🐾 Dog Personality Types 🐾

Do you recognise your dog in one of the following personality types?

The Couch Potato:
Loves nothing more than lounging around all day. If there's a sunny spot on the floor or a comfy cushion, they've claimed it. Exercise? Nah, unless it's a slow stroll to the food bowl.

The Social Butterfly:
Everyone's their best friend! They greet every stranger like a long-lost buddy and can’t get enough of playdates. At the dog park, they're the life of the party.

The Nervous Nelly:
Jumps at every little noise and hides during thunderstorms. Always on high alert, ensuring the house is safe from the scary mailman and those suspicious leaves blowing by.

The Foodie:
Lives for meal times and treats. Will do just about anything for a snack, including perfecting the art of the puppy-dog eyes. Has a sixth sense for when you're eating and always appears right on cue.

The Adventurer:
Always ready for the next big adventure. Loves hiking, exploring new places, and getting into mischief. The backyard is their jungle, and every walk is a grand expedition.

The Boss:
Thinks they run the house. Demands attention and has a specific way they like things done. Probably the reason you're now on a schedule that revolves around their feeding and walking times.

The Snuggle Bug:
Can’t get enough cuddles and belly rubs. Will follow you from room to room just to be close. Bedtime? They’re already snuggled up under the covers, waiting for you.

The Escape Artist:
Master of sneaky getaways. Fences, doors, and leashes are mere suggestions to be creatively bypassed. You can bet they’ve got a plan for their next great escape.

Build a better bond with your doggo! Here are a few tips and reminders:

1. Discover Your Dog's Preferences

Not all dogs enjoy playing fetch or tug of war. Many dogs feel anxious on walks. Dogs have unique personalities and their own preferences, so watch your pooch to see what really gets him jazzed. Avoid forcing your dog to do anything he detests. For example, your pup may not like going on walks because he's scared of strangers, other dogs, or loud noises. So, in that case, be mindful to take your fur friend to quiet parks and tracks where you can avoid those things.

2. Learn Your Dog's Body Language

Canines communicate with their entire bodies. So to figure out how your pupper is feeling, you have to know what to look for. Does your dog's tail wag mean they're happy or nervous? Do they love cuddles or tolerate them? How can you tell? Learning what your dog's body language means will clue you in to their emotions. And that kind of understanding is bound to take your bond to the next level.

3. Teach Your Dog Something New

When you teach your dog a new trick such as good manners, simple tricks and agility sports, you dog understands that you'll give him a rewards. Positive reinforcement trainig is an excellent way to build trust and grow your bond.

4. Communicate Consistently

The biggest barrier to building a rock solid bond, is inconsistency. For instance, sometimes you may be fine with your dog barking at a stranger outside. But when it's a friend your dog is barking at, you may try to stop it ASAP. This sends mixed messages to your furry pal, who sees both individuals as strangers. The most important step you can take to build a stronger bond with your dog is to be consistent in how you respond in various situations.

5. Do More Of What Your Dog Loves!

Once you've figured out what activities make your dog happiest, do more of them. Maybe your dog likes lying around the pool, and you not so much, but being out there with your pup helps you bond so it's worth your time!.

STAY CALM!

Sometimes having a dog is like having a tiny, furry security alarm that’s perpetually on high alert. A leaf blows by? Bark. Someone sneezes three houses down? Bark. An ant crosses the sidewalk? You guessed it—bark!

Our nervous pups take their self-appointed security roles very seriously. They act like they're guarding the crown jewels from an army of invisible intruders. Every creak, every rustle, every distant sound is a potential threat in their eyes. They're utterly consistent in their quest to keep us safe from the terrifying sounds of daily life.

To all the Nervous Nelly dogs out there: we salute your dedication, even if it means we’re on constant bark alert.

The thing about cats is that they're so fun to chase! But with a little patience and the right approach, dogs can be trained to calm their behaviour around cats which can help to curb their natural instinct to chase.

Some breeds, like Golden Retrievers and Beagles, are known for their friendly and gentle nature, making them great companions for cats. And early socialization is key—introducing a dog to cats when they're still puppies can set the stage for a harmonious relationship.

Giving your cat plenty of high places to retreat to can make them feel safer and less likely to run and enhance positive feelings towards their doggy siblings.

In the end, it's all about understanding and respecting each animal's boundaries. With time and effort, you might find that your dog and cat can become the best of friends...or at least tolerate each other’s company. 🐶❤️😺

It's Fun Fact Friday! 🎉🐾

Did you know that dogs are more prone to overheating than humans because they release heat slower than us?

Despite it now being much cooler, we're always reminded of the importance of taking extra care of our furry friends, especially under the sunny skies of Queensland. While their paw pads have some sweat glands, it's not enough to cool them down, so they primarily rely on panting to regulate their body temperature.

🐶✨ Quick Reminder: Check Your Dog's Teeth! 🦷❤️

To help your dogs teeth stay healthy, make sure you brush them daily, give dental treats and regular visits to the vet. Healthy teeth make for a happy dog.

Early detection of gum disease is key to keeping your furry friend's smile healthy and bright. Here are some signs to watch for:

🐶Bleeding or inflamed gums
🐶Discolored teeth
🐶Bad breath
🐶Trouble eating or chewing
🐶Build-up of plaque and tartar

Regular dental care can prevent these issues. Brush your dog's teeth daily, provide dental treats, and schedule regular vet visits. Remember, healthy teeth make for a happy pup! 🐾💕

Hey Happy Hounders !

