UQ SAMS

UQ SAMS UQ Veterinary Student Association’s Small Animal Medicine & Surgery Special Interest Group.

Helping veterinary / tech students further their skills and find their love for small animal medicine and surgery. Our aims include:

• To provide students with the opportunity to practice and build on clinical skills essential for practice prior to graduating as veterinary surgeons

• To provide students with the chance to learn about the different specialties within small animal medicine and sur

gery and career pathways within these specialties

• To provide students with the opportunity to network with various specialists and surgeons within the field of small animal medicine and surgery to aid in the transition from university to practicing as veterinary surgeons in this particular field

We aim to achieve the above by:
• Running workshops.
• Holding seminars.
• Having lunchtime lectures and inviting veterinary specialists and surgeons from various fields of small animal medicine and surgery.
• Fostering relationships between students interested in this field of veterinary science and various veterinary surgeries/clinics by providing the opportunity to network at workshops/seminars/lectures.
• Introducing students to staff that we have here at UQ who are involved in small animal medicine and surgery who can aid in achieving the above aims.

We’re grateful to Moira from Ceva for delivering an engaging and informative talk on pheromone-based behaviour solutions for stress and anxiety in dogs and cats.

From easing anxiety during vet visits and travel, to managing multi-pet households, we explored practical, evidence-based strategies to support animal welfare and strengthen the human-animal bond.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for last evening’s talk on Avoiding Desexing Complications!

We are grateful to Dr Abbie for sharing her insights on different complications in desexing surgery, including their causes, diagnostic approaches, treatments and preventions.🩺We also learnt about the option to handle haemorrhage intraoperatively using autotransfusion. It was great to reflect on the strategies to cope with the emotions and stress regarding surgeries and their possible complications.🫶🏻

We hope you enjoyed the evening and picked up some technical and soft skills to manage similar challenges in our future careers.

Thank you for your engagement and enthusiastic questions. And last but not least, thank you to our sponsors for supporting our events and learnings.

Hope to see you all again in our next events!💙💛

What an incredible turnout for our first event of 2025!

We were absolutely blown away by the attendance—more than double the RSVPs! Thank you all for making it such a success. 💙

A special thank you to Dr. Michael O’Donoghue from Pets and People for his insightful lecture. Dr. O’Donoghue delved into the euthanasia process, the importance of effective client communication, what to do when it goes wrong, and strategies for coping with grief. 🪽

His expertise provided us with valuable tools to help support our future clients through one of the most difficult times. 💛

Thank you again for being a part of this event—we’re excited to see you all at our next one! 🩺
