ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS MY TWO FRONT TEETH ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

They say not to look a gift horse in the mouth - BUT the best gift you can get your horse this Christmas is a sound and happy mouth!

That's why booking your horse in for a dental is the BEST give you can give them.

WHY?
โœ… Because they get a general check over by their vet
โœ… Because you can discuss any questions you might have about their diet, worming regime and management
โœ… Because they get to have a full oral assessment and performance float of their teeth (including assessing for any oral baddies such as gingivitis, loose teeth or grass seeds)
โœ… AND because for our oldies or patient's on long term medications it is also the perfect time to discuss how their management is going and take bloods required for monitoring

Here's Dr. Sherrilynn with her own horse Country (the Clydesdale X) - recovering after Mum gave him his annual mouth and dental check.
๐ŸŽ…What else is in Country's Holiday stocking? ๐ŸŽ…
โญHis booster vaccinations
โญCarrots (for the carrot test - If You Know You Know!)
โญHis annual strategic worming plan
โญHis in-feed psyllium husk plan to reduce sand and the possibility of sand colic
โญA new fly veil (every year... because he doesn't take care of them!)

A FAMILIAR FACE (+ 1!) ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿซถ

We were all overjoyed and grateful to see Dr. Jess back in the clinic with her new little addition in tow! ๐Ÿฅฐ

It was only right - given little one tagged along for the past 8 months whilst Mum worked - we branded her with her own surgical hat and stethoscope (though she's got some growing-in to do!) ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•

Always grateful for visitors and snacks - this one was extra special ๐Ÿ’•

A PET IS FURR-EVER

๐Ÿˆ Kitten season is in full swing, with many roaming and non-desexed Queens (female cats) birthing large litters.

Here's our amazing Veterinary Student Tissy helping with kitten feeding and rearing. She's an absolute superstar and has been an asset to our team the past 2 weeks! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Our hearts and hands are big and open trying to nurse abandoned kittens (either dropped off by good samaritans, or left on our doorstep) before they go into foster care (thanks to the amazing rescue organisations out there). HOWEVER, many organisations are experiencing extremely high volumes of abandoned kittens and unwanted mothers (and many fosters are unable to take on more).

In the Veterinary and Animal Caring professions we do as much as we can to help these individuals, but we can't stress the importance of responsible ownership and desexing your pets.
๐Ÿ‘€ DID YOU KNOW:
๐Ÿ‘‰ 1 Queen can easily produce over 100 offspring in her breeding life ๐Ÿ™€
๐Ÿ‘‰ A Tom (entire male cat) can impregnate MULTIPLE females each day

SO...
๐Ÿ’– Desexing/neutering your cat is so important to preventing unwanted and abandoned litters
๐Ÿ’– Giving your cat an enriched indoor lifestyle from a young age can meet their physical and psychological needs lifelong

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact our team

Sprocket's wonderful owners rushed him in to see us when they noticed his body covered in hives (welts) after a suspect interaction with an insect.

With the warmer weather and beautiful flowers out in bloom be on the look out for bee's and stings - and if you have any concerns please feel free to contact our clinic.

WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING...

A delayed but much deserved post! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Recently we had the pleasure of having Agricultural Science student Beth see practice with us for a week. With aspirations to become a Veterinarian (and more specifically a Mixed Practice Vet), Beth came on board to dip her toes in and see what Mixed Practice Vet life in the hills had in store. ๐Ÿ„๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ•๐Ÿˆ

From watching surgeries in the practice, to clipping dags (and maggots) from a fly blown sheep, cuddling puppies during their vaccinations and discussing case work up, Beth proved herself to be the most keen and able Vet in the making!

โญ Beth we were so grateful to have you on board for the week, for all the ways you helped with patients and clients, and all the ways you put a smile on our faces each day. We're so excited to see your journey and know you're going to make an excellent Mixed Practice Veterinarian (the best kind hey!) โญ

THE HOME STRETCH!

With just a few weeks left until their final exams, our final year Murdoch Veterinary Students are on the home stretch to graduation! ๐ŸŽ‰

In the lead up to and after exams they will still have practicals to complete and time in clinic (before graduation in December), so we will still be seeing a few new and familiar student faces through the clinic ๐Ÿก

Here's Farah having a de-stress cuddle with clinic cat JDโœจ. Farah has been an absolute legend this week - she has risen to every challenge we have put in front of her and been an asset during our really busy days. Good luck Farah, we know you've got this final stretch ๐Ÿ’ช

17/09/2024

ITCHING, SCRATCHING, LICKING - OH MY!

