Today we were working on some revision with a reset.
Mapping the hoof to give basal surface area in a ratio 50/50 dorso palmer of CoR, on a big horse that is fetlock varus.
Fitting the toe and coronary band shape as it mirrors the coffin bone.
The shoe has a slight roll between the toe nails, to allow the desired ratio without ra**ng away the wall at the toe.
The SADP and the suspensory ligament is what is holding up the skeleton. ( Prof. Pollitt)
The largest surface area of laminae are in the front half of the hoof ✌️

New horse on the roster .
Doubles as a Gatton Heavy Horse Competition practice as well.
Lucky we only had to make the fronts at the horse as gas forge and O'Dwyer number 2 anvil and 17 inches is hard work 💪✌️

Today mark's the end of my 35th year as a full-time farrier.
Fitting i had the privilege of shoeing one of my favourite horse's last job this afternoon.
He wears heartbar shoe's x 4.
And Muggins and myself made some draft shoe's together for a new client tomorrow.
What a journey.
Use it or lose it ✌️💪

You can see atrophied frog's from the constant moisture.
He is fetlock varus in his right fore.

Mitchell Willoughby Dwyer is home from his week on apprentice scholarship from the Professional Farriers and Blacksmiths Association of Queensland to Perth, with the Western Australian Farriers Association 2024.
I'm really happy he had the opportunity.
The more you travel, the more you can learn.
Progressive, if you will .

He's back practising tonight , some of the techniques he learned under the tutelage of Michael Saunders, Phil Smailes, Josh Smailes, Dillon Smith and Judge/clinician Grant Watt
(Scotland)

And thanks from both of us to Mrs Amanda Saunders for looking after him like he was your own , he's back to work fit as a fiddle 🙏

Quick and dirty 7/8×7/16 lateral extension concave for this older horse.
When wear exceeds growth, we need shoe's.
Has a compromised sacroiliac and waddles behind instead of pushing off the medial toe.
Trying to limit slide phase with added traction. Also support the lateral at landing and loading.

When you get to travel and spend time competing and talking with your peers, you continue to grow within the trade.
My good friend Carlo Montagna and I discussed at length how the width of stock can help distribute concussion in relation to the distal border of P3.
When shod around balance perimeters.
1x3/8 looks good on this chap ✌️

Beautiful Grand Prix school master changed ownership some time ago.
Since been diagnosed as a Cushings and EMS horse after unfortunately having systemic laminitis.
Dr Greg Baldwin recommended heartbar shoe's all round with pour in material for caudal support and set toes to allow ease of unrolement.
He's since been placed on medication.
The xrays were taken before shoeing and at 5 weeks from previous.
Fingers crossed 🤞

Hi all,
I am still travelling taking in new idea's and recovering from the World Championship in Canada.
Mitchell and I have the pleasure of Nikki Mccasland travelling with him whilst on holidays from USA for the next fortnight.
Nikki is a very accomplished farrier.
She holds her CJF, AWCF and ASF
Also an examiner for the AFA and FITS organisations.
I am really happy for her to help import knowledge into Mitch through his apprenticeship.
I would also like to thank Sam Durham for the past 2 weeks. He thoroughly enjoyed his time with you 🙏

We've had a great week competing at the World Championship for 2024.
The knowledge sharing opportunities by competing are not just based on the farrier and forging skills under the clock and judge's.
There are numerous discussions of different disciplines we all cover in our respective area's.
The ground surface in particular comes upfront in most conversations.
Spruce is highest level grass showjumping in Canada, if not the world.
We learned from Charlie Heathcott that they use a mixture of five different grasses on the competing arena's, pre fertilised, as the short growing season due to snow, means three months average to get tip top by September.
We discussed caulkin sizes and placement for best performance on the grasses.
Moisture content and grass length.
There was very minimal foot hole's or cupping cut into the surface anywhere around the jumping surface.

Unfortunately social media trend's push "breakover " as the holy grail based on a lateral xray at rest. Which is a very small part of dynamic function.

In the real world on highest level showjumpers, 1.65 metres start in the Grand Prix, we work on traction for the safety of the horse and rider.
The first picture is of one of the lower level arena's.
Just as much care goes into the surface preparation as the main arena we had our group photo on.
We start on balance perimeters from landmarks on the individual horse hooves, setting each individual up for optimum performance. Front and rear.
No foot, no horse.
The horse's being shod at this competition are superstar's. One competing at France Olympics last month for Canada 🇨🇦
In the word's of one of the owners at Spruce Meadows
" The best horse's are shod by the best farrier's, anywhere in the world 🌎 "
Discussions promote knowledge and idea sharing, whether forging or shoeing.
Close minds are empty of improvement 💪

15 years old lesson horse.
Staked his coronary band when he was 5 months of age.
Lovely owner same for that whole time.
Finally split open from excess moisture and bacterial invasion of the whiteline at base level I believe. And grazing is easy on fertile ground.
Second visit was couple of days ago, and we needed a shoeing plan.
Using a glued on hoof cast to try and stabilise the hoof capsule.
Packing with Stewart Special Sauce to stop bacterial progress.
Thanks to Stockmans Supplies for overnight supply of the wonderful products 💪
Got a sneaky Spruce Meadows practice in after work ✌️

Very proud to report on Mitchell Willoughby Dwyer results from competing at Ekka 2024 in the Novice class.
He won the Shoe forging class.
Minor places in the Blacksmiths and Speed forging class.
I was very impressed with his shoeing job on one really manky club foot.
Although no place in the shoeing class, many tradesman would be unhappy to draw such a tricky hoof. That's part and parcel of competing.
In the field we don't get the option to swap out either. We'll done young man. I am proud of your journey.
Congratulations to all the competitors, committee and judge's.
And the sponsors, who make these events possible.

Educational post.

The warm air and rain means spring has sprung.
Higher levels of sugar in the grass are very detrimental to all, especially Cushings and EMS horse's. Please be vigilant about your equine management.
As a farrier, we can feel when horse's have an aggravated stomach.
Due to where the stomach is placed inside the horse, when they have an upset gut from changed Ph levels, they are often don't like us lifting the right hoof up or forwards.
They can also show discomfort on the right rein when ridden. Jacking up or refusing movement. Bad cases, even bucking out of character.
I have had clients ask me to check the right hoof for pain, when most time's the horse is trying to get away from the aggravation in the stomach on that side.
A simple urine Ph test can help indicate acid levels from the excess suger in the diet from the flush of green grass.
Also scoping by a veterinarian can lead to gut medication to help in extreme cases.
Food for thought.
They can't tell us where the pain is, although they can indicate it to us.
