๐Ÿ‘‹ MEET THE TEAM ๐Ÿ‘‹

Meet Melissa, head Veterinary Nurse and the truest Jill of all trades!

Chances are if you've been in to the clinic then you have met nurse Mel. Mel has been at Mundaring Veterinary Hospital for 10 years and comes with the richest of Veterinary Nursing backgrounds (having nursed every species great and small that come through our clinic doors and has even nursed over in the UK as well!)

๐ŸŒŸ Favourite part of the job: With love and knowledge for nursing all patients great and small, you'll often find her snuggling patients in recovery or greeting patients in the waiting room. Joy for Mel is assisting in surgery, managing hospital patients and chatting with clients.

๐Ÿ  Outside of the job: Mel is the epitome of a Duracell Bunny - she loves the outdoors and being in nature, spending time with her furred/feathered babies and renovating her home.

๐Ÿพ Mel is owned by 2 horses (Indi and Leo), 2 sheep (Bart and Harry), 3 dogs (Eileen, Leroy and Tilly), 6 cats (Suga, Tom, Ginny, Frankie, Holly and Twilight), 3 galahs (Tuey, Tinsel and Dallas) and 13 chickens (there's one named Winnie... and yes the others have nicknames) at home. And there's plenty of room on her acreage property for more (if you ask her!)

๐Ÿ˜ We keep Mel happy at work with regular coffee infusions (her order is a Flat White), savoury goods or cadbury chocolate and good vibes (or singing along to music!)

๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ† BRAVERY AWARD ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†

Jaffa came in to see Dr. Sherrilynn for a general check over and ear examination (because her paw-rents had noticed she had started to become uncomfortable with her skin and ears).

Jaffa was super brave for her check over and ear assessment which included:
๐Ÿ”Ž A full physical examination from nose to tail
๐Ÿ”Ž Examination of her ears with an otoscope
๐Ÿ”Ž And taking a sample of her ears for cytology (to look under the microscope for signs of infection)

Her ear cytology revealed she had an infection down her left ear which required medications to go home with and an allergy injection to help settle her skin down.

Jaffa was not only the BRAVEST girl for her check over and injection, but she also holds a super special place in Dr. Sherrilynn's heart after she was treated intensively last year in hospital with cholangiohepatitis and pancreatitis (inflammation of the liver, bile ducts and pancreas).

We're so glad that she is on the other side and for her dedicated owners โค๏ธ

CONGRATULATIONS BENSON!

Benson is our wonderful Kennel hand and Veterinary Nurse Assistant.

You may not always see Benson around the clinic, but he is an integral part of our team - supporting our nursing and veterinary teams, helping and tending to patient's needs in hospital and keeping the hospital shelves stocked and organised.

Benson has a love for all animals and a passion for animal health and care. He has been studying hard and working towards getting in to Veterinary Studies at Murdoch University and we are so pleased to announce:

๐ŸŽ‰ BENSON GOT IN! WOOHOO! ๐ŸŽ‰

We're so incredibly proud of the hard work he has put in (and ahead of him!) and know he is going to make the most amazing vet!

CASE: ED AND HIS RED FLAG (well... ribbon) โ›ณ

History:
Ed came in to visit Dr. Christina a few weeks ago when his owners felt like something wasn't quite right. Ed had multiple episodes of vomiting in a short period of time, was tender on touching his abdomen and was disinterested in his food.

Exam:
On examination Ed was quiet, painful when palpating his loops of intestine and really reluctant to move around much at all. It was decided that Ed needed to be admitted to hospital for pain relief, blood testing, fluids and radiographs (Xrays) of his abdomen to see what may have been causing Ed grief.

Diagnostics:
Ed's radiographs were very suspicious of a possible linear foreign body (this refers to a linear or long piece of foreign material i.e. string, rope, stocking or material that gets caught in the intestine).
โŒ No foreign body or item (outside of normal digesta!) in the intestines are a welcome thing as they can:
๐Ÿ‘Ž Delay the passage/completely block movement of normal digesta
๐Ÿ‘Ž Cause significant pain
๐Ÿ‘Ž Cause severe fluid and electrolyte abnormalities
๐Ÿ‘Ž Cause vomiting
๐Ÿ‘Ž Can cause life-threatening damage to the intestine
๐Ÿ‘Ž AND can perforate the intestine leading to severe peritonitis (severe inflammation of the abdominal cavity)
โŒ Linear foreign bodies can be even more troublesome because part of the long material can get lodged in a section of the intestine and can cause the following loops of intestine to bunch up (or plicate) as the intestine tries its best to move things through.