๐ŸŒธ With Spring in full swing - so begins the allergy season for many of our patients ๐ŸŒธ

๐Ÿƒ"Atopic Dermatitis" or "Atopy" is a common skin condition characterized by excessive itchiness and is caused by a reaction to substances in the environment known as allergens. As allergens contact the skin of a sensitive patient (dog or cat) they cause an inflammatory response that results in excessive skin itching, licking or chewing.

Some areas that patient's may itch, scratch, lick or chew:
๐Ÿ˜“ Scratching at the body (behind the elbows, behind the neck, rubbing their belly along the floor)
๐Ÿ˜“ Licking/chewing at the feet
๐Ÿ˜“ Rubbing at the face and ears (YES! Cats and dogs that get ear infections CAN have underlying allergies!)
๐Ÿ˜“ Scooting the bum

Some patient's may also have other allergic inflammatory responses including:
๐Ÿ˜“ Allergic conjunctivitis (signs include excessive tearing or redness of the eyes)
๐Ÿ˜“ Allergic rhinitis (signs include sneezing)
๐Ÿ˜“ Hot spots/pyoderma (signs of moist/dermatitis lesions over the body)

๐ŸƒThere are MANY different types of allergens that exist (including pollens, moulds, dust mites and skin cells/dander among many others) - so some patients CAN be affected year long, however Spring and Summer are the most prolific times we see patients coming in.

โ—Chronic itching and licking can be of great distress to our fur pets - over time chronic skin changes (such as thickening and dark pigmentation of the skin) and behavioural changes (anxiety, distress) can occur. So for their physical AND mental health it is so important to help your dog and cat's skin!

๐Ÿƒ Many different breeds of dog and cat can be affected, and whilst there is no cure for atopy, there are many different management and medication strategies that can keep your fur kid happy and healthy.

Some of these therapies include:
โญ Keeping your pet up to date with their flea and mite control
โญ Use of certain pet friendly shampoo's and medicated topical treatments as prescribed by your vet to keep your patient's coat healthy
โญ Use of certain medications to reduce the inflammatory response (these can be oral or injectable medications) and itchiness
โญ Use of certain diets in case of food allergies or sensitivities
โญ Referral to a dermatologist about allergy testing and desensitisation therapy (if you're wanting to identify what may be causing the reaction and if a desensitisation program can be pursued).

If you have any questions or feel your patient is affected by the dreaded itch and want to know what the next steps are, then feel free to contact our team.

HE'S SNUGGLIER THAN THE AVERAGE BEAR!

Meet ๐ŸถYogi. Yogi is a super cute Rottweiler who visited us recently to be castrated (desexed/sterilised). He was the bravest boy for his visit and won all of our hearts!

So what did his castration procedure involve?
โญ๏ธ An admit with his human and our veterinary team to discuss any questions his human had (including the option to have a pre-anaesthetic blood test to check his organ function and blood levels)
โญ๏ธ A pre-operative check over with a Veterinarian before his procedure
โญ๏ธ A pre-medication before his procedure (a strong pain relief and sedative medication) to make him feel relaxed and comfortable before, during and after his procedure
โญ๏ธ A full general anaesthetic (this included placing an IV catheter to give him an agent that put him under the first stage of anaesthesia, then placing a tube to maintain his airway and provide him with oxygen and an anaesthetic agent to keep him maintained under inhaled anaesthesia)
โญ๏ธ Keeping him comfortable under anaesthesia - providing him with warmth to maintain his body temperature (this is ESPECIALLY important for our patients recovery and healing) and IV fluids to help maintain his blood pressure
โญ๏ธ Close monitoring by his Veterinary team (his Veterinarian and Senior Veterinary Nurse) during his procedure and recovery - to monitor his heart, lungs, temperature, blood pressure, oxygen/saturation levels, anaesthetic depth and reflexes and pain response
โญ๏ธ His procedure (of course!) - surgically removing both testicles and closing the surgical site with under the skin sutures
โญ๏ธ Administration of a pain relief injection to reduce pain and inflammation
โญ๏ธ A pain relief medication to go home with for a few days
โญ๏ธ Fitting him with an e-collar (cone) to prevent him licking and irritating his surgical site
โญ๏ธ PLENTY of cuddles and love from the veterinary team - including a meal in recovery and regular toilet walks
โญ๏ธ Discharge with a senior Veterinary nurse and his human to discuss ongoing care and recovery
โญ๏ธ Post-operative recheck with a senior Veterinary nurse to recheck his surgical site 10-14 days after his procedure (to ensure his site was healing well and to discuss next steps in his recovery)

