We’ll just leave this here as a reminder that if the lameness hasn’t responded to a short penicillin course it’s not footrot and more than likely something else is going on! And yes Stu left the box of gloves to restock the ute back at the surgery! 🙈🤷♀️🤢
I should know by now that if I decide the night before that the weather is finally too cold and windy for the 5am jog, and that a very rare nice warm sleep is in order, heifers will decide it is the perfect calving time 🤷♀️🤷♀️ 🥶🥶💨.
And really a live calving for lovely long term clients under the full moon at 5am beats a sleep in any day! 🐮💕
Thank you as well to Freedom Fuels Laidley because although I grabbed spinal needles, cesarean gear (fortunately not needed) and coffee I forgot my wallet for much needed fuel 🤦♀️😬
On a side note how amazing are the string of spaceX satellites going over at 5am this week, not going to lie when I first saw them and had no idea what they were my initial thought was “But it’s the wrong time of year for Santa and his reindeer 🎅🙈🛰”

Todays highlight… one of my favourite cow surgeries 🐂💕🔪
“Stringhalt / upward fixation of the patellar” in both hind limbs.
Cow (&horse) knees/ stifles have 3 ligaments, one of these ligaments hooks onto the kneecap to help lock the limb joints in extension… this enables cows and horses to sleep standing up 💤
If this inside ligament fails to unhook from the kneecap then the leg is locked straight until it unhooks..often with a jerk. This may start off as an intermittent problem but generally progresses until one or both of the hind limbs are almost permanently locked.
➡️ Solution: Cut the inside ligament… simple!! 🔪😊
Done standing in the crush under light sedation and local block.
The result.. an immediate, permanent fix!! And one much happier cow 😊😊😊🐂💕

GOAT WORM WARNING
This beautiful weather and grass has set up the perfect conditions for severe Barbers pole 💈🪱investations.
Please do not rely on ivermectin or panacur drenches THEY DO NOT WORK!!
All goats eyelids 👁should be FAMCHA scored regularly to identify drench issues.
Decreasing the worms in the environment is key and can be aided by:
🌱Paddock rotation
🪱Bioworma (supply issue at present)
💈Faecal egg counts
👁FAMCHA scoring to ID less resilient individuals.

⚠️ 3 day Warning ⚠️
3 day is spreading like wildfire throughout the valley! ☔️🦠🐮 This year in particular is really bad, especially in the well conditioned animals 🐂
EARLY DETECTION and treatment is key! Unfortunately we have had multiple deaths already this season….
We strongly suggest having a bottle of Meloxicam** ready to go! 💉 🐮🐮
** We can only dispense Meloxicam if we have been out to your property in the last 6 months 👩⚕️ 👨⚕️

“Kangaroo gait” 🦘🐑🇦🇺
Unusual case of the month..a polyneuropathy (many dysfunctional nerves) causing muscle weakness seen in lactating ewes 2-3 weeks after lambing. Cause unknown.. recovery once the lamb (s) are weaned. Early weaning is recommended if symptoms are severe. We’ve decided to leave the lamb on this ewe as her symptoms are only bad when stressed.
🏆Top marks to vet student Shauna @__shaunaa who remembered the gait from a lecture video 🎥 I also remembered the gait from a FB sheep page!
It did however take us awhile to get the name… we went through “Aussie hopping”, “bunny hopping” and “jumping” first!! 😂 #cantgetmoreaussiethanthat🦘🐑🇦🇺 #rarecaseoftheweek #ithoughtstudentssleptinlectures #topmarksforshauna #shaunawewillmissyou 🥲 #cowdr🐑🦘
⭐️🐄 💫 Star Gazing in a young feedlot steer.
Nice early spot by the owner 🙌
Polioencephalomalacia (brain swelling) due to decreased thiamine production in the rumen is the most likely cause due to the high carbohydrate feedlot diet 🌾🌾
Other possible candidates include sulphur toxicity, salt toxicity, hypo magnesium or lead toxicity.
Easy successful treatment when caught early: Vitamin B (thiamine) and steroid injections 💉
In more severe cases: blindness, staggering and ☠️

Guess the toxicity??☠️🤒🐂🐮
Clue we’ve had bits of rain and everywhere has greened up a little.
...And bonus points for another cattle problem that can cause a similar head shake.
