Group training session with the ex-reactive dogs.

17/01/2023

Tango's first day at the Daycare after a "reactive dog" training session. All he needed is to trust the humans who is handling him and then, he is a relaxed doggy. No need to stress, there is a human "referee" in the pen.

12/11/2022

This a typical continuation of desensitising reactive dogs, after a session in real situation, with the owner at the dog park. After realising that, we , humans, are capable of "controling" the environement, including passing dogs, the learning dog is introduced to a bunch of doggies who are here to have fun. He will learn then that other dogs are not necessary aggressive. They can also be friendly and even fun. He will learn to speak dog.

Snow came back today (that was expected as we are in winter. I’m allowed to do dad jokes) Slowly changing the way she perceives her environment. She trusts us enough so that she doesn’t need to fight in the daycare. She knows that we, humans are in charge of her safety here and she doesn’t need to be reactive. She’s not ready to play yet but that is work in progress.

In this walk I had 3 “ex-reactive “ dogs who first did a one on one session, then joined the doggy daycare.

Ex reactive dogs, group training session

Wolfy, at the intersection of 2 very different paths for him and his humans.
Why doggy daycare? Wolfy arrived at Pets Wonderland, not knowing body language, not knowing how to 'read" other dogs, and not able to recognize "I want to play " from "Give me some space". So, in this video, he clearly shows: "I want to play but I'm scared of you at the same time." At first, he engages in a friendly manner but then gets a bit scared/snappy.
For an inexperienced owner, this could be interpreted as "My dog is aggressive" and will then create a negative energy, ambient, that will influence the dog, reinforcing his scared/snappy reactions. We then have a reactive dog that will start to lunge at other dogs too, so that the owner removes him from that scary situation, creating a reinforcement of the idea that other dogs are a threat.
Luckily, Wolfy was brought to the daycare where, under supervision, he learns to speak dog and recognize friendly posture to neutral or "don't mess with me" attitudes. We then, give feedback to the owner on his progress and potential reactions on the street. During his walks, it's up to the owner then, to show assertiveness and gain Wolfy's trust that his human is in control of the environment and that he doesn't need to react to other dogs.

Every single time a people-aggressive dog launches towards a human and that human retreats in fear, the unwanted behavior is reinforced. Have your dog trained as soon as possible.
This is Oden. What I did with Oden is take him to the most challenging place for a reactive dog, the dog beach. And made him realize that actually, it is a fun place to be. Where the humans and the dogs are just having fun and not to be worried about and the run on the beach is the ultimate reward. I am reshaping his perception of the world from scary to fun.

01/02/2022

Oden's video 3/3 There. All done. I'm using the lasso from the Halti, that I grabbed at the base of Oden's mouth so that I can control his potential bites. I did it as soon as we started walking and Oden fixated himself on dogs instead of me. I use his reactivity to dogs to switch positions with the owner and take control of the walk. From there I help Oden to realize that the dogs are not threatening, just curious. Oden sees me from then as protection more than as a danger. I reinforce with lots of praises every encounter with other dogs. The more encounters we have the more Odens feels comfortable with me and accepts the proximity of the other dogs. I took him then for a short run on the leash on the beach to give him a very positive and pleasant feeling for that training session. It is quite rewarding, as a trainer to go for a run with a massive dog that wanted to destroy you like 30 minutes before.
This is still a work in progress, Oden is only starting to accept other humans (me) than his owner's family. The owner has to learn from all this now, in terms of confidence and controlling Oden.

01/02/2022

Oden's video 2/3 Oden was brought out of the car. I will use the Halti, as it is an amazing training tool when used properly. It has a lasso that allows me to control Oden's mouth when I will take control of him. Oden lets me know that he still has some hesitations and gives me a nasty stare and a good growl.
DO NOT TRY THIS if you are not used to handling aggressive dogs Please find a dog trainer that is confident with aggressive dogs.

Oden's video 1/3 This is Oden, a People scared-aggressive 50kg+ Bullmastiff cross.
When he was 1 Oden had a bad experience. And then with covid isolation and busy life, Oden has been sheltered from the outside world for a year. He did develop a very aggressive, scared-based behavior since then.
To be able to help a people aggressive dog and his owner, the trainer (me), must first control the dog and build a bond with him.

I'm quite upset with myself as I completely messed up the footage of the first session. On That day, I managed to walk Oden for more than one hour, but even though he was under control and I was the first stranger able to touch him for more than a year, I could still sense, at the end of the session, a bit of apprehension from Oden towards me. I knew that he would regress a bit for our next session.
This is that 2nd session.
There will be 3 videos of that session.
This is the first one.

