Excluders in Beekeeping can be used for various purposes.

This queen excluder and Escape board are, as the names suggest, designed to restrict bees location within the hive.

Queen excluders are primarily, as the name suggests to keep the queen out of an area of the hive... or could this be to keep her within an area?
Other purposes could be:
- Locate your queen either by using below or above a hive body.
- Create a brood break
- Confine the queen from a swarm or new colony to reduce absconding risk

The escape board is most commonly used during honey harvesting season to clear bees from a honey super. Could there be other reasons to clear a section of the hive?

Now, when making products with different ingredients we do encourage everyone to consider the allergens.

If you are making a lip balm with a particular ingredient that could contaminate another recipe, we recommend using separate units.

These units are also made differently!
The largest candle maker has taps to suit the clean beeswax poured into the stunning candles shown.
And the lip balm tap is different to the soap maker and candle maker due to the possible ingredients that could be used in it.
Corrosive ingredients could damage the wrong unit.

Brood boxes or honey supers?

The size of the hive body components you build your hive with will determine on going use and harvest options.

You may have 1-2 brood boxes in full depth size
With ideal supers for honey

Some may prefer all equipment the same size and use full depths for honey supers

However you do this will determine some methods of Varroa management.

If you are ready to increase/replace your equipment consider the future use of components.

So fortunate to have our awesome Agriculture Victoria team organise an in-depth info session all about Varroa treatments for the retail stores of beekeeping equipment.

We are learned and will do our best to support our beekeeper customers.

You may hear "it's best to read the label" a lot and as we go, we will explain that this is due to ever so slight changes occurring between batches and as our knowledge of them adapts.
