It’s been a long time coming, but the last ET flush is done (resulting in a positive pregnancy on Friday) so we are officially calling the 2023-24 season finished!

59 mares foaled down and 282 mares pregnant (121 of which were via embryo transfer) is no easy task, so a very big thank you to Macka, Liam and Matisse for turning up rain, hail or shine - we couldn’t have done it without you.

Thanks also to Tineke for stepping in at short notice - you were a life saver.

And to Giulia for the assist during our busiest time - you took a lot of pressure off when we needed it the most, and we are very grateful that you flew half way around the world to help out.

Finally to our clients - it was a pleasure working with you, and we look forward to creating more black dots next season!

Now for some R&R….

After an unfortunate enforced hiatus, our favorite TEG team member is back in town! Well done today Total Zensation (and of course, it goes without saying, her jockey Jason James).
Thanks to Whittlesea Plenty Valley Dressage Club, and a very special mention to Zan’s chief carrot giver and farrier extraordinaire Malcom Marks for getting our girl back on track!

The first foal of the season has arrived (oh how we love a daytime foaling!) - no more pretending there’s plenty of time before the season starts - it’s officially here!

Following a request for some pics of the (seriously adorable) Suffolk Punch babies….
Full credit must be given to their owner, who has shown incredible commitment to the preservation of this rare breed…
We foaled down 2 c**ts and 1 filly this year. Their surrogate mums (2 x standardbred and 1 x thoroughbred) are doing a super job, and the little ones are growing like mushrooms!!!

Very happy to say that the last foal has arrived and there will be no more alarms going off for the 2022-23 season!! Even happier that it’s one of our own and a filly (Frankin x Wynton x Vitalis) - I can’t wait to see how she develops and moves over the coming days.

It was a very big day at the office today!! 105 scheduled procedures, including 6 flushes - 1 negative, 5 positive (4 single embryo, and a rare triplet flush🍾).

A flush today on our Vitalis x Furst Heinrich filly presented an unfertilized oocyte (first pic ☹️). These structures are not normally released through the oviduct in the mare and found in a uterine flush, without a fertilized oocyte, and thankfully this was the case today (second pic 😁).. fingers crossed we have a So Perfect baby on the way!

Genomic testing can provide so much valuable information for breeders - I hope collaboration across sport horse stud books is not a pipe dream.

Some great news from The Netherlands 🇳🇱!!

So Lucky Zet 🍀 has his D-OC predicate!

KWPN introduced the genomic breeding values for osteochondrosis (OCD). This value indicates the genetic predisposition of the horse in relation to the current KWPN population.

The breeding value for OC gives an estimate of the genetic quality of a horse compared to the average of all KWPN horses.

Concretely: So Lucky Zet 🍀 has lower chance than average to pass OC on to his offspring. A great extra for someone who’s looking for a quality warmblood to enrich New Zealand’s or Australia’s warmblood population!

This is also great for Ballerina S, since they introduced the D-OC predicate, all her offspring passed and got the D-OC predicate! One of the reasons why it’s a good idea to X-ray your mare before breeding!

I’ve been waiting to do an end of season post….but it hasn’t quite ended yet 🙄
No complaints however, when the result is a lovely little embryo to add to the frozen collection!
It’s been a huge ET season here, with 134 embryos transferred, resulting in 114 pregnant recipients. For those interested in the frozen embryo stats, 46 embryos were frozen, of which 15 were thawed and transferred, resulting in 11 pregnant recipients.
We ran a much bigger recip herd this year than ever before, but it still wasn’t nearly enough to meet demand - apologies to those we were unable to accommodate…. We will be working hard over the coming months to ensure we are well positioned for the start of next season!

As the season winds down we are enjoying spending a little free time with some TEG youngsters… today the 2 year olds - Total Senzation (Secret x Zonik) and Total Virtue (Vitalis x Furst Heinrich) came in for a spin around the indoor. Both are daughters of working mothers Total Zensation and Total Fame, who are kicking goals in the dressage arena and the breeding barn, and we are looking forward to these girls doing the same!