Harlem was people and dog reactive. He is 5 years old and haven't been walked or socialized during the last 4 years due to his increasingly higher reactivity. I used the Halti to control him first then to build a trust relationship during a short walk.
I then needed to increase his trust in me, make him understand that I'm able to control the world around us and that he doesn't need to be reactive. Rebuild a positive image of the word around him, was done by a walk to the dog beach. I was proactive, asking to sit and look at me, ignore the dogs. Praises and rewards when not reactive and asking him to sit and behave and look at me, as soon as I was seeing any signs of him focusing on a passing dog. At the end of the session Harlem was walking pass other dogs, ignoring them. I did manage to reshape the way he was perceiving other dogs.
So Harlem did reach a new step in his progression. That is learning to talk dog. At this stage he kind of knows now that dogs are not a threat. So, under strict supervision and with a muzzle on his face in case of miscommunication, he is facing the pack today. We starting with a pack walk to make him feel that he is part of that pack. That is 3 walkers with 5 dogs each. At the end of the walk he enters in the daycare with positive attitude as most of those dogs were with him on the walk.
Not bad for a first day. Harlem will probably never really mix with other dogs, wrestling and playing like most do in this daycare but at least he does know now that here, they are not a threat, that he can relax and do his own stuff.

Snow and Cookie on the same walk. 2 reactive dogs that you will find in our previous videos. 50 chaotic metres, then a walk in the park.

Kibbles do not "clean" the teeth, it's the opposite, they contain carbs, which are a base food for bad bacterias, sticking on your dog's teeth.

MYTH + it’s time we addressed this.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤯 Vets and pet store retailers will tell you all about the dental diets + chews on the market, and how they clean the teeth and prevent plaque and tartar build up. Sadly, this just isn’t true. In fact, kibble is one of the biggest causes of dental disease.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍪 A dog consuming dry dog food to keep their teeth clean is equivalent to humans eating Jatz crackers without brushing or flossing. Unlike humans, your dog’s jaw does not move from side to side - they simply crunch and swallow. There is no teeth cleaning action from this, specifically at the gum line where it really matters.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🦠 Kibble is also made up of unnaturally high amounts of carbohydrates + starches that convert into simple sugars, which grow and harbour bad bacteria inside your dog’s mouth. Dogs are unable to break down carbohydrates in their mouth as they lack the salivary enzyme, amylase. This essentially attracts plaque and tartar to stick to their teeth and gums. This is how bad doggy breath starts!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🦷 Most dogs that are fed kibble from puppyhood end up having a dental clean by the age of one year and dental disease by the age of three years. A recent study by Australian Vet Dr Tom Lonsdale demonstrated that raw fed dogs showed signs of dental diseases when fed with kibble for only 17 days.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🤔 So, what can you do instead to maintain your dog’s pearly whites?
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥩 1. Feed a balanced species-appropriate diet that is high in meat and low in carbohydrates i.e. cooked or raw. Raw meat contains specific live enzymes that destroy any dangerous bacteria forming in your dog’s mouth.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🪥 2. Brush your dog’s teeth. This may be harder for pet parents who have never desensitised their pups to brushing but it’s worth trying. Simply use coconut oil on your finger or a gentle toothbrush and away you go.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🦴 Raw meaty bones - nature’s toothbrush. They are perfectly abrasive enough to scrape any plaque or tartar that is hanging around. If you’re unsure what type of bone, pick one that is suited to your dog’s size and chewing style. You can source most bones from the supermarket, butcher, pet store or raw dog food supplier. Always supervise your dog when feeding bones and avoid weight bearing bones like marrow bones.

💊 4. Dental supplements - there is a specific dental seaweed product that you can add daily into your dog’s food for maintenance of oral hygiene. You can buy online or from some pet stores.

👆🏼 Keep in mind that if your dog already has bad plaque and tartar build up, you must get a dental clean done at your vet’s first. Dental and gum disease is often overlooked yet is so painful and can be very serious for dogs. Please keep on top of this!

🤓 Like everything I advocate, I ask you to consider - What. Makes. Sense. Question everything!

Today we have Snow, who wanted to kill any dogs before her training session on Friday. In one session, she learned to trust her humans to deal with the stress and to revert to the nice puppy state she once was. She as no clues about communication with other dogs yet and that’s why she is in the daycare now. She was a puppy farm dog, stuck in a cage. Now she is restarting a new loving life. Then, we have Billie on her first session as well.

Don’t touch my face.

19/11/2021

Bayley is at the end of his aggressive training week in the doggy daycare and he became a very good boy meanwhile he doesn’t like to have anything in his face so it’s not just about dogs. Even me is trusted trainer, I’ve got difficulties to touch his face. This is something to remember when we take him for a walk.

Bailey the German Sheppard is learning to walk with the pack on his second day at the daycare. His aggression/ reactivity is gone by now.

18/11/2021

We are posting a series of videos about Bailey, a German Sheppard who was extremely reactive after being stuck at home due to operations on his legs and Covid. You can see the evolution. I did not video the first walk. (I just didn't, I was focus in helping Bailey). The walk was done at the dog beach in Palm Beach. At the beginning of the walk Bailey was foaming from the month, launching, and wanting to kill every single dog. By the end of the walk, half an hour later, we had already Bailey under control. What he still needed was desensitisation. That's why we kept Bailey for a week at the doggy daycare, at Pets wonderland Currumbin