Treatment:
After his blood assessment, pain relief and fluids for stabilisation, Ed was taken to exploratory surgery. Whilst Ed was under anaesthesia, Dr. Christina performed an exploration of his abdomen and removed a large piece of ribbon via a gastrotomy (removing the ribbon from the stomach) and 2 enterotomies (removing the remaining stuck ribbon).

Recovery:
Ed recovered well from surgery and stabilisation in hospital and through overnight care with Perth Vet Emergency Cannington (we're super grateful they are able to offer afterhour emergency services, but also assessment and continued care overnight for hospital patients too!)

Here's Ed 1 week later for his check over and pain assessment - we're pleased to announce he is going incredibly well. His owners are testament to reacting quickly to changes and great supportive care at home.

From us to Ed: you're the sweetest ginger boy but anymore ribbon and you'll be a red flag.

๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ† BRAVERY AWARD ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ†

Miss "Lucy" came in to see Dr. Beth after her groomer and owners had noticed she was very uncomfortable and had some discharge from a small spot near her v***a.

With a suspicion that there might be something more sneaky causing the problem - it was decided that she should have an anaesthetic and surgery to explore the site.

Dr. Sherrilynn investigated and removed a troublesome grass seed from the draining site! The site was then flushed and left open to promote drainage.

As with all of our patients under anaesthesia at this time of year, we made sure to check between her toes, in her mouth and in her ears for additional seeds (and yep there was another sneaky one hiding down her right ear!) ๐ŸŒฑ

Just another important reminder to always check your pets for grass seeds and to book in for a consultation if you have any concerns.

You'll find Dr. Beth in brightly coloured scrubs and with a warm and friendly personality to match on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the clinic or on farm.

Please make her feel welcome๐Ÿ˜€

๐Ÿ’ THE SEARCH FOR COHEN'S SECOND TESTICLE ๐Ÿ’

Meet the beautiful Cohen! Cohen is the sweetest 9 month old Border Collie who came in to see Dr. Sherrilynn for his castration (desexing) procedure today.

Cohen was a bit different to our usual dog castrates, in that he only had one testicle descended into his sc***um (sac). This is known as unilateral cryptorchidism.

You see, testicles come in pairs, and by 6-months of age our canine friends should have both testicles descended into the sc***um (in Christmas terms both baubles should be seen and felt in the sac between their back legs) ๐Ÿ’

Sometimes the abnormal testicle may only descend into the inguinal canal (the small canal in the groin), sometimes the abnormal testicle remains in the abdomen and doesn't take the migratory journey and sometimes (truly rare cases) one testicle may not form at all ๐Ÿ˜ฎ! Sometimes neither testicle makes the journey to the sc***um (this is known as bilateral cryptorchidism).

It is important that the abnormal testicle is removed, as the abnormal testicle is at a higher risk of testicular cancer and disease.

For Cohen this meant performing an anaesthetic and surgery to remove his normal (descended) testicle and an incision into his abdomen and exploration to find his abnormal (undescended) testicle. It can be a challenge finding and removing the undescended testicle as it can hide between and behind other organs and is often MUCH smaller than its normal counterpart.

Cohen was an amazing patient today and recovered beautifully. Here's a picture of Cohen cuddling with nurse Katie just before he was ready to go home (and a picture of his two testicles for size comparison!)

"BETTER OUT THAN IN"

Meet Django, the 1 year old Whippet, who LOVES his food and to chew on things (that he probably shouldn't!)

Dad left Django alone with his lick mat and Django thought it would be a good idea to take licking to the extreme and keep chewing through the plastic ๐Ÿคฆ

When Django's Dad noticed what had happened he brought him in to see Dr. Olivia, where Django was checked over and then induced to vomit (to prevent the amount of plastic that was passing through his intestine and reducing the risk of an obstruction). ๐Ÿคฎ

Django felt a little bit sorry for himself after the fact, but was back eating his dinner when he got home!

๐Ÿ IT'S SNAKE SEASON - BE SNAKE-SMART! ๐Ÿ

A really great post from Perth Vet Emergency on tips for avoiding snakes, keeping your pet safe and the importance of getting your pet straight to your nearest Vet / Emergency clinic if they do present with signs.

