Chickens have some pretty clever ways of beating the winter chill, but they may still need your help. Like all birds, chickens use their feathers for insulation by fluffing them up and trapping the air. But for the times when nature is hard to predict, good pet care involves providing appropriate refuge.

❄️Insulation❄️
In cold parts of Australia, you could insulate your chicken coop with tree branches, cardboard, or straw. Care should be taken if hay or straw is used for insulation, as these can become infested with mold and vermin and carry chicken parasites. Also, remember to keep the insulation tidy. Keeping the coop clean and dry is essential as most bacteria, fungi, and parasites thrive in warm, moist environments.

☀️Warmer climates☀️
If you live in one of the warmer Australian states then you probably won’t need to install insulation in your chicken coop at all. Open, ventilated coops are more important. Learn more tips on coop setup on our website, or alternatively, visit your local Greencross Vets for expert advice.

Winter is here! We feel it's going to be a super cold one, and chances are if you are feeling cold your furry friend is too.

Here are some ways to keep your pet warm in the Winter:

💚Keep your pet inside
💚Provide a warm, soft, elevated bed
💚Warm coats are great for pets that are senior, small or have thin coats
💚Move your guinea pigs hutch inside the house or garage
💚Provide extra straw and hay so small pets can burrow and hide
💚Keep all bedding dry
💚Wrap a loose blanket over your pet, but don’t tuck them in. They still need to be able to move away from it if they overheat
💚Walk your furry friend during the day when it’s not as cold

Bonnie the 16 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy came in to see us yesterday for Base Narrow Canine surgery.

This is where deciduous teeth grow abnormally or on an angle and causes pain, discomfort and sometimes trauma to the hard palate of the mouth.

Base narrow canines are surgically extracted and over time, allows for the adult teeth to come through normally and prevents further trauma to the mouth.

We are wishing wee Bonnie a speedy recovery after being such a brave girl yesterday! 🦷💛

Did you know that dogs & cats also have baby teeth just like humans do? 🦷 👶🏼

These teeth are called deciduous teeth and often fall out around 4 - 6months of age. However, sometimes they don’t and are referred to as retained deciduous teeth.

It is recommended to have these retained teeth surgically removed as they can cause abnormal alignment of the jaw, exacerbate dental disease & prevent the adult teeth from coming through normally.

Here you can see a retained puppy canine in an 8 month old Pug. In the next image, the tooth has been extracted and a small suture has been placed which will dissolve overtime. Now the adult canine is able to erupt naturally without the deciduous tooth in the way! 🤍

Gorgeous boy Bowie was a little nervous for his lump removal procedure last week but was such a trooper for our vets & nurses 🖤

He sat still for his blood collection, IV placement and recovered like a dream from his anaesthetic. Bowie’s dad even got him a soft inflatable collar so he wouldn’t have to wear the dreaded plastic cone 🥺

We love these sooky Staffies and are always a pleasure to have in clinic 🐶
