Greencross Fairy Meadow and The Animal Referral Hospital Wollongong are hosting induction days for General Practice and Emergency Vets out there looking to try out a shift working at our hospital! We offer great flexibility in our shifts and work on a roster that accommodates your needs too, including those interested in working across both GP and Emergency.

These paid induction shifts will be an introduction into our hospital and include tours of the hospital, lunch, and a meet and greet with our teams, to see if this is somewhere you'd like to work.

Dates available in August are: Saturday 17th, Sunday 18th, Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th

Chickens have some pretty clever ways of beating the winter chill, but they may still need your help. Like all birds, chickens use their feathers for insulation by fluffing them up and trapping the air. But for the times when nature is hard to predict, good pet care involves providing appropriate refuge.

❄️Insulation❄️
In cold parts of Australia, you could insulate your chicken coop with tree branches, cardboard, or straw. Care should be taken if hay or straw is used for insulation, as these can become infested with mold and vermin and carry chicken parasites. Also, remember to keep the insulation tidy. Keeping the coop clean and dry is essential as most bacteria, fungi, and parasites thrive in warm, moist environments.

☀️Warmer climates☀️
If you live in one of the warmer Australian states then you probably won’t need to install insulation in your chicken coop at all. Open, ventilated coops are more important. Learn more tips on coop setup on our website, or alternatively, visit your local Greencross Vets for expert advice.

Winter is here! We feel it's going to be a super cold one, and chances are if you are feeling cold your furry friend is too.

Here are some ways to keep your pet warm in the Winter:

💚Keep your pet inside
💚Provide a warm, soft, elevated bed
💚Warm coats are great for pets that are senior, small or have thin coats
💚Move your guinea pigs hutch inside the house or garage
💚Provide extra straw and hay so small pets can burrow and hide
💚Keep all bedding dry
💚Wrap a loose blanket over your pet, but don’t tuck them in. They still need to be able to move away from it if they overheat
💚Walk your furry friend during the day when it’s not as cold

Karl completed a Bachelor of Animal Science at the University College of Dublin in 2014. He moved to Budapest, Hungary to complete a postgraduate degree in Veterinary Medicine.

Emergency and Specialty Vets are sounding the alarm about the rise in paralysis ticks affecting our pets. 🐾 With the unseasonal warmth lingering into autumn and rain, the conditions are ripe for these dangerous pests.
At Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) Gosford, several beloved pets have tragically lost their lives due to severe tick paralysis. Dr. Natashia Evans, an Emergency and Critical Care Specialist at ARH Gosford, emphasises the importance of year-round parasite prevention, even as we transition into winter.

Skipping prevention can lead to devastating consequences.
Even a delay of just one or two days can put your pet at risk. Set reminders, and if in doubt, administer prevention a couple of days early.

Pet owners are urged to perform daily tick checks, as early detection can save lives.

💚 As winter sets in and the temperature drops, vets often see an increase in arthritis cases in both young and old animals. Sadly, the majority of these pets go undiagnosed and untreated as their owners don’t understand the reality of this condition. However, pets experience real pain with arthritis, comparable to the pain experienced by humans with this disease.

We know spring can bring lots of nasties around our pets like ticks, which can be fatal without prevention and treatment, so we are urgently warning of a serious risk to pets as tick anti-toxin serum is out of stock nationally, with limited supplies left in hospitals and stocks unlikely to replenish for another two weeks.
As a pet parent please ensure your pet is up to date with tick prevention today. The tick season is well underway with large numbers of paralysis tick cases presenting to vet clinics due to the wet and warm weather.
Ticks are prevalent in bushy coastal areas which makes the Illawarra a perfect breeding ground for paralysis ticks.
If you think your pet may have ticks, this is an emergency and veterinary attention is required immediately.

Here at Greencross Vets we are always looking to learn more to better help our client's and their pets.

Dr Ashley Sykes (pictured on the left of this photo) is known as our 'rabbit vet' as he enjoys treating rabbits a lot. Dr Sykes held a combined training session with our Illawarra clinics with several of our Vets and Nurses attending to ensure we can learn as much about helping these little pocket pets as we can 🐰

When you come into our clinic you will often see how busy we as we hustle and bustle around the clinic.

Recently, a Mum of one of our vet nurses (who is currently on maternity leave) dropped us in a cake 'just because' and I tell you what, it was certainly appreciated. Our Fairy Meadow team all enjoyed a slice with a cup of tea and got us through our day 😃🍰

Greencross Fairy Meadow will open on Good Friday, Easter Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. We will be open from 8am - 4pm every day and working alongside the Animal Referral Hospital team who will be available 24/7 throughout the long weekend.

🦷Ashley the cat had a secret and you won't believe what it was🦷

Ashely the gorgeous Burmese was booked in for a grade 2 routine dental at our Fairy Meadow clinic on 3/3/22 which included xrays. When Ashley was sedated vet Lauren found something very unusual inside her mouth and xrays showed us just how interesting it was.

Ashley had a condition called 'tooth gemination' of one of her lower teeth which means that one tooth had started to split in two (when she was a kitten) however had still stayed fused together. You can see in the xray that the tooth looks like it has 3 roots!

The tooth itself doesn't seem to have caused Ashley any issues so it was left as it was with a simple scale and polish around it but it was very interesting to see

🐁CUTEST PATIENT OF THE DAY IS REMI🐁

Handsome Remi the rat came to see us at our Fairy Meadow clinic last Friday for his desexing procedure. He was a star patient and the nurses loved giving him plenty of cuddles whilst he spent the day with us.

Remi has recovered well and returned home the same afternoon. He really was a delight and we look forward to seeing him in the future for his regular checkups.