We know that the thought of an anaesthetic or procedure can sometimes feel overwhelming not knowing what is involved or what might be happening behind the scenes. We strive to you with certainty and are more than happy to ask any questions you might have ๐Ÿซถ

FELINEEEEE GOOD! A HAPPY VISIT TO THE VET ๐Ÿ˜ป

Did you know that our feline friends get stressed? Stress can be a significant component towards feline behavioural problems and some common diseases as well.

Cats do not always show obvious signs of unhappiness or stress, therefore it is important to know the signs and work towards ways to reduce stressors.

Let's focus on some ways that you can reduce stress for your cat when visiting the clinic:
๐Ÿ Help your cat associate the carrier with positive experiences:
๐ŸŒธUse a safe and secure carrier for visits (preferably a sturdy plastic carrier with a familiar blanket/towel down the bottom for comfort).
๐ŸŒธ A positive pheromone spray (such as feliway) can be used inside the carrier 10-15minutes prior to travel. This pheromone spray mimics the natural secretions cats produce and emit to provide reassurance.
๐ŸŒธ If possible, scatter a few yummy treats in the carrier (and bring along a few yummy ones for their visit into the clinic)
๐ŸŒธ Drape the carrier with a familiar towel to reduce visibility to scary things (and other pets/dogs) outside of the carrier.
๐ŸŒธ Place the carrier in a secure spot when travelling in the car (such as in the footwell or strapped onto the back seat).
๐ŸŒธ Make sure to support your carrier carefully when transporting your cat (keeping the carrier level and supporting both the top handle and the base to prevent excessive movement).
๐ŸŒธ You can train your cat to become familiar with the carrier at home (see below!)

๐Ÿค” What about medications for travelling and visits?
๐ŸŒธ For some cats, travelling to the clinic can be extremely stressful despite our efforts to improve their experience. Some cats can feel extremely nauseous during car visits (which can make them fearful when at the clinic), other cats can feel intense levels of anxiety (with some shutting down during their visit or becoming heightened and aggressive). We often use prescription medications for our cat visitors (and those staying in hospital) to help them relax and feel less nauseous. If you're unsure or have any questions, our vet team are more than happy to help discuss medications that may be right for your feline friend.

๐ŸกWhat about when your cat comes home from a visit to the clinic? (Including returning home after an anaesthetic or procedure)
๐ŸŒธ Don't overwhelm your cat with overt attention from other animals or people
๐ŸŒธ Keep them in their own room with adequate food, water and a comfortable bed (this is really important for our cats recovering after a procedure or anaesthetic).
๐ŸŒธ A few hours or day after returning home allow your cat to gradually interact with their friends and around the home (unless they are under vet direction to stay separated) - with time they will start to smell familiar to their friends and integrate back into home life.
๐ŸŒธ You can use plug-in pheromone sprays (such as Feliway) where cats spend most of their time to help provide reassurance in the home space (especially great for cats with multiple cats at home!)

We're big advocates for a happy, healthy cat - starting with their visits to come and say hello!

If you have any questions please dont hesitate to contact our team.

Additionally, here's an amazing resource for training to the carrier on the International Cat Care Website:

๐ŸŽผSWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF CHEESE (and donating to animals in neeeeed!)๐ŸŽผ

Our hearts and bellies are full from the amazing gifts and donations passed on to us from wonderful clients and AVet Health today!

Donations for Dr. Chris to take over to LUNI Lombok Indonesia included:
๐Ÿ˜ Worming and Flea treatment from AVet Health
๐Ÿ˜ Surgical hand towels from the hospital
๐Ÿ˜ Another radiology plate (to go with the X-ray unit the clinic provided the project with last year)
๐Ÿ˜ Medication donations (and flea and worming treatments) from clients
(As shown by our resident clinic cat JD - there's definitely still room for donations to Luni Lombok and the Horses of Gili!)

