❌ MYTH BUSTER: A WAGGING TAIL IS A HAPPY TAIL ❌
Whilst there is some level of truth to that statement, it is a little bit more complicated than that. A wagging tail is NOT always a happy tail.
When interpreting our dogs behaviour, specifically when looking at their tail, we need to look at more than just the movement (or "wagging") but also the position, the height and the speed at which their tail is moving. Taking note of these gives us a much better understanding of how our dogs are feeling or what they might be experiencing.
A wagging tail typically suggests that a dog is are willing to engage in an interaction but that doesn't mean it will always be good... It is important to acknowledge ALL signs that our dogs show us when we are interpreting their behaviour, not just one part of their body... Is their body tense and stiff? Or are the wiggly and relaxed? Is their mouth softly open? Or is their jaw closed and tense? Our dogs tell us a great deal of information with their whole body! (Note: breeds naturally present their tails slightly different based on their shape and size. It is important to know what is "normal" for your dog).
