Ten Years. One Degree. A Thousand Lessons.

Last week, I finally graduated with distinction from the Bachelor of Equine Science at Charles Sturt University. This was a degree I started over a decade ago.

It’s taken me ten years, two kids, raging ADHD, a business, grief, burnout, rebuilding, starting over (more than once), and a whole lot of late nights to get here.

There were so many times I could have quit, but what kept me going wasn’t motivation or discipline. It was my Why. It was my Big Picture Vision.

The same clarity I now help my business coaching clients uncover, because when things get hard (and they will), your Why becomes your anchor. And your Big Picture Vision becomes your fuel.

If I’ve learned anything through it all, it’s this:
Clarity will carry you further than hustle ever will.

Thank you to everyone who has supported me, especially those who’ve walked beside me on the hard days. This one means more than I can say.

P.S. If you’ve been feeling lost in your business, stuck under horses, or wondering what’s next, Beyond the Hoof: The Fast-Track Coaching Program is open for enrolment. You’ll find clarity, support, and your next step forward. Just message me or check the link in my bio.

As much as I’d love everything to be in my control… it’s not.

There are so many factors that go into a healthy hoof—things we can influence and things as a hoof care practitioner I simply can’t. I often find myself in conversations with colleagues about the horses that challenge us the most. More often than not, the struggles aren’t just about trimming or shoeing technique; they stem from compensation patterns, or long-standing imbalances that are beyond what we can change with a rasp or a shoe.

And hooves don’t exist in isolation. The entire body is connected.

Proprioception—the horse’s ability to know where it is in space. When one part is compromised, the rest must adapt.

🔹 Hoofcare: The feet are the foundation that everything else is stacked on. A compromised foundation affects the entire structure above it.

🔹 Bodywork: We need to give the body as many opportunities as possible to compensate. Restrictions in one area lead to compensations elsewhere, impacting movement and balance.

🔹 Dentistry: The brain sits on the shelf that is produced by the teeth. A horse’s dental alignment affects jaw mobility, posture, and neural input.

As Dr. Audrey DeClue puts it, “The foot only grows dependent on how the body controls the limb to land. The hoof only grows evenly if there is even pressure.” Hoof growth is a reflection of how the entire limb moves and bears weight, and the health of the body and limb attached to the hoof.

And as Tami Elkayam says, “Feet are an expression of the motion possibilities of the limb above. At some point, the foot shape will lock the motion possibilities of the limb above.” Over time, compensatory movement patterns can restrict what we are able to achieve in the feet if we aren’t being proactive.

At the end of the day, we only have an influence over the horse in front of us for a short period of time each cycle—often just 30 to 60 minutes. In a perfect world, we’d spend longer assessing a horse (statically and dynamically) and documenting progress than actually working on them. But that requires access to facilities where we could slow-motion video, analyze movement in real time, and (dare I say it) actually be paid for that time.

But we work with what we have, doing the best we can with the small window of opportunity we get. Because while we can’t control everything, we can make the most of what we have.

And then we add stress and inflammation into the mix. Whenever we have inflammation present it limits the ability of the body to function and heal. Instead of working with the body’s natural mechanics, we create further restrictions, pain, and imbalance.

A truly holistic approach means looking at the bigger picture, recognising these connections, and working to support the horse as a whole.

🐴 get on track - design, build, play

Grass Free vs m o s t l y grass free

When running a track system, there are monumental differences between grass tracks, mostly grass free tracks and grass FREE tracks.

Ultimately you need to choose what’s right for you, but don’t be lulled into thinking they always have equal outcomes. The following is but one example to highlight the impact of short stressed grass on super sensitive horses (spoiler, they ALL get affected, just some get sore and cost you money sooner!)

This is (typically) a grass FREE track, however as Spring sprung, availability to green ‘pick’ along the edges of the track increased. Life was busy and the task of dealing with the track’s grassy edges kept getting bumped for life’s other pressing priorities.

One horse in particular (out of 5 in the herd) is very sensitive, metabolically speaking. As the weeks went by, said Labrador’s crest began to increase as did fat deposits in all the typical places (behind the shoulder, back, rump, etc.). Not overnight, but incrementally.
n o t h i n g else in diet nor lifestyle changed.

Preferably action would have been taken sooner, however even for horses grazing in paddocks, know that these are your e a r l y w a r n i n g signs. This is long before rings or separation show in the hooves or the crest turns hard or the horse becomes ‘footy’. I say long before, but things can escalate quickly if weather and trimming issues work against you. Why wait until there is a serious problem?

A rotary hoe (just to ‘scritch’ up the surface) was used along the edges or any other problem area on the track. Over the next couple of weeks Mr. Senstive Labrador’s extra weight dropped off and life on the track returned to normal, sans the grassy nibbles.

We find a rotary hoe behind our small tractor works best (you can get motor driven ones you can walk behind). Harrows can also be used, as can black plastic to solarise and other creative methods. Some people plant out with trees and shrubs to shade out and at least minimise grass growth, wherever possible. We don’t advocate spraying, as this comes with toxicity issues (horse & land). Sometimes making your track smaller can help you manage it easier.

So wonderful to have Nathan and Nadine from Innate Equine here last weekend, with their new rehab horse Maggie. They brought her all the way up from Gippsland to collaborate with me to help her.

Ivy from Harmonious Hoof Care was another essential member of the team.

I'm feeling so fulfilled after this weekend, learning, teaching, and helping old friends and new.

Plus, Maggie has the most amazing moustache, which was the cherry on top 🥰
