What Disco did…..
Offences 😤
💣 Leash reactivity
💣 Over excited when seeing people
💣 No impulse control when excited
💣 Jumping on people
🤯Lunging at cars when the road is wet
😤Lunging at bikes / skateboards
Pulling like a freight train
💣Over excited and jumps on dogs
Now, don’t get me wrong, Disco had great obedience when I met him, and he is a super smart boy, but it all went out the window around dogs, when on lead, or when any triggers zoomed passed.
Skip to today. We have combined private lessons with regular Trek & Trains. Disco walks beautifully on lead, is now able to work well around other dogs. He is still alert with the wet road and cars, but no lunging, and his impulse control and ability to work around Indie is 😃🥹🔥
How we got here.
✅ Fine tuned his obedience with clear markers at home, low distraction
✅ Ensured their was a clear consequence (both good and negative) for his actions
✅ Equipment change and conditioned the ecollar to improve already known behaviours including his recall
✅ Ensured his loose leash walking was 🔥
✅ Fulfilled his biological and breed specific needs with tug and flirt pole
✅ Slowly introduced and worked around said triggers to desensitise and counter condition
✅ Worked with my dog to help him with his impulse control and obedience around another dog.
I’m so proud of the progress with this guy. We still have some work on his jumping on people at home, it’s a very well rehearsed behaviour therefore has been reinforced to the max making it harder to undo.
So happy to be on this journey way with you buddy. 🐕

What Gets Rewarded Gets Repeated!
That’s both the good behaviour, and the unwanted. Let me explain. 🧠
When it comes to dog training, a simple truth holds: what we reward, our dogs will repeat. Whether it’s a behaviour we encourage or one we’d prefer to avoid, if it’s rewarded, it will likely show up again. 🤯
When we catch our dogs doing something we like—perhaps sitting calmly or responding to a command—and we reward that, we’re sending a message: this is valuable, do it more often.
✅ Over time, the dog will begin to offer this behaviour more frequently because they’ve learned it pays off.
‼️ But the same holds true for unwanted behaviours. If a behaviour is self-rewarding, like barking for attention or pulling on the leash, the dog will continue because they’re still getting something out of it—even if we’re not aware. This is why it’s so important to actively prevent these unwanted behaviours from becoming habits.
🙋♀️ It’s up to us to set good habits. This means staying aware, involved, and ready to reward behaviours we want to see more often. Equally important, we need to intervene when our dogs practise unwanted behaviours, so they don’t reinforce themselves and turn into lasting habits. Have you taught your dog “no”. They won’t automatically know it, it’s something we teach, and I can help you with that. YES, it’s ok to say “No” to your dog…
Finally, remember that some behaviours need regular reinforcement to stick. Just like a battery, these behaviours can “drain” if not recharged with rewards.
Others, once learned, may last longer without constant reinforcement. Being mindful of which behaviours need more attention will help your dog thrive in their learning journey!
I had the initial consult and lesson with Tommy & Ralph a couple of weeks ago, and they took everything on board and implemented it right away into their lifestyle and training. And the pay off with good behaviou
🐕 I often get called to house holds who have 2 dogs, with one of them the main focus, and it’s usually the younger dog.
The old dog is “perfect” and “never caused these problems”.
Sound familiar? 🤨
Now, older dogs are typically chill, and don’t cause drama, and are happy to lounge around all day. We don’t need to limit their freedom, or implement new structure, they have learned the lay of the land, and earned their freedom.
Now, pups, new dogs to the household, tend to push the boundaries (if there are any) and get into mischief because they have too much freedom too soon, and make bad decisions, and cause headaches.
When a dog is given too much freedom before they are ready, they will undoubtedly make bad decisions. Not to tick you off, it’s just that if they can, and they enjoy it, they will!
🏠 Management is the first step to stopping bad habits before they occur, and this comes in the form of crate training, puppy pens, and limited access to all the fun stuff without supervision.
The first thing people usually say is…. “Will the puppy or new dog be ok if the old dog is still free ranging around the house?”.
Umm, yeh, it’s called structure and they will be ok. They may have a little tantrum at first, not all do, some thrive from the clarity structure provides!
It is good for dogs to have independence from each other, and you, and to see that not everything revolves around them.
The same comes with walks, if one dog has earned their freedom to be off leash where permitted, or walk more casually on a flexi or long line, while the pup learns to walk with you, THAT’S OK!
Then you might swap and puppy gets long line exploring while the older dog walks with you.
Understanding rules & boundaries will set your dog up for success, grow your bond, and give the dog ultimately more freedom in their life because they will have a better foundation!
Let me know if this sounds familiar, and if this helps?!
