Osteoarthritis, also known as arthritis, can be tricky to pick in its early stages.
Changes in the joint aren't yet visible and, with four legs, our dogs can shift their weight and posture to cope with pain.

We often hear owners say, "he's just slowing down," or "he's just a bit stiff." Many don't notice that their dog is not as willing to exercise and play as he once was, as the change is so gradual. Unfortunately, by the time it becomes obvious, the arthritis is quite advanced and causing considerable pain.

Keep an eye on your young dog too, as they can also suffer from arthritis.

Call us if you notice any of these symptoms - the pain of arthritis can be treated!

🐾 Stiffness when getting out of bed in the morning (yes, just like us humans!)
🐾 Limping or stiffness after a walk or exercise
🐾 Licking or gnawing at joints or paws
Puffy joints
🐾 Abnormal gait
🐾 Reluctance to walk upstairs or jump
🐾 Reluctance to play and run
🐾 Change in behaviour such as aggression
🐾 Postural change or muscle wastage

🔹🔹🔹Fun Fact Friday! 🔹🔹🔹

Dogs are known for their keen sense of hearing. Their hearing is far more acute and sensitive than ours, in fact, they can register sounds of 35,000 vibrations a second, compared to a human who can register sounds of 20,000 vibrations a second.

Keep this in mind next time there’s a loud thunder storm or your throwing a big party, our pups will be much more sensitive to this so always give them a safe space they can hide in with some barrier to the noise.

June is National Microchipping Month!

It comes at an appropriate time with the recent wild weather that has hit Perth, we have had an alarming number of calls and enquiries of lost pets… most of these pets ARE microchipped, however a LOT of them are either unregistered or not upto date with current contact and owner details. This means there is no way for these lost pets to find their way home.

We routinely scan your pets everytime they come into clinic to ensure their microchip is registered, however if you have recently moved house, phone number or even ownership of the pet you can ask us to check if the microchip details are upto date and correct.

Stop into the clinic for some pats, treats and microchip check this month!

REFERRAL
We see anxiety in dogs for all kinds of reasons: COVID puppies and rescues with poor socialisation, past trauma, genetics, and sometimes (just like humans) they are naturally anxious.

As a General Practice Veterinary Clinic we can provide you with information on multiple approaches that can help your anxious pup, but in some cases - in order to give them the best chance at becoming more confident dogs living a more relaxed life – the best approach is referral onto a Veterinary Behaviorist.

A Veterinary Behaviorist is a Veterinarian who has further qualifications in animal behaviour and many see these patients exclusively. They see and treat a wide range of conditions, including anxiety, interdog reactivity, resource guarding and compulsive behaviours such as tail chasing. Behaviorists often take a holistic approach that incorporates a combination of positive training methods, medications, relationship building and environmental modification to help get your pet to a better place. If you would like more information about this, please get in touch.

Please be aware that the dog training industry is unregulated in Australia, so you can often find trainers marketing themselves “behaviourists”. Veterinary Behaviorists do work closely with some highly skilled trainers, but it is important when looking for the best person to help your anxious dog that you reach out to a qualified Veterinary Behaviorist first. They will connect you with an appropriate trainer for your pet’s condition if it will be beneficial.

MEDICATION
“I don’t want to medicate my dog for a nail trim.” We hear this all the time.

Think about this scenario…what’s you biggest fear? Heights? Snakes? Spiders?

If you were told stand on top of the harbour bridge, get locked in a room full of snakes or sit in a bathtub full of spiders how would you feel?
What if you had two choices:
A) Have some medical assistance to help calm the nerves while you did this
B) Complete this task cold turkey
What would YOU choose?

When we suggest medication for your dog when they are particularly nervous, it’s not because we want to “drug them” - we want to reduce their anxiety and help them relax during a stressful event. Additionally, using these types of medications will help to prevent the stressful event from causing ongoing trauma or fear for repeat visits to the vet.

There’s often negative thoughts out there surrounding medicating your anxious dog, but it’s good to chat to your vet about the hows and whys regarding this so you can get a full understanding of how it benefits your dog and their experience, both in the moment and long term.

HAPPY VISITS
Does your dog’s anxiety arise during vet visits? A lot of dogs only visit the vet when they are feeling sick or injured, this means extensive examination, temperate, injections and lots more…. So when they come for their general vaccination or nail clip they think it’s a scary place. We want to make sure your dog loves us as much as we love them, one way of doing this is by bringing your dog in once a week, once a fortnight or even once a month (whatever works with your schedule) for a “Happy Visit”.

