Teaching Loose Leash Walking.
Little puppy session of loose leash walking hot tips.
π§ Donβt overcomplicate it!!!
π Donβt talk a lot.
πΆ When puppy checks out and walks ahead you turn around. And repeat!
β° Short sessions (5 mins) reinforce with good when puppy turns with you.
π Keep distractions low and only slowly increase when your pup or dog is ready!
You can use little food rewards when puppy turns with you and doesnβt hit the end of the lead, but I like to keep it really simple at the start and puppy will soon pick it up.

π€― Does your dog not listen to you?
Maybe you just arenβt speaking in a way that your dog understands!
Or maybe you are speaking too much!!
I see soo many posts about people saying, βI say no and my dog just doesnβt listenββ¦
First, have you taught your dog what βnoβ means? Have you taught your dog what βyesβ means?
π° Hereβs a news flash, dogs donβt know English! They learn words by repeating them over and over, and the same outcome from that word over and over. Dogs can then start to understand. π§
We use commands, markers, clickers and reward systems to best communicate with our dogs. But only when we take the time to teach them these things!!
π€·ββοΈWhen we learn to communicate with our dogs, everyoneβs lives are better!!

π§ I am big on educating my clients about the power of clear communication with our dogs. Markers are a crucial tool π οΈ in our training approach, guiding your dog through the learning process with precision. β
π€ **What are Markers?**Markers are signals that indicate to your dog the outcome of their behavior. They help your dog understand:- When a reward is coming- When to continue their current behaviour or position - When the behaviour is complete- When they arenβt quite right- When they have done something wrongAnd many more, but these are the great basics to start with. βοΈ Using markers consistently creates a clear and predictable learning environment for your dog, making training more effective and enjoyable for both of you.Want to learn more about markers and how they can improve your relationship with your dog and improve your training ? Your dog will love you for it! Donβt let a little rain stop you, get out and have fun with your dog.
Heres a hot tip you may not know;
When you hire a professional dog trainer, and they come to your house to help with a behavioural issue, you will 9 times out of 10 still have work to do after that lesson to solve, improve or stop the behavioural issue π€―
We will give you the knowledge and how to, and come back to follow up and help out when needed.
AND, if you put in the effort, like this amazing client, you get RESULTS!!!!
I am passionate about helping dogs live a better life in our human society, and when the dogs are happy, and fulfilled and relaxed, and have clarity and guidance of whatβs expected, guess what, your life gets a whole lot better as well.
So proud of these guys.

From explosive to engaged.
β
Let your dog problem solve!!
Sooo many people do too much for their dogs. They do it with the best intentions, but it can limit the potential of your dog.
Allowing a dog to problem solve for itself can have lots of benefits.
Itβs important to have patience, and allow the dog to work through some problems on their own.
This example is a simple one, and it happens often.
Instead of unraveling the dog if they go around a pole the wrong way, let them work it out. They will work through a little fear, uncertainty & frustration.
If we can allow them to work through these small things safely, then they will be more capable of dealing with unexpected, more serious problems that arise.
Other benefits;
π§ Mental stimulation: Problem-solving tasks engage a dog's mind, keeping them mentally active and preventing boredom.
πͺπΌ Independence: Allowing dogs to figure things out on their own promotes independence and self-reliance.
π Confidence building: Successfully solving problems boosts a dog's confidence and self-esteem.
πΎ Natural behavior: Problem-solving is a natural behavior for dogs, so allowing them to engage in it fulfills their instincts.
π€ Stress reduction: Problem-solving activities can provide a healthy outlet for a dog's energy and reduce stress or anxiety.
π€© Development of skills: Dogs learn valuable skills such as decision-making, adaptability, and persistence through problem-solving tasks.
If we can allow dogs to figure some things out for themselves, when itβs safe and appropriate, we are allowing them to fulfill their unlimited potential and grow their confidence!
Next time your dog is in a situation where you could help them, or you can give it a minute and just allow them to problem solve, trust that your dog can figure it out, and give them time to do so.

Do you snuffle?? π
If you donβt have a snuffle mat you shouldβ¦.. And if you donβt know why, and what it is good for, well, let me tell you!πββοΈ
Snuffle mats offer mental stimulation π§ and engage a dogβs natural instincts by encouraging them to use their nose π to search for treats or kibble hidden within the fabric.
This provides a fun and interactive activity that can reduce boredom, alleviate stress, and slow down fast eaters. Additionally, it can be a helpful tool for dogs with anxiety or those needing low-impact exercise.
Also a perfect activity in this Gold Coast heat! βοΈ

Your dogs obedience skills and behaviours are just like batteries. πͺ« You need to keep them charged so that they work, or they will slowly slowly start to lose their power, so we need to ensure we top them up!
What do I mean by that? π€·ββοΈ
To have reliable obedience behaviours we need to ensure that we are topping up the βchargeβ by randomly rewarding the behaviour to keep the dog enthusiastic, and reliably complying when asked to do something.
Now, when your dog is first learning how to do something, we want to reward their efforts every single time! π
This ensures that they stay motivated, and understand what is expected.
Then, when that behaviour is reliable, meaning 99% of the time when you ask, they do, then we can start to ease off the rewards a little and provide them a little more randomly. We want to Keep the dog guessing, we donβt want to just stop π Then they lose interest pretty quick. But, like a gambler, if we keep randomly giving them a win or treat, it keeps them motivated!
That is a very very simplified explanation, and there is more to the exact way that we do introduce randomly rewarding, but you get the idea.
We need to practice our obedience and have the correct reward schedule for our dogs current level to ensure this kind of enthusiasm, even after 3 weeks of not seeing the big guy π€

Nothing in life is free (NILIF)
You read that right. Nothing in life is free. π
If you have a dog πthat has bratty, pushy behaviour. π³Demand barks, any general obedience issues, try this.
Make your dog work for every single thing that it gets from you π€
What do I mean by work? That can be anything you want.
For example;
- Food time, rather than dumping it in a bowl and putting it on the floor while Fido scoffs into it on the way down, try hand feeding.
This builds value in you. It doesnβt have to take a long time, but if you are time poor, then have your dog sit, and give you eye contact before you put the bowl down. Have your dog wait for a βeatβ command before it digs in.
- Before entering or exiting doors, get eye contact and have your dog wait for a release cue.
- Ask for a behaviour like sit, or down before you throw the ball or toy. For extra points have a release cue that means they are allowed to leave that behaviour to get the toy!!
Anything that you can add a little βjobβ for your dog to do, BEFORE they get something that they want, will help them build self control, build your relevance in the picture, and teach your dog not to be a pushy brat to get what they want. π
Change the picture, good behaviour gets the goods.
Try it consistently for a week and see what a difference it makes!
Drop me a message and let me know π
In this video we are having a fun Sunday on the beach, so you can incorporate this into any activity.
I ask for a behaviour (down) and then the release which you may not here is TSSST, which is Indies release cue to get the toy, in this case her rubber stick.
Give it a go &
Happy training