What are some of the signs of a snake bite?
๐Ÿ Lethargy
๐Ÿ Muscle weakness, muscle tremors and/or stumbling (ataxia)
๐Ÿ Paralysis (inability to walk or breathe)
๐Ÿ Loss of bladder and/or bowel control
๐Ÿ Bleeding (from the nose/mouth/other orifices)
๐Ÿ Blood in the urine
๐Ÿ Vomiting

โŒ DONT SPEND TIME LOOKING FOR A BITE SITE OR APPLYING A BANDAGE - you generally won't be able to find where your pet has been bitten. And time delays can be life threatening.
โœ… DO GET YOUR PET STRAIGHT INTO A VETERINARY CLINIC

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact our clinic in hours

GRASS SEED SEASON IN FULL SWING

After a flourishing Spring, with the drier weather upon us and taking our furkids into the great outdoors - grass seeds are finding a way! ๐ŸŒฑ

The sticky-little-suckers have a great way of diving into all of the nooks and crannies.

Case example: This is Sammy, a handsome 10 year old gentleman who's Mum noticed he was uncomfortable and shaking his head. Suspicious he had been poking his head into places they shouldn't be, Sammy's Mum brought him in to see us - pictured is the long culprit we pulled out of his right ear! (The smile says everything - he was much more comfortable with the grass seed out!)

What are some places grass seeds can venture / what to look out for:
๐Ÿง EARS (head shaking, ear scratching, yelping and head tilting)
๐Ÿง NOSE (sneezing, face rubbing, nasal discharge, reverse sneezing/snorting)
๐Ÿง EYES (squinting, face rubbing, discharge from the eyes)
๐Ÿง MOUTH/TONSILS (gagging, lip licking/abnormal chewing behaviour, not eating, face rubbing, coughing)
๐Ÿง TOES/FEET (excessively licking at the feet, lameness, discharge/pus from the site)
๐Ÿง BODY INCLUDING GE****LS (excessively licking, discomfort, a large swelling, discharge/pus from the site)

Grass seeds can cause a LOT of damage, so its important to act with haste so they can be found and retrieved before they cause further issues.

CALM, COOL AND COLLECTED ๐Ÿ’•

Maia the 1 year old Malinois came in for a procedure last week. Maia is incredibly sweet, but is a much more comfortable patient with visits outside of the clinic doors, and as such our team worked to keep Maia as comfortable as possible during her stay.

What did this look like?
โญ Her Hu-MUM and our team made a plan to bring her in with oral medication on board that would make her more relaxed for her visit in the clinic
โญ Maia was checked over and given her injection (pre-medication) with her Hu-MUM around
โญ Our team always work to keep loud and scary noises to a minimum with all patients prior to their procedure and in recovery
โญ Ensuring Maia's mum was available at any part of the day when called in to come and sit with her in recovery, or take her home once she had recovered.
โญ Using intradermal (under the skin) sutures that don't require removal

Maia was a superstar in clinic and our team are grateful to her dedicated owner for working to make Maia's visit a successful and low-stress one! ๐Ÿ’•

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS MY TWO FRONT TEETH ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

They say not to look a gift horse in the mouth - BUT the best gift you can get your horse this Christmas is a sound and happy mouth!

That's why booking your horse in for a dental is the BEST give you can give them.

WHY?
โœ… Because they get a general check over by their vet
โœ… Because you can discuss any questions you might have about their diet, worming regime and management
โœ… Because they get to have a full oral assessment and performance float of their teeth (including assessing for any oral baddies such as gingivitis, loose teeth or grass seeds)
โœ… AND because for our oldies or patient's on long term medications it is also the perfect time to discuss how their management is going and take bloods required for monitoring

Here's Dr. Sherrilynn with her own horse Country (the Clydesdale X) - recovering after Mum gave him his annual mouth and dental check.
๐ŸŽ…What else is in Country's Holiday stocking? ๐ŸŽ…
โญHis booster vaccinations
โญCarrots (for the carrot test - If You Know You Know!)
โญHis annual strategic worming plan
โญHis in-feed psyllium husk plan to reduce sand and the possibility of sand colic
โญA new fly veil (every year... because he doesn't take care of them!)

A FAMILIAR FACE (+ 1!) ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿซถ

We were all overjoyed and grateful to see Dr. Jess back in the clinic with her new little addition in tow! ๐Ÿฅฐ

It was only right - given little one tagged along for the past 8 months whilst Mum worked - we branded her with her own surgical hat and stethoscope (though she's got some growing-in to do!) ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•

Always grateful for visitors and snacks - this one was extra special ๐Ÿ’•
