πŸŒŠπŸ’§πŸŽπŸ΄ Keen for some Summer Swims?? So is your horse!! πŸŒŠπŸ’§πŸŽπŸ΄

Horses are exceptional swimmers. As obligate nasal breathers, they have a fascinating adaptation known as 'apnoea', or breath-holding, which plays a key role in their swimming ability. This reflex helps inflate their lungs, which have a large capacity, increasing buoyancy and making it easier to float and move through water. Their swimming stroke resembles a trotting action, with their legs moving alternately to push against the water, propelling them forward. This unique method of movement is efficient and enables them to swim with ease.

Historically, horses evolved with the ability to swim as part of their survival strategy. Wild horses would need to cross rivers, lakes, or other bodies of water to find food, migrate, or escape predators. Their strong lung capacity and swimming technique were key to navigating such environments. However, horses have poor visual perception of depth, which can make them hesitate before entering water, as they struggle to judge the depth or potential hazards below the surface.

Please reach out to the friendly veterinarians (Dr's Rhian, Jess and Imi) at Gold Coast Equine Clinic if you would like further information on how to include swimming into part of your horse's enrichment, exercise or rehabilitation program.

Love swimming with your horse or taking them to the beach? We'd love to see your pics in the comments section below! Feel free to include a comical story with it - the stories eliciting the most laughter shall be featured on our GCEC page!! πŸŒŠπŸ’§πŸŽπŸ΄

🦷🐎 Wolf teeth!! 🦷🐎

What are they? And should they be removed?

Wolf teeth are small, vestigial teeth that can be found in the maxillary jaw of horses. They are located in front of the first premolars, hence are labelled as 105 and 205 in the Triadan system. Wolf teeth are considered vestigial because they no longer have a functional role in mastication. 'Blind' wolf teeth are those that sit below the gumline.

In many cases, wolf teeth do not cause any issues, but they can interfere with the comfort of the bit when ridden and if your horse is having issues with a contact under saddle they should always be considered as a possible cause.

Here at GCEC we don't advocate routine removal of wolf teeth, although we are certainly happy to remove them should a client request it pre breaking the horse in.

Some clients are happy to leave the teeth in place and see how the horse goes with the breaking in process and remove them if there is any resistance to the bit/a contact being taken up. Some clients prefer to remove them prior to breaking the horse in so there is no possibility of them causing an issue. We are happy with either option as long as they are considered as the possible cause of any contact issues during the breaking in process and removed if such issues occur.

If you've recently purchased an adult horse that has wolf teeth, the chances are they don't bother the horse and again unless there are evident concerns in bitted work such as head tossing, avoidance of the contact etc. we leave them where they are.

Removal of wolf teeth is AN ACT OF VETERINARY SURGERY and should NEVER be performed by anyone other than a veterinary surgeon. It is a procedure that requires sedation and desensitisation of the area with local anaesthetic. With all of our routine dental checks we will let you know if there are wolf teeth present and have the discussion around what to do, pending the age and use of the horse. The procedure does not come without risk; hence, it is essential that a veterinary surgeon (not a lay dentist) performs the extraction.

As always you can contact us on 07 55742466 if you have any questions about wolf teeth or want to book one of our vets in to come and perform a dental check on your horse 🦷🐎

πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈβ“HOW DO HORSES SEE THE WORLD? β“πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ
Many people wonder if horses are colour blind, and while they are not completely colour blind, they do perceive colours differently than humans. Horses have dichromatic vision, meaning they only have two types of colour receptors (cones) in their eyes, compared to the three that humans have. This limits their ability to distinguish between certain colours, particularly in the red-to-yellow spectrum.

Horses see blues and greens clearly, but they struggle to differentiate between colours like red, orange, and certain shades of brown. This means that they likely perceive these colours as variations of grey or brown. The limited colour vision is an adaptation that suits their needs in the wild, where detecting movement and spotting predators is far more important than distinguishing between a rainbow of colours.

Interestingly, while their colour vision is limited, horses have excellent low-light vision and can see well in dim conditions, which is another survival trait. Their eyes are also positioned on the sides of their heads, giving them a wide field of view to detect danger.

😴 HORSE SLEEP - WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW 😴
Horses have the ability to sleep standing up, thanks to a unique system called the "passive stay apparatus." This system locks a horse's legs in place, allowing them to rest without collapsing.

πŸ’‘How does this work?
The reciprocal mechanism of the hind limbs enables the stifle joint and hock to work together. The lock of the patella secures the stifle in position. When the stifle joint locks it automatically locks the hock joint as well, ensuring both joints stay in position and the leg remains stable.

πŸ’‘Why have horses evolved this way?
This adaptation helps the horse conserve energy and stay alert for predators. While horses can doze standing, they still require some time lying down for deep, restorative REM sleep, which lasts about 2-3 hours per day. Overall, horses sleep 8-12 hours daily, with most of that being light sleep while standing. Understanding your horse's sleep habits can help ensure their overall health and well-being, as insufficient rest may lead to stress or health issues.

πŸ’‘When do you need to call the vet about your horses sleeping habits?
- When you notice they are not lying down - this can be due to pain such as arthritis
- When they seem to nod off in an unstable way (knuckling over onto their knees etc) - this can be a sign of narcolepsy or indicate that they are over tired due to not lying down and getting quality sleep.

As always if you have any concerns regarding your horse please just get in touch on 07 55742466

🐴🌟Product spotlight of the week: KER Preserve 🌟🐴

❓What is Preserve?
This scientifically formulated supplementary source of Vitamin E, organic selenium, magnesium and vitamin C is a potent antioxidant to reduce muscle damage and inflammation in performance horses.

Antioxidants minimise effects of mass-produced free radicals associated with exercise.

Does your horse experience muscle soreness or stiffness during exercise, or have an extended recovery period post-exercise? Or have signs of poor immunity? Or have decreased fertility? If so, then it is likely the horse has inadequate reserves of antioxidants.

❓It may be useful for:
- Aids in reducing muscle damage in working horses
- Prevents tying-up in horses prone to doing so
- Recovery from illness or injury, to promote healthy immunity
- Selenium supplement for horses ingesting selenium deficient pastures

Sounds like a good match for your horse? Available now - in clinic and at home visits with Gold Coast Equine Clinic. Price matched with all local produce stores. Contact us as always if you want more information on 07 55742466

πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ’‰ Did you know we offer Saturday morning routine appointments? πŸ’‰πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈ

We set aside a number of appointments on a Saturday morning for clients who perhaps work full time and can't have us attend to their horse for routine work such as dental exams, vaccinations or an Annual Health Package during the week.

As we only have one vet working on that day some flexibility is required as in an emergency the vet may need to be diverted to an urgent case. In that instance we will still do everything we can to get the appointment completed on the Saturday at some stage. Thankfully this isn't a regular occurrence!

Standard travel fees apply, with our normal area being covered from the Northern Rivers to the Northern Gold Coast.

Contact us on 07 5574 2466 to enquire and make your Saturday morning appointment.
