Proving that age has no limits are Tatum and Venazza. These 2 ladies were here today for senior health checks....luckily both are doing great. At almost 14 years and 16 years old, we think they deserve the Super Golden Oldie award ππΈππ

Lets talk about Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (Cat AIDS) πββ¬πββ¬
What is it?
FIV is a viral infection of cats that causes a deficiency in the immune system. The virus belongs to the same family of viruses as the HIV virus but humans cannot be infected with the cat virus.
How are cats infected?
The virus lives in the blood of infected cats and is passed onto other cats usually via a cat bite. Infected cats may appear healthy for many years, but as the immune system becomes weaker they may develop chronic infections and other illness. There is no treatment or cure for FIV.
Are there tests available for FIV?
There is a blood test currently in use to detect positive cats. It will NOT detect disease in recently infected cats.
How can AIDS be prevented?
Keeping your cat indoors will go a long way to safeguarding against infection because most cats are infected during a cat fight. Cats that spend a lot of time outdoors, especially at night, are most at risk.
A vaccine has been developed to provide further protection against infection in at-risk cats:
ο± The vaccine is given as a course of 3 injections, 2 to 4 weeks apart followed by annual boosters.
ο± The vaccine is approximately 80% effective against the viral serotype currently affecting Australian cats.
ο± Due to the long βsilent phaseβ of the disease, adult cats require a blood test prior to vaccination to check if they have already been infected.
If you would like any further information, or would like to book a vaccination against FIV, please give us a call on 5594 0533

Check out this little-BIG guy! Our student vet nurse Tayla spotted him out the back of the clinic! Weβre not sure how long he was hanging out but thought he might need a hand getting back on to a tree!
We think he may be called a Eurycnema Goliath or commonly known as a Goliath stick insect π
