Chicken and rice is still being recommended as a bland diet for dogs with upset stomachs or gastrointestinal (GI) issues but it may do more harm than good.

🍚A ‘chicken and rice’ is not as gentle on the system as it seems. Both chicken and rice can be inflammatory, especially for dogs with sensitivities or compromised gut health.

🦠 The gut microbiome is a living population of microorganisms that help digestion, nutrient synthesis, and absorption. Both beneficial and harmful bacteria reside in the gut microbiome. A healthy microbiome can keep both balanced. However, when your dog is experiencing gastrointestinal problems, there is an overabundance of harmful bacteria. Rice exacerbates this problem as it is a great food source for harmful bacteria.

🍃Slippery elm and marshmallow root are both excellent herbs for gut rebalancing. Both are rich in mucilage, which coats, soothes, and protects the mucous membranes lining the digestive tract. This makes them highly effective for managing acute diarrhea by calming irritation, reducing inflammation, and helping to firm up stools.

We support Pets in the Park here with asking City of Moreton Bay to reverse this decision.

Pets In The Park strongly condemns the recent policy decision made earlier this week by the City of Moreton Bay to ban homeless individuals from owning a pet.

Australia is not a country that kicks the little people; rather, we are a society that lends a hand to help people when they are downtrodden. This does not appear to be the case in the City of Moreton Bay, however, where Council is now targeting some of the most marginalised members of its own community.

People suffering the devastating effects of homelessness live a very difficult, exclusionary existence. In many cases, their pets are their entire world. It's a reason for them to get up in the morning. A reason to feel loved. Companionship during lonely days. Security on dark unsafe nights.

Homelessness can and does happen to ordinary people in Australia with frightening ease. Whether it’s sudden job loss, relationship breakdown, family violence, faulty financial products, medical episodes, natural disasters – there are myriad ways in which a person can suddenly and very unexpectedly find themselves without stable housing. This decision carries dangerous implications for all Moreton Bay residents. If any resident were to face the unimaginable – losing their home – they too would fall victim to a Council policy that is designed to persecute, rather than assist.

Government policies have real-world consequences, and the decision by the City of Moreton Bay to outlaw pet ownership for people experiencing homelessness will simply deepen their hardship. At Pets In The Park’s free veterinary clinics, including our Caboolture clinic within the City of Moreton Bay area, we witness firsthand the lifesaving bond between vulnerable individuals and their pets – companions who provide emotional support, unconditional love, and a sense of hope and purpose during a person’s hardest times.

Our dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to offer compassionate care to both people and their animals, ensuring their wellbeing. A more caring approach from the council, recognising and valuing this important bond, would not only support those in need, but also honour the hard work of volunteer-led charity organisations like ours that are committed to serving the Moreton Bay community.

We urge the residents of Moreton Bay, and the broader Australian community, to voice their compassion and concern for these vulnerable people and pets. Demand a reversal of this cruel, short-sighted policy decision. Demand real solutions that address the complex problem of homelessness with dignity and genuine care.

🐶🦷Had my last dental check up after my teeth extractions earlier this month. Also lost a bit of weight 🥳
Got the all clear and will be back for a check up next year.
Reminder to have your pets teeth checked over at the vets as it’s not just about tartar and plaque, there could be something else going on that you’re not aware of, as was the case with Mindy having furcation/gum receding, the molars at the very back of her mouth I didn’t even know existed and almost impossible to check properly at home and the bone loss that can only be detected by an X-ray.

❤️ Mindy was given the best of care and treated very gently by the team at Pet Wellness Centre.

🦷 On Monday, Mindy went to for a dental examination under a general anaesthetic, X-rays, cleaning and possible tooth extraction due to a furcation.

In the end Mindy needed 4 tooth extractions. The vet also found that most of her teeth have significant enamel wear, likely causing her sensitivity.
When I adopted Mindy she already had signs of dental enamel erosion but I didn’t realise it was this severe.
Once her mouth has healed up from the extractions I will still give her bones and chews. Duck wings, turkey necks, meaty soft lamb bones and kangaroo chews which she loves. But will avoid any larger, harder bones such as the lamb neck bones which she absolutely loved 😆 All the more for Gus ❤️

Now that her teeth and gums have been cleaned I’ll start using a small tooth brush to clean her teeth and gums. We already use Simply Seaweed for dental health and will continue to use this.
Diet plays a huge part in keeping your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. Avoid high carbs, starch and sugary food.
Once the bad bacteria takes over in their mouth things will only get worse.

Note: If your pet already has dental issues, it’s a good idea to check with your vet before brushing their teeth. Brushing without a professional clean first can spread bacteria and make the problem worse.

It is important to keep an eye on your pets mouth and teeth to see if there is anything starting to look different, smelly breath, more tartar building up, red gums etc and have a consult with your vet if you see any changes.

❤️ Thanks to Dr Celeste and the team for taking such great care of Mindy and helping her feel more comfortable moving forward.

🌱 Here’s a you tube video from Canine Vitality discussing auto immune problems and detoxing from pesticides.

Given Gus’s history of autoimmune issues, including MMM (Masticatory Muscle Myositis) and pancreatitis flare-ups, I’m quite worried about the widespread application of red fire ant bait throughout our entire suburbs. While I support efforts to address red fire ant nests, I’m concerned about the indiscriminate treatment of areas where these ants may not be present.

The ant bait is made using tiny pieces of corn granules soaked in soy bean oil with the active bait ingredient. This is sprayed via aerial baiting for larger properties and on foot with a hand held bait spreader for smaller areas.
It is toxic.

❤️ Sharing some info about how to support your pets to detox from any toxins. Unfortunately with the red fire ant baiting on the Gold Coast and surrounding areas, we are all going to be exposed to these pesticides.

The food your dog eats, the air he breathes, and the water he drinks all contain toxins. It's become increasingly important to learn how to detox your dog.

Our Story

Wholefood Pet Market located at 5/19 Township Drive West Burleigh QLD 4219

In 2015 I adopted an 18 month old Cattle Dog X named Gus.

Knowing I didn't want to feed Gus highly processed pet food because my previous dogs and cats were fed highly processed ‘pet food’ and given annual vaccinations and preventative medications, they didn't have a good quality of life into their older years.

I started researching and asking questions about pet food and discovered raw food for pets.
