Are you unsure about getting your pet desexed? Unsure what it involves?
Animal desexing involves the surgical removal of their reproductive organs under a general anaesthetic.
By removing these organs, you completely eliminate the potential for unwanted litters and reduce the risk of behaviours, cancers and diseases driven by these hormones.
At Gilgandra Veterinary Clinic, desexing is a procedure that involves:
🩸 Pre-anaesthetic blood testing
💧 Fluid therapy
🩹 Pain relief
😴 Gaseous anaesthetic
🧼 Sterile surgery
📈 Monitoring
This ensures that your pet remains stable and safe during surgery whilst minimising unwanted complications.
We encourage desexing of dogs from the age of 5 months however, dogs and cats of ANY AGE that are not being used for breeding are also encouraged to be sterilised.

🐮 Are you disappointed with your pregnancy rates this season? 🐄
This could be a sign that your Bull is under-performing.
🧐 The Australian Association of Cattle Veterinarians considers a Bull to be ‘fertile’ if they can achieve (by natural service) a pregnancy rate of 60% and 90% in 50 normal cycling females within a 3 and 9-week joining period respectively.
If your bull(s) are older, in-experienced , diseased or injured, they may be compromising on the reproductive efficiency of your herd.
The best way to assess the productivity of your herd is to get your cows pregnancy tested early. From there, problems can be identified and investigated. This can include:
🦠 Reproductive disease investigations
💧Bull fertility testing
Fortunately, both are services provided at Gilgandra Veterinary clinic.

This little parasite (Demodex sp.) is the cause of DEMODECTIC MANGE . This mite lives naturally on the skin however, if the skin’s natural balance is disrupted, the mite can proliferate and cause serious skin disease.
Demodectic mange will often present in puppies and older dogs. Infestations can look localised (such as hair loss around the eyes and mouth) or generalised lesions (full body hair loss and skin thickening).
🐞 Fortunately, routine preventative anti-parasiticides can help to avoid this condition and leave your pet’s skin free of ticks, fleas AND mites!

Does your dog have itchy skin? Consistent ear infections? Runny eyes or sneezing fits?
Itchy skin can range from mild to obsessive and usually occur in the armpits, groin, muzzle or paws. If left untreated, they can scratch themselves raw and develop painful infections.
Itchy skin and ears are a sign of seasonal allergies. These are caused by hypersensitivities to pollen, mites, fleas and grasses in their environment.
A variety of treatment options are available but do require consistency to avoid ‘flare-up’s’ of these allergies.
Not all dogs respond the same, so some treatment trials may be required to achieve control of your pets allergies.
The most important thing is to limit your dogs exposure to allergens. This can include washing them with medicated shampoos and ensuring they are up to date with flea and tick preventatives.

It’s time to get your broodmare in ship-shape before breeding season!
Breeding season can be a stressful time for many people but at Gilgandra Veterinary Clinic, we are here to help! Here are some tips to get the most out of your mare:
1. NUTRITION 🐴: Mares should be in a ‘light’ body condition prior to joining. This ensures that your mare is cycling effectively and uterine clearance mechanisms can clear potential uterine infections.
2. PREVENTATIVE HEALTH 💉: Mares can pass some worm burdens to their foal in utero. Ensure that a faecal egg count and appropriate anthelmintic treatment is performed. Tetanus vaccinations should also be up-to-date.
3. DENTAL HEALTH 🦷: the teeth play an important role in keeping a mare comfortable. Reports have found that women with periodontal disease are 7x more likely to loose a pregnancy. Although this hasn’t been proven in the horse, dental health is still an important factor that contributes to a horse’s feed conversion and weight gain. Routine ‘floating’ may help but without a thorough veterinary dental exam, you may only be dealing with a small piece of the puzzle.
4. PRE-BREEDING EVALUATION: the earlier a mare’s reproductive health can be assessed, the earlier problems can be identified and rectified. If your mare is known to have problems foaling OR wasn’t bred last season, a reproductive exam should be considered.
Fortunately, most of the items on this list can be checked with a visit to Gilgandra Veterinary Clinic. Our team are able to analyse your mares faeces, assess their teeth and reproductive health whilst providing extensive advice on broodmare management!