As some of you already know, I’m currently overseas visiting family (it’s been a while!).

I’m still contactable and will no doubt speak to some of you soon, but for the most part, we have our wizzes in the office, Clea and Karyn, holding down the fort.

Please be patient with us in case our replies are a tad slower, but we’ll still endeavour to get back to you all within 24 hours should you message.

In the meantime, give the fur babies a hug for me. I miss them all so much already!

Featuring gorgeous Zena, otherwise known as Queen Z!

Z was a bit of a nervous wreck when we first started out on walks. The slightest change in the wind, someone walking by or a leaf blowing past would have her rushing for home or planting her butt on the ground.

With lots of patience and daily walks to build up her confidence, she now often beats me to the doggy door and wants to keep on going after we finish our walk!

Another little HH superstar 💚✨🌟

Reasons why your cat might react to the ‘Pspspsps’ sound

Even though there’s no scientific evidence to explain this phenomenon, there are a few popular theories about why your cat might react to the ‘pspspsps’-sound more than to any other sounds you make to get their attention.

1. Cats are sensitive to high frequencies

While they might not always seem to listen, your cat actually has an incredible sense of hearing. Cats can hear sound frequencies three times higher than humans can, and the ‘s’-sound just happens to operate at a higher frequency than most other human sounds, which supposedly makes it stick out. When this high-pitched sound then gets interrupted by a ‘p’-sound, it is thought to create a rhythm that’s attention-grabbing to your feline friend

2. The sound imitates other sounds in nature

The ‘pspspsps’-sound resembles other sounds in nature that cats would be interested in during their hunting game. Imitating impressive insects, rustling leaves, birds ruffling their feathers, or mice trying to vanish in the tall grass … the ‘pspspsps’-sound may trigger the predatory instinct in the brain of a cat.

3. The sound resembles a mother’s call

While the ‘pspspsps’-sound might indeed remind your cat of prey, there’s a different theory in which the sound actually signals to your feline that there may be a predator nearby. When cats are angry or afraid, they will hiss at whatever frightens them. So, when kittens grow up, they learn that when mum makes that aggressive sound, they better stay close to her for shelter

You can't teach an old dog new tricks. It's such a widely held belief, that it's even become a proverb! However the truth is quite the reverse. Just like younger dogs, older dogs benefit greatly from mental stimulation. Learning new commands, tricks, or behaviours can keep their minds sharp and reduce the risk of cognitive decline.

Older dogs might require different training techniques. They may not have the same energy levels as puppies, so shorter, more frequent training sessions can be more effective. Using positive reinforcement, such as treats and praise, can motivate them to learn.

When training an older dog, it's important to consider their physical health. They might have limitations due to arthritis or other age-related conditions. Ensure that the new tricks or behaviors are within their physical capabilities to avoid injury.

An older dog may come with a wealth of experience and previously learned behaviors. This can be an advantage, as they often understand basic commands and the concept of training. However, unlearning bad habits might take some extra time and patience.

Practical Tips for Training Older Dogs:

- Start Slow: Begin with simple commands and gradually increase the difficulty as your dog becomes more comfortable.
- Be Patient: Understand that older dogs may take longer to learn new behaviors. Consistency and patience are key.
- Use Positive Reinforcement: Reward-based training is effective for dogs of all ages. Use treats, toys, and praise to encourage good behavior.
- Create a Comfortable Environment: Ensure that your dog feels safe and relaxed during training sessions. Avoid stressful or distracting environments.
- Monitor Health: Keep an eye on your dog’s physical condition during training. If they show signs of discomfort or fatigue, take a break.

Here are 6 warning signs to get your pet's ears checked with your vet:

Is your dog a little Houdini escape artist? Or do you know a dog who makes a jail-break at every opportunity? Here are a few tips you can share to help prevent dog's from jumping the fence and making a run for it.

1. Boredom is the number one reason a dog will try to escape the back yard.

If a dog is bored at home and you are at work during the day, consider having someone (like Happy Hounds!) drop around during the day to walk or play with your dog and you will see a dramatic reduction in the number of escape attempts.

You can also provide some enrichment activities for your dog that will help to keep them mentally stimulated. Puzzle Toys, Snuffle Mats and Frozen Treats can help to keep your dog occupied when you are not there.

Make your backyard a haven for your dog. Plant trees and bushes for shade and something to run around. Create an obstacle course. Make sure your dog has adequate food and water.

2. Prevention.

If your dog can easily get out of the backyard, then they probably will. Remove anything that makes it easier for them to get on top of to jump over the fence.

Increase the height of your fence if necessary, or make an alteration such as adding lattice to the fence to extend the existing height.

Another alternative could be to add a fence topper – top your fence with PVC piping or rubber tubing to prevent your dog from gripping it

Check your fence perimeter for any gaps or potential dig spots and reinforce them as necessary.

Maybe your dog would benefit from being able to see out! Add a peek-a-boo window at dog head height so your dog can check out what's happening outside the fence and be less likely to escape to find out. On the flip side, if your dog is prey driven and likely to want to chase cats, birds or cars they can see through the fence, block their view using slats to restrict their view.

3. Be prepared

If your dog still occasionally escape despite your best attempts, be sure to be proactive by having your contact details listed on your dog's collar, ensure that your dog is microchipped and your details up to date, and consider installing a GPS tracker onto your dog's collar.