Gifts from our clients to the team - we never expect food supplementation for doing our jobs BUT we are always so grateful for the home grown, homemade and graciously supplied noms whenever they are dropped in!
๐Ÿง€ The most incredibe homemade Feta, Halloumi and Chilli Cheese was gifted by our lovely goat clients (after Dr. Sherrilynn and Vet nurse in training Rory helped trim their hooves!)

Donations from our clients to the hospital
๐ŸŒŸ Fleece jumpers, blankets and towels for us to keep our patients warm (and donated to local shelters and rescues to keep their animals warm too!)

If you have any questions about donations to the Luni Lombok or Horses of Gili projects - please don't hesitate to contact our team!

GRATITUDE MOMENT - WHAT ARE YOU GRATEFUL FOR?

๐ŸฅฐHere's a pause on your newsfeed to think about what you're grateful for ๐Ÿฅฐ

At the end of each day before we turn over the sign and switch off the lights, we tell each other what we enjoyed most about the day (it's become part of our evening routine and team ritual ๐ŸŒ™)

Why? Because each day in the clinic we experience some great highs and also some sad lows, so our 'what did you enjoy the most' moment brings us all together to:
๐ŸŒธ reflect on the day we've had
๐Ÿ’ช celebrate the achievements and milestones of our junior and senior team members
๐Ÿซถ be grateful for working together to move forward
๐Ÿง  help remember on the car drive home to be present for our families, friends and pets waiting at home for us

On that same note: Here is Izzy our Wednesday Veterinary Nurse Student with patient Teddy (in for his 2nd puppy vaccination). Izzy is a valued part of our Wednesday team and each week continues to build her confidence and thrive in every challenge we put in front of her ๐ŸŽ‰

A "TICKY" SITUATION!

๐Ÿ•"Bayley" is a 1 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who came in to visit us last week for head shaking and discomfort to his left ear that had come on very suddenly.

He was so well behaved for health check, but was too sore to allow Dr. Chris to have a good look down his ear canal. So it was decided Bayley needed a short anaesthetic to have a good gander at what may have been causing the trouble.

The answer?? A tick! ๐Ÿ•ท

The tick was promptly removed and the structures of the left ear were assessed (the tick had caused some inflammation down the canal, but the ear drum was still intact and there was no signs of infection - woohoo!) ๐ŸŽ‰

Whilst he was under his right ear was also checked ๐Ÿ‘€, his nails were trimmed ๐Ÿ’…and his feeties were clipped ready for Spring๐ŸŒธ!

He was the bravest boy! Pictured here with our lovely Vet Nurse in training Alyssa in recovery ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿซถ

๐ŸŒฑWith Spring upon us and the weather warming up, it is especially important to be vigilant of head shaking, tummy scratching, paw licking and ear or skin irritation. Seasonal allergies can cause ear trouble, but as our pups become more active and burrow their heads in long grasses - seeds and ticks can also be a pain too!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our team!

HELPING ANIMALS INTERNATIONALLY - HOW YOU CAN HELP

At Mundaring Veterinary Hospital we're proud to offer our help to our animals in our local community - from the patients we see to the wildlife that get brought through our doors. BUT did you know we're also passionate about helping those overseas too? ๐ŸŒ

โœˆWarming hearts overseas - THIS OCTOBER โœˆ
Each year Dr. Chris heads over to Indonesia to donate her time and expertise to help LUNI Lombok Indonesia. Luni Lombok is a fantastic organisation aimed at helping the animals of Indonesia by offering medical assistance, food, water and population control through strategic sterilisation.

Whilst in Indonesia Dr. Chris also pays a visit to the amazing Horses of Gili and donates items that are kindly donated to our clinic from the horse community. Horses of Gili is an incredible organisation run by volunteers aiming to provide working ponies and horses with the medical care, farriery and appropriate tack they need to stay happy and healthy.

