USE 👏🏼 TICK 👏🏼 PREVENTION!!!

**** IMPORTANCE NOTICE ****

QLD cannot currently access Tick Antiserum. This means if your pet becomes symptomatic, there could be no treatment.

Clinic’s (including ourselves) have bare minimum supplies on hand but this could run out quickly.

SO PLEASE HAVE YOUR PETS ON A TICK PREVENTION!

If you are unsure if your pet is up-to-date, then it means there's a good chance they aren’t.

Nexgard, Nexgard Spectra, Braveto Chews/Topspots and Revolution Plus are all great products that we recommend. However, no product is 100% guaranteed in preventing tick paralysis. It is essential you also give your pet a thorough tick search every night in tick season.

Ticks are out and about!!
Make sure your dogs are on tick prevention and keep up with daily searches

‼️Important! Paralysis Tick Prevention.‼️

Please find some helpful information below about how to keep your pets protected from paralysis ticks.

🐾Symptoms of Paralysis Tick Poisoning
The paralysis tick causes paralysis in a variety of forms, but typically starts with weakness of the hindquarters and staggering gait, progressing to total paralysis along with difficult, exaggerated breathing. Other early symptoms include the appearance that the dog has something stuck in its throat (gurgling), vomiting or heavy, loud breathing and not being able to bark properly.

🐾How to Identify a Paralysis Tick
Paralysis ticks can be identified by their grey body and their legs around their head. Unlike other adult ticks, paralysis ticks have one pair of brown legs closest to their head, then two pairs of white legs and then one pair of brown legs closest to their body.

🐾4 Methods to Prevent Tick Paralysis
Paralysis tick prevention is essential and you must take precautions if you live in a tick area or are travelling to the east coast on holidays. There are several options when it comes to paralysis tick prevention products and methods, each depends on your dog’s age, size and lifestyle.

1. Daily Tick Searches
Search your dog thoroughly every day, especially around the head, ears and under the collar where ticks commonly attach. Don’t forget to check between the toes and under the tail. Clipping your dog’s coat short, especially during the tick season, makes performing tick searches much easier. It is recommended to use a tick preventative as well as daily tick searches. If you find a tick, remove it immediately with tweezers or better still, a tick-removing device, which you can get from your vet or pet store. Try to gently lever the tick off, not to squeeze the tick’s body.
If you remove a tick after your dog has started showing some signs, you should seek veterinary attention. If your dog is paralysed, you must seek veterinary attention immediately.

2. Tick Collars
Tick collars can provide protection but in tick paralysis areas, daily searching of the entire body is still recommended. Don’t forget to remove the collar before washing or swimming.
Kiltix Collar – 6 weeks protection
Seresto Collar – 4months protection (Dogs), 8month prevention (Cats)

3. Oral /Chewable
Oral chews are easy to administer once every month for paralysis tick prevention. Oral chews like Nexgard Spectra can also be used for flea and worming.
Nexgard Chew – 1 month protection
Nexgard Spectra Chew – 1 month protection

4. Spot-on Products
Spot-on tick prevention products like Bravecto both repels and kills paralysis ticks when applied every 14 days. The products are suitable to use with dogs that occasionally swim, but some spot-on products are toxic to cats so use with caution.
Bravecto Spot-on DOG – 6months
Bravecto Spot-on CAT – 3months
Revolution PLUS Cat – 5 weeks

These are just a few of the products available to protect your pet from paralysis ticks. Talk to us next time you visit Bellmere Veterinary Practice - Southern Cross Veterinarians and we will help you find the best option for your pet.

Prevention is always the best cure. Stay safe. 🐶🐱🐾❤️

MATERNITY LEAVE

I’m officially halfway! 😬

I’ve been getting a few questions regarding maternity leave.
My last grooming day will ideally be on the 9th December, which will give me a few weeks to prepare and rest before bubs arrival.

