Willow is living her best nine lives 😼 after getting her health check and vaccination.

Feline parvovirus belongs to the same family as canine parvovirus - and is re-emerging due to low vaccination rates, as it can survive for up to a year in the environment. It has no cure, and is often deadly through complications with lethargy, lack of appetite, high fevers, dehydration due to vomiting and diarrhoea, and nasal discharge.

👩‍⚕️ The best and easiest way to protect your cat from Feline parvovirus is to ensure that they are up to date with their F3 vaccination. If you are unsure of their vaccination status, don't be afraid to reach out to us so we can help you get back on track.

When it comes to vaccinations, we will always offer you the best advice to help you protect your pets.

Farewell Dr Felicity 👋

Join us in wishing Dr Felicity the absolute best as she takes a break from the veterinary industry to take on some new adventures.

Although it’s only been for a short while, we’ve so appreciated having her as a part of our team and we know most of you were only getting to know her, but those of you who did would agree her caring, calm and gentle nature truly helped to create a safe and comfortable environment for your fur babies and for you! ❤🐾

Whilst she is taking a break from the veterinary industry for now, we’re so happy that we’ll still be seeing her around, particularly on her visits to our clinic with her fur-family.

Dr Felicity will have her last day in clinic on Monday 30 September, please be sure to drop in before then if you would like to see her and say your farewells.

Rest assured, even though Dr Felicity will be leaving us, Dr Tiana and Dr Vanessa, in conjunction with our amazing team of nurses all share the same dedication and commitment to providing gold standard service and medicine in a fear free clinic.

🤗 Dr Felicity, wishing you all the very best and we will miss you.

Snickers the kitty talks food 😼

Did you know most kitty cats and doggos can eat a 100% dry diet, provided that it’s complete and balanced food made with high-quality ingredients.

Dry foods are easy and convenient, and veterinary brands, such as Hills, are made with a high level of food safety testing, scientific research and long-term feeding trials, making them a reliable dietary option as nutrition is medicine!

Chat with our team for more personalised dietary recommendations for your fur babies, including healthy additions you can offer your pet for a lil’ extra culinary spice! 🐶🐱

The first four months in your pup’s life is the most critical time for their behavioural development.

Socialising with other doggos, learning boundaries, and experiencing the world in a safe and structured way helps them become well adjusted poochies that we love to know!

If you have a pup at this age, it’s important to think about the following:

- Puppies have brains like little sponges 🧽 the more they are introduced to in this time, the better adjusted they are when they are older.

- Puppy school 🎓 is a great way for dogs to develop confidence, and to learn how to interact with other pups in a safe, and healthy way.

- Puppyhood is the best time to introduce your dogs to different noises ⚡️and experiences - including how to behave when left alone.

Puppy school can also help arm you with tips and tricks to help keep your puppy stimulated and to feel safe during “alone time”

Choosing the right carrier

👎 Avoid backpack carriers and flimsy fabric carriers as these can be tricky to clean and give the sensation of collapse. Being visually exposed, having restricted space, limited ventilation as well as being in an unsteady or unstable environment will cause unnecessary distress for your feline friend.

👍Our recommendation is for a sturdy, plastic carrier that can be easily cleaned with a front and top opening.

A removable top half of the carrier with quick release clips will allow your cat to remain in the bottom half, feeling safe during any interactions or examination.

Your carrier should also have a secure door to prevent escape and slats on each side for ventilation ….. and treat delivery. 😺

In a purrrrfect world, your cat should enter their carrier voluntarily, perhaps with some encouragement in the form of treat or toy, or through being trained to do so. Just as Dr Felicity's little Walter is being trained to do here! We will provide some tips on how to do this soon!

No owner ever expects their beloved pooch to catch deadly heartworm but did you know this disease occurs throughout Australia (particularly prominent in Queensland) and is a problem year-round?

A single bite from a mosquito is all it takes to spread this potentially fatal disease.

