minute the room got smaller until they were forced to work in close proximity to another dog. This puts pressure on the handlers to lead their dogs to the right head space at each level before having to work so close. Where it will be the hardest for the dogs. Specially being reactive.
Earning a High-Strung Dog’s Trust Through Patience and Understanding
We talk about the process of gaining the trust of a high-strung dog named Wookie. We explain that it’s not about bribing the dog or forcing it to comply, but rather showing the dog over time that we are not a threat. By being fair, respectful, and working at the dog’s pace, we can help Wookie feel more comfortable and open to working with us. The biggest reward is not in treats, but in the dog’s growing understanding that we mean no harm.

The Truth About Effective Dog Training
In this video, we discuss the realities of dog training and how ‘fear-free’, ‘force-free’, and ‘positive only’ approaches can be marketing gimmicks. We explain that many dogs come to us in a state of fear, and it’s our job to help them see the world is not as scary as they think. We also discuss how we use an empathetic approach and the application of pressure to push dogs through their self-limiting beliefs, creating a stronger and more confident dog who can enjoy life more.
