💫Patient of the week💫
Meet Diesel, the 18 year old Domestic Short hair. She presented to the clinic 2 months ago when her owner was concerned that Diesel was not her usual sprightly self. Following a full work-up with bloods, X-rays and abdominal ultrasound we diagnosed her with a bleeding splenic tumour. We performed surgery on Diesel that afternoon and removed her spleen and tumour. Histopathology identified the tumour as a Haemagiosarcoma, a rare form of malignant cancer in cats.
After Diesel made an excellent recovery from her surgery, especially for such an old girl, her owner was committed to keeping her cancer-free and comfortable for as long as possible.
We initiated a chemotherapy protocol known as metronomic chemotherapy. Metronomic chemotherapy is a milder, yet as effective form of chemo delivered as an oral drug by owners in the comfort of their homes. This treatment plan has allowed Diesel to remain happy and comfortable without the stress and side effects often experienced with in-hospital chemotherapy!

Diesel is a true testament to how well our pets can tolerate intensive therapies!

With Paralysis tick season in full swing, we would like to share one of our more unusual cases!
This is Pluto, the Silkie chicken. Her owners discovered her collapsed in the yard the day before. Suspecting heat-stroke they nursed her at home, but soon discovered something more sinister. She had a huge paralysis tick attached to her eye! Usually, birds do not suffer from tick paralysis as their keen eyes and beaks make short work of them, but if the tick attaches in an area such as the head, the outcome could be bad. Pluto received a dose of tick anti-serum and intravenous fluids while being kept comfortable in an oxygen cage and went home to make a successful recovery.
This is a timely reminder to PLEASE make sure your pets are up to date with their tick preventatives. Feel free to contact the clinic if you have any questions regarding tick preventatives.

Meet Charlie 🐾

Charlie was recently diagnosed with a locally aggressive tumor on her lower jaw. The initial histopathology revealed that it was a Plasmacytoma, a common oral tumour in dogs that can locally invade adjacent tissues and bone.

Charlie's owners came to see Dr. Chris to discuss treatment options and it was decided that the best approach to cure her tumour would be to perform a surgery called a Rostral Hemi-Mandibulectomy.

The surgery involves amputating the front part of the lower jaw containing the tumour and as terrifying as that sounds Charlie sailed through the surgery and recovery period like a champion!

We are always amazed at just how well pet's recover and Charlie is back to living her best life with her Mum and Dad ❤️

Meet Mr. Doggy the Labrador!

Mr. Doggy has an important message to all our pet parents who live on acreage and large properties - be aware of snakes this spring and summer!! 🐍

Mr. Doggy had been playing in his favourite dam when he encountered a deadly Red bellied Blacksnake. Initially he showed virtually no symptoms, but the following day he presented with dark discoloured urine and muscle stiffness. The venom was causing red blood cell destruction and he became anaemic - this delayed onset of symptoms is not uncommon in Blacksnae envenomations. We promptly administered 2 vials of antivenom (which we always have on hand) while monitoring him very closely ❤️‍🩹

Mr. Doggy continued his hospitalisation with our colleagues at the Animal Emergency Service and got discharged home a few days later 🫶🏼

Any snake interaction or suspected snake bite requires immediate veterinary attention. Our in-house blood machines are capable of confirming snake bites and we always have antivenom available 🐾

Poppy the two and a half year old boxer received an elective cesarean with Dr. Chris 🐶

Poppy’s pregnancy was confirmed via ultrasound at four weeks post mating and it was discovered that Poppy only had one puppy!

Poppy later received a pregnancy x-ray (fifty five days post-mating) to confirm she definitely only had one puppy. Refer to the second image to view the pregnancy x-ray.

Poppy’s progesterone levels were closely monitored throughout her pregnancy. Her puppy was delivered via cesarean by Dr. Chris on day sixty two of her pregnancy.

We are happy to report that both Poppy and her puppy are doing very well at home 🥰

Looking at the after photo you can see that Lola’s teeth are lovely and clean - plaque and tartar free! A nice clean slate for Lola’s owners to resume at home dental care.
