Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

A little breed history in the USA

Rajah’s Fabulous ’50s

Here’s a classic Evelyn Shafer portrait that hasn’t seen the light of day for many years: It’s Mr. and Mrs. Walter H. Weinstein’s Bullmastiff Ch. Twit-Lee’s Rajah, who dominated breed rings in the 1950s. Rajah was Best Bullmastiff at Westminster for five consecutive years (’54–’58).

From the July 1956 Gazette Bullmastiff Club of America column: “At a recent meeting of the Club’s trophy committee, it was unanimously decided to award the LeTasyll Trophy [for the year 1955], presented to us by the Southern Bull-Mastiff Society of England for annual award to the most outstanding American Bull-Mastiff, to Walter Weinstein’s Rajah (Ch. Twit-Lee’s Rajah).

“This is the second year that Rajah has won the trophy. The committee decided that it is not only his outstanding show wins, in breed and groups, that entitle Rajah and his owners to honor, but also the fact that as a resident of New York City he has done so much to win recognition for our breed, and to disprove the theory that Bull-Mastiffs are country dogs only.

“Our sincere congratulations to Rajah and his owners; may they long continue both their excellent show records, and the daily five-mile trots through the city which keep both Rajah and his popular owners in such glowing condition.”

A year later, Rajah would win his third consecutive LeTasyll Cup.

Yes, we need to be fully aware of ALL the pros and cons in regards to taking dogs to dog parks. Remember, many dogs that go to these parks are either antisocial, or don't know how to socialise correctly. At many of these parks, many owners are not supervising and controlling their dogs behaviour, due in part not fully understanding what correct social interaction is. I also have some issues with many of the dog daycares here in HCMC. Many are operated by people and staff with little to absolutely no understanding of dog behaviour and social interaction. It's just a good way to make money. I have had to suggest to a number of my clients that they need to stop taking their dog to these parks and facilities, as that is the major cause for their dogs behavioural issues. Sure, I agree, many dogs that go to these dog parks and daycares are very social, however many are not.

Also a major issue is people taking their young puppies to these parks to "learn" how to socialise with other dogs. This is not the place to teach your dog to socialise correctly.

Though it may seem like a fun thing for kids, dogs are NOT meant to sit on. EVER!!! Please do not ever encourage a child to sit or step up on a dog. This can cause pain, fear and conflict. All can increase the chances of a dog bite.

Is your dog “tolerating” what is happening in a situation? Or is the dog really telling them they're uncomfortable and want this to stop? We encourage families to observe their dog's body language so that they can understand what their dog is telling them.

How do I know what to look for if they’re uncomfortable?
❗Half moon eyes, your dog is leaning their body away from what is going on,
❗Yawning when they aren’t tired
❗lip licking

There are many body language signals that dogs display to us if they are uncomfortable, and even if they are enjoying something. Dogs use their bodies to communicate discomfort, stress and joy. Maybe they are happy and content and come over to you while you are holding your baby and get some pets, or they are happily wagging their tail with a loose body.

Recognizing how your dog uses their body to communicate is an important way to build and strengthen bonds.

One of the worst problems our larger breed's deal with in public places !
17/10/2021

One of the worst problems our larger breed's deal with in public places !

Just need to get something off my chest....

I love dogs, I do, and I'm lucky enough to have made a career out of working with dogs. The recent increase in dog numbers means there are more people than ever enjoying the company of dogs, but also more dogs than ever are out and about in public places. Some of the behaviour I am witnessing by some dog owners is driving me more than a little crazy.

PLEASE PUT YOUR DOG ON A LEAD. Why has this become so difficult?
This includes cafes, walking on the footpath and at parks that are not designated off-leash. It is for your dog's safety, as well as the safety of other dogs and people. It has become impossible for me to walk around my local area without meeting at least 3 off-leash dogs each time, and cafes seem to attract off-leash dogs.
I don't understand it - your dog may be friendly, but how do you know how the dog they run up to will react? And why is it OK for your dog to be annoying to others? I've witnessed some dangerous things with fights, knocked-down tables, terrified kids and boiling coffee going all directions.

YOUR DOG DOESN'T HAVE TO “SAY HELLO" What if the other dog (or owner) doesn't want to "say hello" back?
"My dog just wants to say hello" is usually the excuse people give when their dog has no recall, but why would you let your dog jump in the face of a dog on a lead that you don't know? It can go pear-shaped VERY quickly, and I have witnessed some dreadful dog fights as a result of this. Please work on your recall or don't let them off the lead. I just want to walk Chilli in peace.

Finally, about the current POODEMIC - yes, dog poo is unpleasant, but you need to pick it up!
If your dog does a poo on a footpath at night, it might be a shock to learn that you still need to pick it up, even if there were no witnesses! I know it's hard to get your head around, but I'm getting sick of giant piles of poo on the footpath waiting in the morning!

Rant over, thanks for listening….. and of course, I know that most people do the right thing! xx
