Today is 💛

At Vets of Geelong, we know how important it is to care for those around us, including our friends, coworkers, and even the pets in our lives. It can be tough to know when someone’s struggling, but asking, “Are you OK?” could be the first step in making a real difference.

Mental health matters for both people and animals, and opening up that conversation can lead to support, healing, and connection. Remember, you don’t have to ask just today—make it a habit to check in with the people around you every day. Even a small question can start a conversation that helps someone feel seen and supported.

We’re here for our community. Are you OK? 💛

Handsome Charlie was at our Geelong West clinic this week to have an eye grid keratotomy. 👁️

An eye grid keratotomy is a procedure performed by vets to treat chronic or recurrent corneal ulcers in dogs.
This can be common for brachycephalic (squashed face) breeds. When the outer layer of the cornea doesn’t heal properly, it can lead to ongoing discomfort and vision problems.

➡️ In photo 2, you can see Charlie’s ulcer stained green on the right hand side of his cornea.

Whilst the animal is sedated, the keratotomy involves creating tiny scratches on the cornea with a 25G needle to stimulate healing and encourage new, healthy tissue to grow. This procedure helps relieve pain and restore your dog’s vision, ensuring their eyes stay healthy and comfortable. 👀

➡️ Photo 4 shows the size of the ulcer after the scratches have been created (if you zoom in you may see a grid-like pattern!)

Even when teeth look mostly clean, there can be hidden plaque lurking beneath the surface! 🦷

One of our recent patients came in for a dental clean and polish. The before picture shows teeth that appear fairly clean, with some noticeable calculus buildup on the upper right molars. But with the help of iC Plaque, we can detect the hidden buildup you can’t see, ensuring every tooth gets a thorough clean.

Check out the stunning results post-procedure—these teeth are sparkling clean! 🌞

Let’s talk Dentistry 🦷🪥

Retained deciduous teeth (also known as baby teeth) occur when the baby teeth do not fall out naturally as the permanent (adult) teeth begin to emerge.
Surgical removal of the tooth is recommended under general anaesthetic to prevent further issues such as damage to the adult tooth and increased risk of dental disease associated with overcrowding.

This is wonderfully demonstrated by the talented Dr Rachael who performed the removal of a retained deciduous canine on a puppy at our Lara clinic this week. These photos show the extent of the canine root after extraction and also on X-rays and also how close the baby tooth is to the emerged adult canine, which would cause dental disease in the future.
Regular check-ups can help identify and address retained deciduous teeth early, ensuring healthy dental development for your puppy 🐶

Please contact our clinic if you have any questions or to book an appointment with one of our vets or nurses for a dental checkup 🦷

Winston’s Journey: How We Helped a Blocked Cat 🏥

This week, Winston came to our Geelong West Clinic with a life-threatening urinary blockage. 🚑 We quickly stepped in to help!

👀 Signs to watch for at home:
🔺Frequent litter box trips
🔺straining (which might look like constipation)
🔺lethargy
🔺loss of appetite
🔺and vomiting.
If you spot these, it’s an emergency for a male cat! 🚨

How we helped Winston:
👉🏻After stabilising him, Dr Lucy anaesthetised him to safely pass a urinary catheter. This catheter unblocks the urethra, allowing urine to flow freely again.

👉🏻We also flushed his bladder to clear out any crystals or debris that could cause another blockage.

👉🏻To prevent reblocking, the catheter stayed in place for 48 hours while we closely monitored his recovery.

👉🏻During his recovery Winston received intravenous fluid therapy, plenty of pain relief and lots of love from the team. 🩺💧

We’re thrilled to report that Winston is now back home, feeling much better and urinating on his own! ❤️

If you notice any of these signs in your cat, reach out to us immediately. The sooner we help, the better the outcome for your furry friend! 🐾

Even though it’s winter, those sneaky snakes are still around, taking advantage of the warmer days to come out of hiding—especially near the Barwon River. The photos attached were taken just last week around the Barwon river.

We’ve had reports of sightings, so it’s important to stay extra cautious. Remember to keep your dogs on a leash and avoid tall grass or bushy areas where snakes might be lurking. A little precaution can go a long way in keeping your furry friends safe!

Your pet’s safety is our top priority. Stay aware and enjoy the outdoors responsibly! 🐾
