Our job gives us soooo much pleasure. Today Cam & Kristy came down to find Cam his perfect budgie family that would be happy to share a shoulder with Cam in his wheelchair. It's the Scaly Mite Season - Check Your Budgies Now!
Although scaly and feather mites can strike at any time, an explosion in numbers can follow a long spell of high humidity. Be aware that mites can cause extreme disfigurement and beak deformity, and budgies can lose the ability to eat, resulting in death. It can affect some budgies and not others, and budgies deficient in vitamin A are far more susceptible to the infection. Please look at the photos; these are pretty advanced examples, and it is vital to catch the infection as early as possible when successful treatment is easy to achieve. To prevent feather mites, birds should be sprayed every six weeks with Avitrol, and Soluvite D should be added to the drinking water every other week to resist scaly mites. To treat scaly mites, Avimec should be painted on the bird's cere, beak, legs and feet (and any areas around the face where the scale can be seen). It is advisable to spray the bottom of the cage with a bird-safe cage cleaner simultaneously.

Budgie Health Warning - This is Important!

The problem season for budgies is upon us. Our treatment rooms at ‘Just Budgies’ can advise on many of the most common health issues you may experience with Budgies. Check the following to see if any apply to your budgies.

Scaly Mite
A build-up of what appears to be scale on the feet, legs, beak, cere and surrounding areas. Scaly mites are microscopic mites that cause skin problems like 'scaly face', 'scaly leg' and 'tassel foot' by burrowing under the skin in budgies and other bird species. Treatment is relatively straightforward using Avimec, which you can purchase from here (ours is complete with an essential application brush). Brush on and repeat, if necessary, a week later. Alternatively, treatment at our premises is free of charge.

Coccidiosis
Caused by the parasite Coccidia, it is often first seen as diarrhoea, weight loss, loss of condition, and fluffing up of feathers; look out for messy bums or runny p**p in the bottom of the cage. It is usually contracted from contaminated food and water containers or cages that have yet to be kept clean and disinfected. Treatment is usually successful if treated early on with Coccivet for 7 days in their water supply. Coccivet is available from us.

Mites & Lice
It is often first noticed when budgies continuously groom or scratch themselves and sometimes when excessive feather loss occurs. Treatment is simple: Avitrol with a puff under each wing and one under the belly of the bird. Treatment should be ongoing and every three months to prevent infection. Alternatively, treatment at our premises is free of charge.

Feather Loss & Loss Of Condition
Budgies can lose their condition at various times of the year, which can be associated with seasonal moulting, leading to vitamin deficiency. This is easily treated with Soluvite D, which contains 12 essential vitamins and boosted D3. It should be given every other week to keep budgies at optimum condition. Soluvite D is available from here.

Worms
Worms can infect budgies in numerous ways, but they are easily treated and should be re-treated every three months to prevent infection. To do this, Avitrol Plus Worm Syrup should be added to the water for 24 hours. This will flush the worms from the bird’s system. Avitrol Plus is available from here.

Disinfectant
If you have any of the above issues, cages should be sprayed regularly with a bird-safe disinfectant such as Aristopet Cage Cleaner, which can be purchased here.

Overweight
This is a real problem for budgies, as they suffer from Fatty Liver Disease. Seeds MUST be low-fat diet seeds at all times and must only be part of the balanced diet they need. Their diet MUST contain fresh, finely chopped veggies and protein (we use hard-boiled egg). The low-fat seed is almost impossible to find in shops that want to sell you low-quality, stale seed loaded with cheap, high-fat canary seed, so we now have a mix specially formulated by Dr Peter Wilson B.V.Sc. M.A.C.V.Sc Avian Vet at Currumbin. It is available in half-kilo tubs that can be easily stored in the freezer to keep it fresh; we post 4 pots minimum to your home at just $7 a pot, including post (8 pots get 2 free cage toys in the pack). So, in summary, the above are some common problems that can be experienced with budgies, and they are all straightforward to avoid and treat. We have put together our ‘Absolutely Essential Budgie Medicine & Maintenance Pack’ consisting of:-

The grass in the video is loved by budgies; pick it up and hang it in the cage to see instant action from your budgies. If you cut it with a stalk, you can lay it in a plastic bag and freeze it for when there is no wild seed to be picked. Please ensure that the grass has not been treated with weedkillers or pesticides, and don't pick it too close to a road for your safety and to ensure has not been contaminated by road spray from vehicles. Budgie holiday warning. Several customers buying budgies recently are buying to replace budgies that have had 'accidents' while they have been away on holiday. This is stressful for the family concerned as well as for the person who was looking after the budgies. Please remember that we have a wonderful holiday service here at Whispering Pines, where your budgies spend their time by the pool in the daytime and our secure holiday room at night. It is inexpensive and has additional advantages with any work required for budgies, such as nail and beak checks, mite and lice treatment, worm treatment and handling issues, which can be dealt with at super low cost. Our holiday service for one or two budgies in their own cage is just $7 a night, $40 a week or $140 a month (minimum charge of $20) with all food included.
