🐜 Despite our best efforts, dogs and cats are commonly exposed to fleas in the environment. 🐶
On a healthy animal, these may only be a minor nuisance. But on the allergic dog, fleas can cause a serious problem. Itching around the tail and back are often signs that need to be addressed!
🧼 Although flea washes are readily available, oral flea preventatives are the most effective long-term treatment 💊 .
Prevention is ALWAYS better than treatment so make sure you beat the bite before the flea bites YOU!

LET’S TALK ABOUT P**P BA-BY 🐴🎉❤️
Foaling season is upon us and one of the most common issues we see in foals in the first 24 hours of life is a condition called RETAINED MECONIUM. Meconium is the p**p that is formed in the colon while the foal is still inside Mum. It looks like glossy dog p**p when it is passed and if it is not passed in its entirety in the first few hours of life then foals will often stop feeding, start straining to p**p, and get very tired which can then lead to larger problems like colic and failure of passive transfer of the important immunoglobulins that foals need in the first 24hours.
It is much more common in c**t foals but can affect either gender.
So be wary and wise and if you feel your new born foal is just not right call us for help. 0268471129 ❤️🐴

What hides below?
Without dental x-rays your vet only has half the picture. Important information about dental abnormalities can be missed on visual examination alone.
Performing dental X-rays allows your vet to discover abnormalities or dental disease such as pulp necrosis and tooth resorption that hides below the gum line.

FROM THE HORSE’S MOUTH
Unlike humans, a horse’s teeth continue to erupt throughout their life. The continual eruption helps to combat their grazing, however when their teeth aren’t worn down, problems can arise.
Sharp enamel points can be seen in horses as young as 2 years old. If left untreated, this can damage their cheeks and tongue, leading to performance issues.
Make sure that your horse has regular exam to help them keep comfortable and perform to the best of their abilities.

We are in the full swing of Dental Month this August!

🦷 Bad breath, drooling and tooth discolouration can all be early signs of dental disease.
🪥 Dental diets, toothbrushes and water supplements can all help to reduce the build-up of plaque and bacteria. But once tartar is set on the teeth, it can be very difficult to remove.
🐾Scaling and polishing your animal’s teeth is the best way to reduce any pre- existing dental disease and can help get your pet on their way to a fresh breath and healthier teeth!
See the results for yourself!

Don’t wait till it’s too late!
Often you won’t be able to see (or smell) dental disease until it is in the advanced stages. At this point the damage is irreversible and may require tooth extraction or advanced dentistry treatment to try and save the teeth. Booking your pet in for regular dental checks ensures that any dental abnormalities and periodontal disease is detected early enough for prophylactic treatment.

August is PET DENTAL MONTH
Bringing dental awareness to the mouths of pets in the Gilgandra District
Did you know:
1. Dental disease is the most common disease we see in the consult room!
2. Up to 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have dental disease by the age of 2
3. Smaller breed dogs have a much higher incidence of dental disease
4. Dog breath is not a thing – most likely your pet has plaque (the soft mush of food debris and bacteria that eventually becomes tartar)
5. The persuasive statement most likely to be met with incredulous laughter is….. “The gold standard to preventing dental disease is to brush your pet’s teeth with a toothbrush” 🤣
So, given the statistics – there’s a high chance your pet is afflicted with dental disease!!
If you have don’t have enough spare hours in the day for tooth brushing (or you do and would like some tips) then visit our website www.gilgandravets.com/articles/ for options on how to manage dental disease in our pets.
Let’s keep those happy smiles healthy and preserve those 42 (d) teeth for your pet’s lifetime.
