Amazing group of people!
We all have days where we wake up and our load can seem overwhelming.
This feels especially true when you have lives hanging in the balance and you feel compelled to push through.
Lately we have been a little overwhelmed and, much like the proverbial duck on the pond, above water all looks swell but underwater we are paddling frantically to keep up.
And we think there are a number of people that don’t realise that our organisation is 100% unpaid labour. Our core team of three, receive no financial compensation for the hours of work we commit each and every week.
So, who are we?
We are partners.
We are parents.
We are employees, students, caregivers.
We have jobs, school runs, appointments, family events, and kids’ sports.
Our children get sick.
We get sick.
We feel overwhelmed.
We are just as busy as you.
But we choose to add rescue to our already full lives.
We don’t get paid.
We don’t get days off.
We don’t work less—we just stretch ourselves thinner.
Why?
Because every single day, animals are abandoned.
They are homeless.
Neglected.
Suffering.
And even with so many rescue groups out there—it’s still not enough.
So we wake up early, checking emails before the house stirs.
We go to bed late, answering messages after dinner, bedtime, and laundry.
We spend our lunch breaks trying to save a dog.
We check messages during toilet breaks.
We squeeze in adoptions on weekends.
We make calls while driving.
We sneak away on family holidays to arrange transport or take a desperate call for help.
We get tired.
We fall behind.
We make mistakes.
We forget.
We cry.
We’re met with frustration when our responses aren’t immediate.
We hear harsh words when someone disagrees with a decision we’ve made for an animal we know best.
We receive rude responses and curt replies to our well meaning intent.
We’re accused, dismissed, ignored, ghosted, stood up, and messed around.
Some days, we wonder how we can keep doing this.
But then we see the flood of animals still in need—
And through the exhaustion, we find a way to push through.
Please be patient.
Please be understanding.
And above all, please be kind.
Behind every rescued animal is a human whose only form of payment is the happiness and accomplishment that they draw from rescuing animals.
Without that reward, there will be no more volunteers left standing to hold the lead.