‘Performance floating’ refers to the examination of the function and symmetry of a horse’s incisor and molar teeth with appropriate treatment. These procedures are conducted to maximise comfort when the horse is chewing or biting. In doing so, rideability is enhanced. These procedures are often recommended once or twice a year throughout a horse’s life.
During these procedures, a thorough oral exam is conducted and any pathology is then rectified. During these exams, treatment can include:
🐺 Extraction of wolf teeth
🦷 Bit seat contouring
🧢 Retained cap removal
🔪 Reduction of sharp enamel points
Equine oral exams and dentistry should almost be as routine as a vaccination. In doing so, you are improving your horse’s comfort, longevity and performance!
If you think your horse is overdue for their oral exam, give Gilgandra Veterinary Clinic a call!

Good dental habits are best started young. Puppies will undergo rapid dental changes as they lose their baby teeth. Complications such as malocclusion and retained teeth are common but can be rectified if addressed early. The use of ball toys will help loosen ligaments around the baby teeth and encourage them to fall out whilst also adjusting the occlusion of poorly aligned teeth.
Pups should be comfortable with people handling their mouth to examine their teeth. Opening their mouths and using a toothbrush will ensure that oral exams at the Vet are an enjoyable experience.
Introducing a consistent brushing routine will also help to reduce the plaque on your pup’s teeth before it hardens to tartar.
Ask your vet about your puppy’s baby teeth and what you can do to help give them the best start!

⚠️ ZOONOSIS ALERT⚠️
There have been two confirmed cases of canine Leptospirosis in coastal NSW in the last month.
Leptospirosis is a severe and often fatal bacterial disease that affects dogs, cats, pigs, ruminants and HUMANS. Risk of disease can be increased following periods of high rain fall and elevated rodent populations.
Dogs either a history of rodent hunting and/or access to stagnant water have a higher risk of contracting the disease.
Unwell dogs will often experience:
😴 Lethargy
🤮 Vomiting and/or diarrhoea
💧 Increased drinking or urination
👁️ yellow gums and/or eyes

💉 Fortunately, vaccinations are available to help reduce the severity of infection. Dogs in high risk area or with access to mice are encouraged to get vaccinated.
☎️ If you are concerned about your animals or want to know their vaccination status, please contact the clinic on 6847 1129

❗️ We have had an increase in the number of Tetanus (‘lockjaw’) cases diagnosed in small and large animals around Gilgandra.
🦠 Tetanus is a severe bacterial disease that causes a rigid ascending paralysis. Animals will contract the bacteria when open wounds become contaminated with dirt. The bacteria will release a neurotoxin that results in muscle stiffness, protrusion of the third eyelids and/or erect ears and tail heads.
😢 This disease is SEVERE and often FATAL.
🐮 Cattle, sheep and horses can be routinely vaccinated against tetanus and is started as young animals.
🐶 Cats and dogs are not routinely vaccinated. Instead, open wounds should be cleaned thoroughly and protected from dirt and debris.
💉 If your animal has been cut by rusty metal or has had surgery where the site could become contaminated, a booster vaccine may be required.
☎️ If you are concerned about your animals’s vaccination status or are concerned about them, please call the clinic on 6847 1129.

As cats age their dietary, exercise and healthcare needs change. Many of these changes happen between the ages of 7 and 10 years. Although many conditions can’t be ‘cured’ they can be effectively managed. The key to ensure your cat has the best quality of life is by detecting these changes early enough to delay their progression.
Diseases that are more commonly experienced in older cats include:
🦷 Dental disease
💧 Kidney disease
♥️ Heart disease
🦴 Arthritis
Many owners will assume their cat’s behavioural changes are JUST because they are aging. However, changes such as inappropriate toileting, aggression and inappetence should alert you to an underlying disease.
If you are concerned about your cat or think they need a check up, give Gilgandra Veterinary Clinic a call on 6847 1129.