You’ve all heard the saying: “prevention is better than cure”. When it comes to heartworm this couldn’t be more true. In fact, it’s because heartworm is so difficult and expensive to treat that we recommend continuous 12-month protection for all our doggos.

Sadly a great percentage of heartworm positive dogs who receive the treatment still don't make it 😭

Make sure you don’t put your pooch at risk!

If you are overdue in your doggo's heartworm treatment or have never treated, call us to book an appointment so we can chat through some options about continuous 12-month protection to ensure your baby is protected 🐶

Dray's Doggy Math

If my hoooomans have two hands each ... that makes four hands in total ... four hands that should be patting me when I'm at home.

When I'm visiting my vet, I need to add up all these hoooman hands too ... so that's another two for my vet ... another two for my nurse ... and another two from the receptionist ... two for the delivery driver who might come in while I'm there ... maybe another two for the hoooomans in the waiting room who can't resist my charms ... so that's ....

LOTS ... the answer is LOTS of hands should be available to pat me at all times.

Understanding Cat Stressors

Our feline friends are creatures of habit who thrive on routine. ‘Stressors’ are things that can cause your cat to be upset and fearful. 🙀 Stressors can ‘stack up’ even before you have arrived for your vet visit.

In order to reduce our kitty-cats fears, it helps to get a better understanding of what some of these stressors may include.

• Change in routine
• Lack of control
• Inability to escape
• Loud, sudden or frightening noises
• New and frightening social experience
• Unfamiliar or painful handing
• Unpleasant or strange sensations and smells

Now that we have a better understanding of stressors from a cat’s perspective we can focus on the tips and tricks to help keep your feline friends feeling less frisky and more cool, calm and collected. 😼 Continue to keep an eye out for more of these soon!

Another new face who you may have seen around the clinic for a few weeks!

👋 Meet Georgie, a vibrant addition to our team of exceptional Veterinary Nurses.

Originally from Canberra, she recently made the move to the sunny Gold Coast after a stint in Darwin, eager for new experiences. Georgie brings nearly 6 years of industry experience, having completed her Certificate II in Animal Studies and Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing at the Canberra Institute of Technology in 2019.

Specialising in consult nursing, Georgie is passionate about building trust and forging positive and caring relationships with her patients and their hooomans. 🩷 Her warm, outgoing personality shines through in her exceptional people skills, making her a favourite among clients and team members.

When Georgie isn’t in the clinic, she is likely to have her nose buried in a good book or can be found enjoying the outdoors embracing an active lifestyle, long walks along the beach and any opportunity to have a good catch up with friends.

Join us in welcoming Georgie to our Happy Paws family. 🤗 With her wealth of knowledge, dedication, and infectious enthusiasm, you and your pet’s experience with Georgie is sure to be nothing short of excellent!

We are in the final process of our application to 🤞 become a gold accredited Cat Friendly Clinic through the International Society of Feline Medicine program.

Because of their unique nature and needs, a trip to the vet can be very stressful, both for kitty-cats and for you too. We have a variety of tips and tricks to help make these visits as stress free as possible and we look forward to sharing our knowledge with you!

😼 Approaching things from a cat’s point of view can help us all in getting a better understanding of how we can provide a safe, non-threatening environment where cats can be examined calmly and effectively. Let’s take a trip to the vet for example,
• I’m put in a strange cat carrier.
• I take an unfamiliar car journey.
• There are strange smells, sights and noises on the journey and in the clinic.
• There are unfamiliar people and other pets, both of which may pose a threat.
• I’m being poked and prodded by unfamiliar hooomans in an unfamiliar environment.
• I may need further procedures or I may need to stay for the day (be hospitalised).

Luckily, each of our team members possess patience, gentleness, and empathy which are vital characteristics to aid in reducing stress and facilitating a smoother experience for your feline friend. Here’s a prime example of Dr Tiana conducting an examination on Tchaikatsvy (Tchai for short) in the location where she is feeling most comfortable rather than moving her to a different and albeit easier spot. 😽

Stay tuned for other tips and tricks!
