Socialise ... in a positive and CALM way. Yet another worthwhile contribution from ABC Dogs NZ. Please take a minute to follow their page

This really is our "fault" as a society.❗
We seem to promote play instead of acclimation.
Socialisation is a very warped term.
"Socialisation" really isn't play, play is a separate and important skill BUT if your dog or puppy is actively encouraged to play with every other dog or puppy they encounter...that in itself can be the beginning of a lifetime of reactivity.
I have been criticised for promoting "too much" calmness around other dogs and puppies...."Why can't they show emotions", "Why can't they play"?
Never said they couldn't....however, because of the societal pressure to play with all other dogs and puppies (wherever we take them) we can VERY easily set our dogs up to view all dogs and puppies as a source of constant amusement at the mere glimpse of one, a reason to go to the very extremes of emotions.
They may "dig in" and drag you closer.
The barking, shrieking and spinning can start....for two reasons, the emotional extremes dogs now have attached to other dogs and the frustration because they can't reach that other dog quick enough.

So maybe the term "socialisation" is the issue, because for us it means "socialising".
Acclimation is a far better term.

I've always encouraged anyone getting a puppy around Christmas to wait until a few days after Christmas Day if they can. If puppy is intended as a gift for that special day, give a collar and lead along with a photo of puppy and then come get the puppy a few days later. This AKC article provides good advice for anyone thinking of bringing a dog into their home during the "silly season".

Sending puppies to their new homes is a big undertaking at any time of the year. But while we all agree that puppies should never be given as gifts to othe

Tirlta Wasting Light (O Ch / Aust Ch Tirlta Dartbrook UDX x Tirlta Gem of the South).

Our beloved Indi turned 13 today. From the very last Tirlta litter bred by Noreen Clark, she has been a constant livewire in our lives. She is slowly down and prefers these days to bark at the kong rather than chase it. Her passion for food especially yoghurt is as strong as ever as is her role of being the neighbourhood fun police. She had a decent show career including class Best In Show awards and her pups and great grand pups are reaching amazing heights in a variety of disciplines.

Vital reading

As the great Kiwi saying goes..."Yeah...Nah".✅❌
Expecting that ALL dogs need to accept and play with ALL other dogs is a very fast track to some big issues.
Dogs are allowed their own preferences and forcing dogs to interact...just because they are dogs, can be really damaging and dangerous.
Many dogs have social preferences and that needs to be respected by us. Some dogs really struggle to read other dogs body language and struggle to decipher signals when another dogs body is vastly different to what they are used to.
Pugs are a good example of a body type some dogs struggle to read.
Unfortunately there can also be pressure from others to let their dogs play with yours.... sometimes good judgement is ignored because.... "All dogs should play with other dogs".
No... they don't and they shouldn't if your dog has clear preferences.

"They just weren't socialised enough as puppies"
"They need to be more obedient"
"They just need to play more"
"They need to be more dominant when playing"
"They need to just submit"
No, nope, ...and no again.

Social preferences are also not static.
They can change, so be open to that too.

There is a bit of a myth out there that reactive dogs only belong in the "not social" category. Some reactive dogs can be really social with others, but they could be leash reactive even to dog breeds they may enjoy interacting with off lead.
Just because a dog is reactive it does NOT automatically mean they dislike all other dogs.
Even reactive dogs have (and are allowed) to have their own unique preferences.