That being said, dog grooming can be very taxing on the body with long periods or standing in one spot, bending, lifting and reaching to the back of the table. I will be listening to my body and what it is telling me to do, so I may finish earlier.

I am not sure how long I will have off after bub is born, that will be a wait and see thing as to how I’m feeling.

I have reached out to a few local groomers that are able to take you on while I’m away and can give you their details at your last appointment with me.

If you have read this far then well done, you’re amazing.

Just a little update for you all 😊
We will be moving very shortly (still don’t have a date for you).
I will try and make the transition as smooth as possible however with moving the container I may have to reschedule some appointments to fit around the crane company.
Can’t wait to see you all at Elimbah very soon!

In a few weeks I’ll be moving my salon to Elimbah, just 5 minutes past the Caboolture Showgrounds. I’ll keep you up to date on my moving date and those with appointments in the coming weeks will be notified accordingly. Please note, I will not be advertising my new address. It will only be given out when you make an appointment.

Old dogs don't die; they can't. They've merely run up ahead; they're waiting for us just out of sight. Close your eyes late at night and you may smell his musky odor, or perhaps hear his snuffle from the next room. Pay attention and you may feel his nose on your hand or the back of your calf. When your final day comes, you can go on to meet him; he's never left you and never will, and when you close your eyes for the last time, you'll open them again to be met with his Bright eyes and wagging tail.

Old dogs don't die, at least, not those dogs who take the biggest chunks of our hearts with them when they leave us. Those dogs are inextricably part of our souls, and they go with us wherever we are. Though we may not see them, we know they're there because our heart is still beating; we still breathe, and those of us who have been truly touched by a good dog know our lives really started the day we met them.

Magnificent dogs don't die. They shepherd our dreams and only allow the good ones through the gates of our consciousness. They watch over us much as they did in life, and that moment when we step just barely outside of death or disaster, it's because they moved our feet or they stopped short in front of us as they did in life.

You see, a good dog is something only given to a few people. They are a gift from the universe and, though they're with us only a short time, they never really leave us. They are loyalty and love perfected, and once we are graced with that sort of love we can never lose it. We merely lose sight of it for a time, and that is our fault; for how can love like that ever go away?

It can't. It can't, and it never will. For these brave souls trade their hearts for ours, and they beat together beyond sickness, beyond death. They are ours, and we are theirs, for every sunrise and every sunset, until the sun blazes its last and we once again join the stars.

RAIN 🌧
With all the rain we are forecasted to get for the rest of the week. I just wanted to let everyone know that the driveway will be ok, just a small puddle which has a hard bottom so you won’t get stuck. I have a small car and have never had any problems on the driveway.

If you are uncomfortable with driving in the rain to your appointment, please don’t hesitate to change it.

Stay safe and dry

Don’t forget about your pets in this heat 🥵

If you’re hot, you can bet they are too!

What are the symptoms of dog heat stroke? The most telling symptom of heat stroke in dogs is excessive panting. Other symptoms may include signs of discomfort such as drooling, reddened gums, vomiting, diarrhea, mental dullness or loss of consciousness, uncoordinated movement, and collapse.

A little bit about me

Hello, my name is Jennifer. I have been in the pet industry since 2015. I opened Jen’s Dog Grooming in July 2019 and it has been the best thing I have ever done, working with dogs surely has its highs and lows but overall it is the best job I could have asked for. I love all types of animals but dogs are most definitely my favourite! I currently have 1 Chocolate Labrador called Josie and 1 cat called Maisy.

A little bit about me, I really enjoy being outdoors and going camping with my friends and family. I am quite a shy person but if dogs is the topic of conversation, you won’t be able to shut me up! 10 of my favourite breeds would be; Labradors (or course haha), Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Golden Retrievers, Pomeranians, Maltese, Poodles (all sizes), Bichon Frise, Shih tzu, Border Collies and Schnauzers.

I look forward to what the future holds. I am currently in the process of converting a shipping container into a salon so stay tuned for that.