So where do you come in?
Dr. Chris is heading to Indonesia again in October. If you would like to donate any items to either of the above organisations we will be packing them in a suitcase for Dr. Chris to take over (and we're hoping to swamp her baggage allowance this year!)
Donations that these organisations are currently reaching out for:
๐Ÿ›Flea/tick/worming control for cats and dogs
๐ŸดPony and cob sized halters
๐ŸดPony and cob sized bits
๐ŸดPony and cob sized bridles
๐ŸดPony and cob sized brush boots
๐ŸดPony and cob sized girths
๐ŸดPony and cob sized driving gear
IF you have any items or tack that you are no longer using and would like to donate we would be more than happy to take them over. Please feel free to drop them off at the clinic during opening hours by the 20th of September.

If you have no items to donate, that is also absolutely fine. If you would like to know more about these organisations or if you have a spare dollar to donate then feel free to head to their Facebook or webpages to learn more ๐Ÿซถ

TWO FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!

Last week ๐Ÿ Miss "Floyd" presented to us with birthing difficulties (actively straining and vocalising with no progression).

With careful assessment, an epidural and gentle manipulation Dr. Duncan was able to help the first kid through the birth canal, soon followed by the second kid.

Both kids were given a check over and bottle fed, while mum received pain relief and an injection to help pass the placenta and help with her milk let down.

All are going well at home! ๐ŸŒฑ

WILDLIFE AND WHAT TO DO

Preservation of species and the ecosystem is of great importance on a local and national scale. Most Australian Wildlife when sick, injured or orphaned wonโ€™t show obvious signs of pain, but can deteriorate rapidly if not managed appropriately.

By law, ALL wildlife are protected and are NOT to be kept as pets.

WHAT TO DO IF YOUโ€™VE FOUND A SICK, INJURED OR ORPHANED WILDLIFE:

Hereโ€™s a quick summary for Wildlife emergencies:
1. Note the EXACT location where youโ€™ve found the animal. This helps if the patient is able to be rehabilitated and released. Note a physical address OR even better a pin drop location/coordinates.
2. Approach any wildlife with care. IF youโ€™ve found a large animal/adult kangaroo they can cause serious injuries even when they are injured โ€“ we recommend CALLING a wildlife hospital regarding these patients before attempting any handling.
3. In cases of small animals - carefully place in a secure container (cardboard box with a towel/shirt) to prevent further injury. This is to provide warmth, darkness and a quiet space.
4. DO NOT offer any food or water unless instructed. These species have very specific dietary requirements and incorrect intervention can be harmful.
5. Seek urgent help from a qualified person โ€“ at your nearest Wildlife hospital OR Veterinary Clinic.

Further details and these resources were from Kenyana Wildlife Center โ€“ we recommend saving a copy of this website to your phone: https://www.kanyanawildlife.org.au/wildlife-emergency/

Weโ€™re so grateful in Perth to have a network of amazing Wildlife hospitals and rehabilitation centres that manage and care for individuals, work on rehabilitation and play an important role in maintaining these amazing species (and how they balance the local ecosystem).

DR. JESS IS ON MATERNITY LEAVE ๐Ÿซถ

With our greatest well-wishes and joy for the journey ahead, Dr. Jess is taking a step away from practice at the moment as she and her partner prepare to welcome their little one ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ง

Dr. Jess has been a familiar face at the clinic for over 5 years โ€“ working at the practice as a kennel hand and sliding easily into the role of Veterinarian once she graduated. Forever smiling and the most cool-collected-cucumber, Dr. Jess never fails to bring joy to every client, patient (of every kind) and the team๐Ÿ˜

Weโ€™re going to miss her an incredible amount BUT we know this next chapter is going to be an exciting one (and she swears its not good bye forever, but just Ta-Ta For now!)

Our vet team Dr. Chris, Dr. Duncan, Dr. Sherrilynn, Dr. Yi Jia and Dr. Olive are still available 6 days a week to service your small and large animals, and we have promised to send Dr. Jess updates from all of her clients and fur patients ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฆ™๐Ÿ‘

ANOTHER WEEK ANOTHER AMAZING STUDENT

This week we've been chuffed to have 4th year Murdoch Vet Student Megan seeing practice with us ๐Ÿค . Here's Megan pictured with Poco the Cutest mini donkey!

With a love for all animals big and small Megan has been able to see all the goings on inside the clinic and out on the road with our vets ๐Ÿš—

This week she has nailed every challenge and question we have put in front of her, and we're cheering her on to the finish line (1 year and a little bit to go!) woohoo ๐ŸŽ‰
