Couple of perspectives and questions I heard today while listening to a podcast that I found interesting and thought to share them.

When booking dogs in a few questions that should be asked.
*Would your dog let you pick up a tissues box and touched it all over while laying down?
*Would your dog let you touched it with a pen all over while standing up?
*Would your dog allow you to touch it all over while in a dog park and it’s full of excited dogs running around barking and making noise ?
When I say touch everywhere that means picking up legs and feet, faces and tails and bottoms.
If you answered no to any of these questions then how would your dog feel when a stranger was to try all this.

This is essentially what you’re asking a dog groomer to do.
To help us be able to make grooming for your dog consensual by your dog (consensual meaning being touched while relaxed and excepting/ not trying to get away or fighting the situation)
There is a lot of training you can do at home to help your dog with this. Training doesn’t mean obedience.
Training means touching while laying on the couch .
If you can do that all over then ask your dog to stand up and touch all over including picking up legs and tail etc.
then take your pup outside and touch them standing out there.
Then pick up something off your table and touch your dog everywhere with that object. Swap that object with other things and touch.
Go somewhere busy like a park and touch your dog.
The more your dog is relaxed when being touched by objects helps us as groomer touch your dog without your dog thinking grooming is scary .

Yes groomers are professionals and know how to “handle” dogs however we are using tools that can potentially hurt your dog. Hurt us. Sharp scissors near your dogs eyes .
We can cut dogs and dogs can bite us with the potential of us never being able to work again if it’s bad enough.
We can get scratches and scars if your dog has a fear of being groomed because expectations from owners are for us to complete a groom even if the dog is not consenting.
Grooming a dog is for the dogs whole life so why not put the time in and help your pup to be as comfortable as possible with the grooming session.
We groomer can help to train your pup but one hour every 8weeks is not enough time to get them comfortable.

Older dogs can still be trained to except touch so let’s not think it’s to let for them. Start where they are comfortable being touched , if you notice a spot where their body language changes then that the spot they need working on but don’t just try to touch that area constantly brush your hand over that area then move back to a spot they are ok with. Then repeat etc.

Training dogs for grooming starts with the owner 🙂