This means, pop in, say hi, get lots of treats, cuddles (if that’s not too scary), step on the scales, sniff the place out, then leave! Nothing Scary, just the fun stuff! If that’s too overwhelming to start, we have a beautiful patio the nurses will happily meet your dog out there to give them treats! Baby steps with these nervous dogs is the way forward.

There’s no charge for Happy Visits, we just want to make sure your dog has the least stressful experience visiting us when they do need a consult!

ADAPTIL
ADAPTIL is a product that can by applied to your dog’s life in a variety of different forms, from a diffuser in the house, collar or sprayed on bandana or bedding for specific situations. ADAPTIL replicates the pheromones that mother dogs use to communicate with their puppies, this provides comfort and security to dogs of all ages. This helps both dogs feel reassured in challenging situations, reducing signs of stress and anxiety. ADAPTIL Junior has proven benefits to help your new puppy settle into their new home and the big wide world, by placing the collar on your new puppy from the moment you bring them into you lives, you are setting them up to take on the world, allowing them to absorb and retain everything they learn in puppy school more so than if they weren’t wearing one.

To discuss the best ADAPTIL option for your dog, chat to the team about the specific anxiety issues your dog has so we can help you decide.

ENRICHMENT

Mental enrichment plays a huge part in helping anxiety in our dogs.

It allows them to engage in natural behaviours, builds confidence, relieves boredom and gives them a sense of accomplishment. It can also curb feelings of anxiety and frustration.

Researching your dogs breed and natural behaviours then incorporating specific mental stimulation tailored to your dogs breed is wonderful way to fulfill their instincts, however all dogs love sniffing, licking and chewing so enrichment around food is always a fantastic go to!

Snuffle mats, scatter feeding, puzzle toys, licki mats, frozen kongs and mental training games will get your pup using their brain in a way that helps them focus and reduces feelings of anxiety. Even something as simple as switching up your usual route for your daily walk will provide new enrichment for your dog!

Pop into the clinic to say hi and chat to one of our friendly nurses about ideas for your dog!

Comment or drop a photo below of how you provide your dog with enrichment!

🔈PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT 🔈

If your children are returning home missing socks, it may be due to leaving them in the park…

Lonely socks in the park sometimes appear as tasty snacks to some of our local dogs.

Socks can cause serious issues when ingested, please encourage your children to place their socks in their bag when removing them from their feet, saving you money not needing to buy new socks and saving local dogs from unwanted vet visits.

Margot was not feeling so great after her visit to the park which resulted in coming in to us to vomit up the latest pair of socks that had been left lying around.

What lies beneath…

Dental health is just as important in our furry friends as it is for ourselves! There are many cases where a tooth can look healthy from above, but without the use of dental xrays we are unable to see what is happening beneath the gum line.

Penny came to us for a routine scale and polish. When we reviewed her xrays we discovered she had a congenital malformation affecting two of her molar teeth. Both molars had tooth root abscesses and required extraction. Without the use of dental xrays we would not have found this pathology which would still be causing Penny pain.

Fremantle Animal Hospital now includes dental xrays in all of our dental procedures to ensure your pet is getting the best quility of care!

Call the clininc on 6223 0999 to book in you pet for a dental check.

AWARENESS POST

Marley came to us earlier this week after her morning adventure at the beach (where she had scavenged something she shouldn’t), she returned home not quite herself. Marley was wobbly, swaying, extra sensitive and skittish. Her owners brought her in and after an initial exam Dr Jaqueline quickly decided that we needed to run a drug test. It turns out, Marley’s self-found morning tea was the faeces of a human who had ma*****na in their system. Marley had THC toxicity.

When taking your pets out off lead, to the park or to the beach please be hyper aware of what they put into their mouths, train them to “leave it” or if they are known scavengers invest in a scavenge preventing muzzle for their safety.

Signs of THC toxicity in pets include, incoordination, hypersensitivity to sounds, motion touch and light, dilated pupils, hyper salivation and urinary incontinence. If you are concerned your pet has ingested or inhaled something they shouldn’t have, contact your vet immediately.

Marley has recovered nicely with lots of TLC after her THC mishap.
