Tomorrow may see many pet owners in the country wishing on a 4-leaf clover that their liver and kidneys felt better after a session at the pub celebrating St Patrick's Day!
But take heeds for our canine and feline friends as they too can suffer liver and kidney disease – though rarely self-induced!
The kidneys and liver are the primary organs in the body for cleansing the blood and filtering out any nasties. They have a remarkable ability to maintain function and keep doing their job even when they have suffered significant trauma. As such by the time symptoms of liver and kidney disease are obvious there can be quite serious levels of damage lurking.
Exposure to toxins including mouldy foods, certain plants such as Lillies, consumption of human medications, viral and bacterial infection plus many types of cancer, can all affect our pet's liver and kidney function.
We recommend routine blood testing as part of an annual check-up to best assess your mate's internal organs and keep them ‘leaping leprechaun” fit and healthy.
