This adorable little girl had her first groom today. Her hooman mamma brought her in nice and young, so she can become accustomed to grooming.

A first groom is a huge deal because their first experience dictates how they view grooming in the future. I always endeavour to provide a good first experience. I take it slow introducing them to all the noises, vibrations and sensations of grooming all whilst giving kisses, reassurance, cuddles and treats.

Even though it's winter, puppies need regular grooming so it becomes part of life to them and not a punishment. Regular maintenance means no painful mats either, which requires a shave down.

Lets talk nails and feet; I know it can be scary to trim a dog's nails, but it is a vital part of their care.

Unfortunately some dogs don't come for a groom for many months and in the meantime, the nails and fur between the paw pads grows. This fur prevents dogs from being able to grip with it's pads, harbours grass seeds which can burrow into the skin and easily mats into hard clumps, which is painful for the dog. If you don't feel comfortable cutting the nails, may I recommend the LuckyTail nail trimmer. I use it on your dogs. This trimmer buffs the nails down in a nice gentle way. It has a light on it so you can see the quick in light coloured nails and it's quiet. This means you could buff the nails down every week and improve the health of your dog's feet. If the nails are dark, you will know you are close to the quick when you see a white spot. Stop then. Any questions, send me a message. 😄

I thought you might want to see this before and after. As usual all my grooms are completed with the dog's comfort in mind. Taking time to give them breaks, cuddles, treats, and reassurance. I am the known as the gentle groomer.

What's important to me, being a dog groomer, is providing the best experience I can for the dog. If dog friendly, I love to let them play with my puppy, run and get some energy out in my fully enclosed garden. I love to provide comfort, kisses, pats, treats and make it fun to come here. I am not a conveyer belt type groomer, I only offer a small number of appointments per day so that I can provide grooming in an as stress-free-as-possible environment. Just look at those faces and the pure joy they are having. This is what gets me out of bed in the morning.

As the weather warms up, we need to change some things in how we look after our dogs, such as time of day we walk them, never leaving our dogs in cars or out in the sun without them having access to shade and lots of fresh water. This is great info to look out for heat stroke.

⚠️ Public Service Announcement ⚠️

The longer you wish to keep your pets coat, The more often you need to visit your groomer.

Do you leave your dog longer between grooming appointments because you like the length of the coat a month or more after their haircut but then when you visit the groomer they say they have no option but to take the coat short?

This is because a longer coat means more maintenance is required and most pet owners start to struggle to keep the coat matt free after a certain amount of weeks.

1 week can actually mean the difference between your dog being styled or being shaved.

So the only way to keep the coat longer is to actually bring them more regularly to keep the coat tangle free and to make sure the groom is not too much for your pet.

If your dog doesn’t really enjoy going to the groomer it is much kinder to keep them on a regular schedule so
1. The groom is less work for the groomer and less for your dog to cope with on each session.
2. Your dog sees routine as a regular part of life and every now and then as more of a punishment. Dogs thrive on regular routine.

Groomers recommending a more regular schedule is not for us to make as much money as possible, It is actually so we can give the client what they desire while at the same time keeping grooming a positive and stress free experience for the pet.
