Every horse is an individual, and some learn quicker than others.
However, every horse needs you to be patient, and not to set time limits on when they will learn something.
The more you rush things, the longer it will take you to get the result you're after - so be patient, take as long as the horse needs to understand and you'll be where you want sooner
We all know horses are creatures of habit. Generally, most people have a routine of getting their horse out, riding for a bit, then put the horse away again.
The horse gets used to this routine.
Then comes a competition day (or other events with many breaks during the day) when the horse is expected to be ridden, tied to the float/yarded, then ridden again and so on for the day, and you find the horse is getting more disinterested or switched off as the day goes on.
How do we fix this?
By teaching our horse at home by putting in numerous riding sessions over the course of the day. In other words, breaking the set routine. We want our horse engaged and listening every ride, and they need to learn this at home before heading out to an event.
So, when possible, mix up your routine and teach your horse that the day is not over until it's over.
Training basic exercises is the key to becoming accomplished at advanced exercises.
More advanced work is simply an arrangement of multiple basic training exercises.
So if you're having a problem with a more advanced exercise, it is showing you that you need to re-focus on the basic elements before attempting a more advanced exercise.
