Hey Party Peeps and Pooches!

So tonight we say goodbye to 2016 and welcome a brand New Year: 2017!

Whilst fireworks are an exciting and visually spectacular event for us humans, they can be super scary for our animal companions.

•Some hot tips to keep your beloved safe•
Keep them safely indoors.
Pop a radio on with classical music.
Provide them with distractions; either in the form of toys or bones (under supervision).
Make sure they're wearing their council registration tag and a name tag with at least one contact number.
Provide them with water (as always duh!)

•Heaven forbid your beloved escapes, what do you do?•
Don't panic!
Call your Council or Municipality for the area in which your dog escaped (see list below).
Select the 'After Hours' option from the automated menu.
Give as many details as you can including microchip number, council reg number, colour of collar etc.
Be kind to the person on the other end of the phone; they will be inundated tonight and are working whilst everyone else is partying!
If your dog still hasn't shown up by the next day physically visit pounds as sometimes errors in processing can occur.

•What to do if you find a dog•
If you manage to catch a lost dog (kudos to you they can be slippery little suckers) do your best to keep yourself and the dog calm.
Restrain/confine the dog safely; belts, coat belts, rope can be used if you don't have a lead.
If the dog is injured (and you haven't had too many brandy's) take them to your nearest AEC (Animal Emergency Centre).
Call your relevant council/municipality (see list below) and select the 'After Hours' option on the automated menu.
Depending on how busy the staff are you may be advised to hold onto the dog overnight. Generally an Animal Management Officer will collect the dog from your location.
If you are required to keep the dog overnight provide them a safe and secure place away from existing pets, children and... escape routes!
It's best not to feed an unknown dog for a myriad of reasons. Do provide them with water.

HEALTH ALERT: Outbreaks of one of the most dangerous dog diseases have occurred across the country. And worst of all, it’s targeting our most vulnerable pets. Here’s all you need to know about Parvovirus and where it’s striking…

Parvovirus attacks the digestive system of dogs and if left untreated, will tragically kill 80% of those dogs that contract it.
Signs including extreme lethargy, vomiting and severe, often bloody diarrhoea.
Young, unvaccinated puppies are often most at risk with 158 cases currently recorded across the country.

The AVA (Australian Veterinary Association) is advising the current extreme hot spots to be:
- Wagga Wagga, NSW
- Tamworth, NSW
- Mildura, Vic
- Armadale, WA
- Northampton, WA

If you’re worried, please check your dog’s vaccination status. Proper and current vaccinations are incredibly effective at preventing the virus. Please stay safe out there guys...
