🧄 🍄‍🟫 🥑 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀, 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗼 & 𝗚𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗔𝗙𝗘 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀.

🤯 WOAH! Did you just read correctly? You sure did.

☝🏽 In our community there are misconceptions that have gained some insane traction over time - the most common are that mushrooms, avocados and garlic are toxic to our dogs.

🫴🏽 If you are prepared to have your thoughts challenged, please keep reading.

🧄 Garlic:

☝🏽 The fear of garlic stemmed from a study that still is widely mis-interpreted 24 years ago - it was called "Hematologic changes associated with the appearance of eccentrocytes after intragastric administration of garlic extract to dogs".

📖 The objective of this study was to determine whether dogs given garlic extract developed hemolytic anemia and to establish the hematologic characteristics induced experimentally by intragastric administration of garlic extract. 8 healthy adult mixed-breed dogs were used.

🐕 4 dogs were given 1.25ml of garlic extract/kg of body weight (5g of whole garlic/kg) intragastrically (tubed into the stomach) once a day for 7 days.

⚖️ A clove of garlic weighs around 5g, therefore, for a 20 kilo dog, they SUPER dosed them with the equivalent of around 20 cloves of garlic per day for 7 days. So over the course of 7 days, they fed them 140 cloves of garlic - 𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗺 𝘄𝘁𝗳.

🧄 Now, in NORMAL, not psycho amounts, garlic has some great nutritional benefits.

🥑 Avocado:

👉🏽 In 2012 Proctor & Gamble funded a study to see once and for all if Avocado was safe for dogs or not, this study was called Tolerance and safety of an avocado‐based ingredient for adult dogs.

✅ The study found: Avocado extract was well‐tolerated by adult dogs and resulted in no adverse health effects.

😅 I don’t know where this one came from, maybe because wild mushrooms growing in your backyard are actually toxic to you and I and our dogs. Edible mushrooms like the kind we cook for ourselves have heaps of health benefits.

Hi everyone,

As some of you know we had to make the decision to remove dog daycare from the services we offer. This was a super hard decision and not done without exploring all other possible solutions and opportunities.

As of next week we will only be offering pet sitting services and occasional walking (pending availability), as I have returned to a full time role in retail.

We do have some space available for house visits over the October long weekend, so this is your reminder to get in contact now!

The festive season over December and January is also starting to fill, so please reach out if you require any daily visits for your pets - I’d love to see them all again!

🐩 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸?

🧐 If you have watched the socials lately, you may have seen a video of a woman and a man having an altercation at a dog park. This has caused questions about who is in the right and who is in the wrong.

☝🏽I actually think we have a bigger issue, that with the growing numbers of dog ownership, councils really need to step up and solve.

🐕 If you follow my page, you likely think the dog park (which includes dog off lead areas) are horrible places, filled with out of control dogs and ignorant owners.

💸 With fines being increased to $806.00 for an off leash dog in an on lead area STATE WIDE, those that actually do want to have their dog off lead, have no choice but to try and brave the current off leash dog areas.

➡️ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗯𝗲?

👉🏽 Dog off leash areas are supposed to be a place where dogs can be off lead safely, under effective control - this means they can responds to cues and remain close by their owner. They should be able to interact with other dogs and humans in a polite and safe way.

😳 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆?

👉🏽 A hit or miss mosh pit with overly social dogs that display rude behaviours with little regard for their owners.

🙄 Do you see the issue?

🐩 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸?

👉🏽 I’ve thought about this a lot. Because the ideal scenario would be that dogs in a dog park would care little about other dogs and more about engaging with their owner - therefore there would be a lot more dog neutral dogs which would mean dog selective dogs wouldn’t have to worry about over the top interactions.

☝🏽 However, this will never happen, because most owners have no idea what dog neutral means - they think every dog should be buddies and play together.

⚠️ To be in a dog park your dog really has to be completely dog neutral, patient and understanding of rude dogs. They have to be tolerant, non confrontational, and have a high level of impulse control and obedience to be able to disengage and leave if required.

😬 Pretty wild hey. Can you ever see the average dog owner putting the work in to get their dogs here?

‼️ I think council need to set up off lead areas that members of the public can pay to use solo - so the people that want to allow off lead freedom, can do so legally and without the anxiety of dog fights and drama. Or perhaps council need to moderate dog parks like a school yard? Maybe if more people were accountable for their dog’s rude behaviour, more education can be created with identifying inappropriate dog behaviour.

🧐 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆?

☝🏽 I don’t want to be doing the wrong thing and I certainly can’t afford $806 fines per dog. So I find the below strategy works well:

✅ Opt for times where the dog park is empty.

✅ Choose a place that isn’t fenced as the really out of control dogs tend to not be able to go there.

✅ Have multiple entry and exit strategies.

✅ Know your local community and the dogs - do some reconnaissance if you have to so you know when the sh*tty dogs and owners are coming.

📖 Quick story - the other day this exact thing happened. I was in the dog park with one other really polite senior dog, I saw a local over social dog approaching that is SUPER rude and the owner is so clueless. I said to the senior dog guy - “hey that dog is not good - we are leaving bye”, we got out, and the senior dog guy stayed. Just as I predicted the menace dog was obnoxious and rude and there was an altercation. Thankfully, we were OUT OF THERE! The senior dog guy left and caught up to me and said thanks for that warning, next time I need to leave more quickly. My reconnaissance paid off for my dogs.

✅ Take reinforcements like food and toys.

✅ Wear a GoPro if you need to capture interactions - LOL I love this and if you think that viral video going around is good, boy do I have some great content.

🤠 It’s a wild world out there people, keep your dog safe and if in doubt, don’t go off lead and practice engagement instead. Do you have any other suggestions?
